Book excerpt: Ethnic tourism has emerged as a means that is employed by many countries to facilitate economic and cultural development and to assist in the preservation of ethnic heritage. However, while ethnic tourism has the potential to bring economic and social benefits it can also significantly impact traditional cultures, ways of life and the sense of identity of ethnic groups. There is growing concern in many places about how to balance the use of ethnicity as a tourist attraction with the protection of minority cultures and the promotion of ethnic pride. Despite the fact that a substantial literature is devoted to the impacts of ethnic tourism, little research has been done on how to plan ethnic tourism attractions or to manage community impacts of tourism. This book addresses the need for more research on planning for ethnic tourism by exploring the status and enhancement of planning strategies for ethnic tourism development. The book develops the case of a well-known ethnic tourist destination in China -Xishuangbanna, Yunnan. It analyzes how ethnic tourism has been planned and developed at the study site and examines associated socio-cultural and planning issues. The authors evaluate the perspectives of four key stakeholder groups (the government, tourism entrepreneurs, ethnic minorities and tourists) on ethnic tourism through on-site observation, interviews with government officials, planners and tourism entrepreneurs, surveys of tourists and ethnic minority people, and evaluation of government policies, plans and statistics. This book is unique in its emphasis on planning and in its focus on China, rapidly emerging as a major player in tourism, with applications for tourism around the world.

Book excerpt: The Twenty-Four Histories (Chinese: 二十四史) are the Chinese official historical books covering a period from 3000 BC to the Ming dynasty in the 17th century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asia Pacific region’s enormous diversity of living cultures and preserved heritage sites has significant appeal to many tourists. However tourism has grown so rapidly that many issues associated with the incorporation of cultural and heritage experiences in tourist itineraries (such as authenticity verses commodification, exploitation of national cultures, impacts on local communities, and the management of heritage resources) have not been adequately addressed and must be debated. This revealing book reviews recent developments in cultural and heritage tourism in the Asia Pacific region and provides a discussion on how communities have faced and overcome significant challenges to develop and market their culture and heritage resources. A range of models and case studies are used to deepen the reader’s understanding of heritage and cultural issues, to illustrate many of the more controversial issues, and to examine new evaluative, and planning tools. This book is a special issue of the Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research.

Book excerpt: Being a special kind of landscape, the theme park has become one of major subjects in interdisciplinary studies and received increasing scholarly attention in the past few decades. Perspectives have varied from American approaches which treat the theme park as the production base of the American Dream to various interpretation of the tourist space in semiotic, structural and post-modernistic approaches. Other studies of the theme park have been conducted in a practical way with a focus in economic development and urban designing for the local and peripheral surroundings. The body of research is enormous and has proved to be very beneficial in understanding the theme park as a multiple space in the ever-changing context. Overseas Chinese Town theme park (OCT) is one of the most popular tourist sights in China, a cultural space which epitomizes the country’s cultural business and Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, an emerging metropolis. As the ultimate icon of Chinese and global cultural representation, the theme park has attracted visitors the world over. This book presents for the first time an analysis of narratives which surround the park. The research of OCT is to shed a cultural, political and ideological light on the “modern pleasure space” constructed and consumed in contemporary China. In view of the overwhelming quantity of theme park study in the USA and Europe, a shift of orientation in the study of theme parks in China becomes significant as the emerging theme parks in the country are described as “springing up like bamboo shoots after a rain”. As an important study of an important contemporary phenomenon, it illustrates in considerable detail the distinctive nature of Chinese theme park development and will be of interest to a range of readers in fields such as cultural studies, tourism, sociology and human geography. “Non-Western theme parks have attracted very little attention from social scientists, even though they can be considered important sites for the examination of the influence and limits of globalization. With this important study of the OCT theme park, Zhang provides us with a detailed examination of the extent to which the Western model of the theme park is replicated in the Chinese context. In this way, he provides crucial insights that will be of great interest to students of globalization.” —Professor Alan Bryman, University of Leicester “The work provides a very readable, critical review of the recent development of theme parks in China, in particular the Overseas Chinese Town Theme Park at Shenzen. The work is well-grounded in a critical understanding of the role of theme parks as cultural “texts”… As an important study of an important contemporary phenomenon, it illustrates in considerable detail the distinctive nature of OCT park and will be of interest to a range of readers in fields such as cultural studies, tourism, sociology and human geography.” —Professor Stephen Williams, Staffordshire University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this beautiful and perceptive book, Dana Buntrock examines, for the first time, how tradition is incorporated into contemporary Japanese architecture. Looking at the work of five architects – Fumihiko Maki, Terunobu Fujimori, Ryoji Suzuki, Kengo Kuma, and Jun Aoki – Buntrock reveals the aims influencing many wonderful works barely known in the West; the sensual side of Japanese architecture borne out of approaches often less concerned with professionalism than with people and place. The buildings described in this book illustrate an architecture that embraces uniqueness, expressing unusual stories in the rough outlines of rammed earth and rust, and demonstrating new paths opening up for architectural practice today. For some, these examples will offer new insight into expressions of tradition in Japanese architecture; for others, this book offers inspiration for their own efforts to assert the unique heritage of other regions around the world. Compelling, insightful and groundbreaking, this book is essential for everyone studying Japanese architecture and anyone trying to invoke narrative and tradition in contemporary design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's Old Dwellings is the most comprehensive critical examination of China's folk architectural forms in any language. It and its companion volume, China's Living Houses: Folk Beliefs, Symbols, and Household Ornamentation (UH Press, 1999), together form a landmark study of the environmental, historical, and social factors that influence housing forms for nearly a quarter of the world's population. Both books draw on the author's thirty years of fieldwork and extensive travel in China as well as published and unpublished material in many languages. China's Old Dwellings begins by tracing the interest in Chinese vernacular buildings in the twentieth century. Early chapters detail common and distinctive spatial components, including the interior and exterior modular spaces that are axiomatic components of most Chinese dwellings as well as conventional structural components and building materials common in Chinese construction. Later chapters examine representative housing types in the three broad cultural realms--northern, southern, and western--into which China has been divided. Knapp completes his survey with an exploration of China's old dwellings in the context of the rapid economic and social changes that are destroying so many of them.

From the light and lightness of the world’s busiest cities to the chatters of small towns, the reader is taking to uncharted territories with endless encounters, each reflecting the rich landscape of the world and sophisticated mindscape of the author. "This is Simone Gao ́s ambition as a self-confessed somnambulist: "getting away not to experience the periphery of society but to enter reality more deeply." In a strange way, I agree with her. Sleepwalking is a modern form of actively finding meaning and freedom in our world; sometimes it is also the only way of staying awake. " --Mai Mang (Yibing Huang), Chinese poet "Simone Gaos artwork is very unique and poetic. Somehow, each work reflects her personal experience, with espresso as a metaphor for herself in the world. But when we see the paintings, we not only smell the espresso, but also see beyond to her mood. Her art does not just simply describe the story but is filled with emotional sensibilities." --JianJun Zhang, professor at NYU and artist
