Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed survey and catalogue of the life and works of the English organ builder Samuel Green (1740-1796). A short biographical survey traces Green's career to the period when he established himself as the foremost English builder of organs of the late 18th century. This is followed by a detailed account of the design and constructional method of his chamber instruments and church organs. A chronological survey of his entire output gives the specification and history of each instrument and a reassessment of earlier sources. The text is illustrated with photographs and line drawings showing the characteristic features of Green's organ construction.

Book Synopsis Hereford Cathedral by : Gerarld Alymer
Download or read book Hereford Cathedral written by Gerarld Alymer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-07-07 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique in its possession of a chained library and of the Mappa Mundi, Hereford Cathedral is remarkable for its architecture, its long history and its musical tradition. "Hereford Cathedral" is the definitive account of its history from Anglo-Saxon times to the present, and of its architecture, fittings, musical tradition, archives and library. Substantial parts of the structure date from Norman times, but the building has been modified in many ways over the years. In the middle ages Hereford was the centre of pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Thomas Cantilupe, bishop of Hereford (d.1282). It survived the Reformation relatively intact, but was damaged during the Civil War. Its west end collapsed disastrously in 1786, leading to the renewal and reworking of the exterior by James Wyatt. Little was changed in the interior until the striking Victorian rationalisation by George Gilbert Scott.

Book Synopsis Poetry and Music in Seventeenth-Century England by : Diane Kelsey McColley
Download or read book Poetry and Music in Seventeenth-Century England written by Diane Kelsey McColley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-12-11 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the relationship between the poetic language of Donne, Herbert, Milton and other British poets, and the choral music and part-songs of composers including Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons, Weelkes and Tomkins. The seventeenth century was the time in English literary history when music was most consciously linked to words, and when the mingling of Renaissance and 'new' philosophy opened new discovery routes for the interpretation of art. McColley offers close readings of poems and the musical settings of analogous texts, and discusses the philosophy, performance, and disputed political and ecclesiastical implications of polyphony. She also enters into the discourse about the nature of language, relating poets' use of language and composers' use of music to larger questions concerning the arts, politics and theology.
