Book excerpt: The origin of spurious solutions in computational electromagnetics, which violate the divergence equations, is deeply rooted in a misconception about the first-order Maxwell's equations and in an incorrect derivation and use of the curl-curl equations. The divergence equations must be always included in the first-order Maxwell's equations to maintain the ellipticity of the system in the space domain and to guarantee the uniqueness of the solution and/or the accuracy of the numerical solutions. The div-curl method and the least-squares method provide rigorous derivation of the equivalent second-order Maxwell's equations and their boundary conditions. The node-based least-squares finite element method (LSFEM) is recommended for solving the first-order full Maxwell equations directly. Examples of the numerical solutions by LSFEM for time-harmonic problems are given to demonstrate that the LSFEM is free of spurious solutions. Jiang, Bo-Nan and Wu, Jie and Povinelli, L. A. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the first ICASE/LaRC Work shop on Computational Electromagnetics and Its Applications conducted by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering and NASA Langley Research Center. We had several goals in mind when we decided, jointly with the Elec tromagnetics Research Branch, to organize this workshop on Computa tional Electromagnetics ( CEM). Among our goals were a desire to obtain an overview of the current state of CEM, covering both algorithms and ap plications and their effect on NASA's activities in this area. In addition, we wanted to provide an attractive setting for computational scientists with expertise in other fields, especially computational fluid dynamics (CFD), to observe the algorithms and tools of CEM at work. Our expectation was that scientists from both fields would discover mutually beneficial inter connections and relationships. Another goal was to learn of progress in solution algorithms for electromagnetic optimization and design problems; such problems make extensive use of field solvers and computational effi ciency is at a premium. To achieve these goals we assembled the renowned group of speakers from academia and industry whose talks are contained in this volume. The papers are printed in the same order in which the talks were pre sented at the meeting. The first paper is an overview of work currently being performed in the Electromagnetic Research Branch at the Langley Research Center.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyperbolic partial differential equations describe phenomena of material or wave transport in physics, biology and engineering, especially in the field of fluid mechanics. The mathematical theory of hyperbolic equations has recently made considerable progress. Accurate and efficient numerical schemes for computation have been and are being further developed. This two-volume set of conference proceedings contains about 100 refereed and carefully selected papers. The books are intended for researchers and graduate students in mathematics, science and engineering interested in the most recent results in theory and practice of hyperbolic problems. Applications touched in these proceedings concern one-phase and multiphase fluid flow, phase transitions, shallow water dynamics, elasticity, extended thermodynamics, electromagnetism, classical and relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, cosmology. Contributions to the abstract theory of hyperbolic systems deal with viscous and relaxation approximations, front tracking and wellposedness, stability of shock profiles and multi-shock patterns, traveling fronts for transport equations. Numerically oriented articles study finite difference, finite volume, and finite element schemes, adaptive, multiresolution, and artificial dissipation methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meshfree methods, particle methods, and generalized finite element methods have witnessed substantial development since the mid 1990s. The growing interest in these methods is due in part to the fact that they are extremely flexible numerical tools and can be interpreted in a number of ways. For instance, meshfree methods can be viewed as a natural extension of classical finite element and finite difference methods to scattered node configurations with no fixed connectivity. Furthermore, meshfree methods offer a number of advantageous features which are especially attractive when dealing with multiscale phenomena: a priori knowledge about particular local behavior of the solution can easily be introduced in the meshfree approximation space, and coarse-scale approximations can be seamlessly refined with fine-scale information. This volume collects selected papers presented at the Seventh International Workshop on Meshfree Methods, held in Bonn, Germany in September 2013. They address various aspects of this highly dynamic research field and cover topics from applied mathematics, physics and engineering.

Book excerpt: This proceedings volume gathers selected contributions presented at two instances of the "JSPS/SAC Seminar: On Gas Kinetic/Dynamics and Life Science", held by the Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg, Sweden, on March 25-26, 2021 (virtual) and March 17-18, 2022 (virtual). Works in this book provide a concise approach to the theoretical and numerical analysis of kinetic type equations that arise, for example, in modeling industrial, medical, and environmental problems. Readers will find some of the most recent theoretical results, newly developed numerical methods in the field, and some open problems. Possible application areas encompass fission/fusion energy, electromagnetics, nuclear science and engineering, medical service, radiation oncology, and plants growth conditions, to name a few. The JSPS/SAC seminars are jointly organized by JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science)—Stockholm Office and the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology & University of Gothenburg, Sweden. These seminars foster discussions on the mathematical theory, industrial and life science applications, and numerical analysis of non-linear hyperbolic partial differential equations modeling collision-less plasma and charged particles. This is achieved by making optimal use of computer resources and by drawing upon a variety of disciplines, techniques and theories. With the emergence of advanced computational and information technologies, computational science now has a significant impact on engineering, physical, biological, management and social sciences. The contributions in this state-of-the-art volume range from theoretical and numerical topics to practical implementations. The subject matter includes modelling, mathematical and numerical analysis, differential equations, linear algebra, optimization, domain decomposition, computational fluid dynamics, computational mechanics, elasticity, structure, computational physics and chemistry, electromagnetic, control theory and other applications. This volume is dedicated to Roland Glowinski on the occasion of his 60th birthday. It is aimed at the next generation of scientists, applied mathematicians, computer scientists, practitioners and engineers who will define computational science within the context of the challenging scientific, industrial, economic and societal problems of the 21st century.

Book excerpt: Providing an ideal transition from introductory to advanced concepts, Electromagnetics, Second Edition builds a foundation that allows electrical engineers to confidently proceed with the development of advanced EM studies, research, and applications. This second edition of a popular text continues to offer coverage that spans the entire field, from electrostatics to the integral solutions of Maxwell’s equations. The book provides a firm grounding in the fundamental concepts of electromagnetics and bolsters understanding through the use of classic examples in shielding, transmission lines, waveguides, propagation through various media, radiation, antennas, and scattering. Mathematical appendices present helpful background information in the areas of Fourier transforms, dyadics, and boundary value problems. The second edition adds a new and extensive chapter on integral equation methods with applications to guided waves, antennas, and scattering. Utilizing the engaging style that made the first edition so appealing, this second edition continues to emphasize the most enduring and research-critical electromagnetic principles.
