Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Ideals of the Modern School ON October 12, 1909, Francisco Ferrer y Guardia was shot in the trenches of the Montjuich Fortress at Barcelona. A Military Council had found him guilty of being head of the insurrection which had, a few months before, lit the flame of civil war in the city and province. The clergy had openly petitioned the Spanish Premier, when F errer was arrested, to look to the Modern School and its founder for the source of the revolutionary feeling; and the Premier had, instead of rebuking them, promised to do so. When F errer was arrested the prosecution spent many weeks in collecting evidence against him, and granted a free pardon to several men who were implicated in the riot, for testifying against him. These three or four men were the only witnesses out of fifty who would have been heard patiently in a civil court of justice, and even their testimony would at once have. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Point of View of Modern Education This little book is the substance of lectures before Mothers' clubs delivered from month to month through a series of years. It is an effort to make application of some of the recent discoveries in science to the training of children. The now generally accepted theory of the growth of the human race through the ages, and of each individual born into the world in modern times, is that known as evolution. The old education was founded upon a radically different view of the world and of man. Educational practice, especially in later generations, has not been consistent with its theory, in many important respects, and progressive teachers have felt handicapped by a doctrine which was opposed to their methods. Every institution of the social world is now adjusting itself to the theory of evolution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Public School, Being a History of Free Education, in the City of New York The celebration of the centenary of the inauguration (on February 19, 1805) of the movement for free public schools in this city was suggested to the Board of Education in the spring of 1904, and, later, the preparation of a history of public education in New York. The Board unanimously approved both suggestions, and granted me a leave of absence for the purpose of writing this book. Although the time has been, of necessity, limited, no reasonable pains have been spared to secure accuracy. From the literary point of view this work makes no claim upon the reader. It is put forth as a fairly complete chronicle - a chronicle rather than a philosophic his tory of educational events in the city during the past one hundred years. To fill out the record, a preliminary chapter, relating to schools on Manhattan Island prior to 1805, precedes the his tory of the century now closing; and accounts of early schools in other parts of the city are also given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Education in Modern Times More striking characteristics of the book will probably be found in the emphasis laid upon educational institu tions and practices, rather than upon theoretical develop ment; and in the larger place given to American educa tion. The account of each educational movement has included at least an attempt to trace its influence upon the content, method, and organization of education in this country, while three chapters have been devoted exclusively to the rise of our educational system. For this somewhat special point of View, I trust that no apology is needed, as the book is intended primarily for use in the United States, and will be of service to our teachers largely as it succeeds in focusing the educational progress of this country. It will be quite possible, however, for those readers in England and other coun tries, who have been so hospitable in their reception of my former works, to neglect or curtail these parts of the book, and still have a body of material sufficient to represent satisfactorily the history of education during the past two centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Modern Education: 1600 1700 The book, however, aims at a wider survey than a purely English one; and in the foreign section the writer has tried to indicate the great services (too seldom even named in text books of educational history) which were rendered to the world by St jean-baptiste de la Salle. As a foil to the ideals of education or of instruction presented by the innovators, the actual practice of the seventeenth-century school - room, reformed and unreformed, is described on the authority Of those who knew it at first hand. It is hoped that a full index, biblio graphy and tables of contents and of dates will increase the usefulness of the book to students of the history of Education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Modern Education: An Account of the Course of Educational Opinion and Practice From the Revival of Learning to the Present Decade The chief difficulty in its preparation has arisen from the abundance and complexity of the materials that have been presented. An attempt has been made, by a careful selection of truly representative facts and personages, by a rigid exclusion of all other matters however intrinsically interesting, and by treating the several centuries from the standpoint of what in them seemed most characteristic, to con struct a narrative which should be truthful and perspicuous without being unduly bulky. The reader will judge how far this attempt has been successful. The works to which the author has been specially indebted have been so frequently mentioned in the following pages that it seems needless to enumerate them here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Education This little volume of studies has been prepared as a guide to the study of the History of Education for students in col leges and normal schools, with the hope that from out of the maze of facts and events which surround and obscure the sub ject, they may by its aid gain a clearer understanding of the development of educational thought and practices. Most books that deal with this broadest of historical subjects do not marshal the facts contributing to progress in education so that a definite tendency or purpose or result can be discerned. As a matter of value and profit, it is not so important to the student to know the facts as it is to know the bearing of the facts upon the movement, to understand their dependence upon what has gone before as well as upon the actual conditions surrounding them and to see their influence upon the develop ment of the movement. We all know that any type of edu cational practice is but the outward expression of the thoughts and ideals and purposes which guide one generation in the rearing of the next, while these thoughts, ideals, and purposes are, in their turn, born of the national life and civilization in which they have matured. Now, it is always a di cult thing for the student to pick out the essential and contributing facts and to discover their meaning, and usually, working by himself, he either fails to get very much true significance from them or else he gets it at very great expense of thought and efi'ort. My experience in teaching the History of Education has. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
