Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A twisting, haunting true-life murder mystery about one of the most monstrous crimes in American history, from the author of The Wager and The Lost City of Z, “one of the preeminent adventure and true-crime writers working today."—New York Magazine • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • NOW A MARTIN SCORSESE PICTURE “A shocking whodunit…What more could fans of true-crime thrillers ask?”—USA Today “A masterful work of literary journalism crafted with the urgency of a mystery.” —The Boston Globe In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. One of her relatives was shot. Another was poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more Osage were dying under mysterious circumstances, and many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered. As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case, and the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to try to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including a Native American agent who infiltrated the region, and together with the Osage began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Osage tribe, recognized as the "Children of the Middle Waters," holds a prestigious position as one of the most ancient Native American nations in the Midwest. They initially resided in the Ohio Valley, but later moved westward and established their settlement near the Osage River in what is now Missouri. Known for their prowess in hunting and ability to form strategic partnerships, the Osage quickly became a powerful presence in the region. They were highly adept at agriculture, cultivating a variety of crops including corn, beans, and squash. The Osage also had a system of governance that involved a council of chiefs and a tribal police force referred to as the "Little Old Men." In the early 20th century, the Osage people faced a deeply unfortunate chapter in their history with the discovery of oil on their reservation and ultimately, a series of sinister crimes that would come to be known as the "Osage Reign of Terror." Members of the Osage Nation began to die under mysterious circumstances, and it soon became clear that these deaths were not accidents but cold-blooded murders orchestrated to gain control of the Osage wealth. Following the discovery of oil on their tribal land many years ago, a large number of opportunistic individuals arrived in Osage territory with the intention of exploiting their resources and profiting from their significant oil wealth. The most calculating individuals would establish close relationships with their victims, gaining their trust through marriage or guardianship, only to exploit them financially and, in some cases, even participate in their untimely demise. The murders were the initial significant criminal investigation carried out by the U.S. government agency that later developed into the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In the face of this terror, the Osage people showed remarkable resilience, they fought tirelessly for justice, even as the forces arrayed against them seemed insurmountable, resulting in their current status as a federally recognized tribe with a flourishing community. They continue to commemorate their culture through yearly events like the Osage Nation In-Lon-Schka dances, guaranteeing the transmission of their profound history and customs to forthcoming generations.

When rivers of oil are discovered beneath the land belonging to the Osage tribe during the Oklahoma oil boom, Grace Blanket becomes the wealthiest person in the territory. Tragically, she is murdered at the hands of greedy men, leaving her daughter Nola orphaned. After the Graycloud family takes Nola in, they too begin dying mysteriously. Though they send letters to Washington DC begging for help, the family continues to slowly disappear until Native American government official Stace Red Hawk ventures west to investigate the terrors plaguing the Osage tribe.
