This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Order of Things: The Realism of the Principle of Finality is an exploration of the metaphysical principle, “Every agent acts for an end.” In the first part, Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange sets forth the basics of the Aristotelian metaphysics of teleology, defending its place as a central point of metaphysics. After defending its per se nota character, he summarizes a number of main corollaries to the principle, primarily within the perspective established by traditional Thomistic accounts of metaphysics, doing so in a way that is pedagogically sensitive yet speculatively profound. In the second half of The Order of Things, Garrigou-Lagrange gathers together a number of articles which he had written, each having some connection with themes concerning teleology. Thematically, the texts consider the finality and teleology of the human intellect and will, along with the way that the principle of finality sheds light on certain problems associated with the distinction between faith and reason. Finally, the text ends with an important essay on the principle of the mutual interdependence of causes, causae ad invicem sunt causae, sed in diverso genere.
Book Synopsis Design Discourse in Abrahamic Traditions by : E.V.R. Kojonen
Download or read book Design Discourse in Abrahamic Traditions written by E.V.R. Kojonen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-11 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design Discourse in Abrahamic Traditions reconnects discussion of design arguments to its Jewish, Christian, and Muslim history. The ancient idea that there is evidence of purpose in nature remains one of the most debated topics in science and religion, but also one with great potential for inter-religious and interdisciplinary dialogue. This volume revitalizes current discussion by retrieving perspectives from the Abrahamic history of design arguments and engaging them with contemporary ideas. Beginning with the encounter ancient philosophy and creation beliefs, the book proceeds to delve deep into issues ranging from the nature of theological and teleological language to the implications of evolution and evil. This rich exploration showcases how, far from being irrelevant in a post-Humean, post-Darwinian world, design arguments continue to merit both popular-level and academic attention. The volume will be of particular interest to scholars working at the intersection of science and religion, philosophers of religion, and theologians.
Book Synopsis Thomistic Common Sense: The Philosophy of Being and the Development of Doctrine by : Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange
Download or read book Thomistic Common Sense: The Philosophy of Being and the Development of Doctrine written by Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite living in an “information age,” we are confronted by the clash of ideologies and a crisis of universal knowledge. The Church is not unaffected by the world’s weariness and similarly faces what Fr. Mauro Gagliardi describes as “the lack of truth, or perhaps better, the disinterest in it.” Today’s philosophical and doctrinal decline are the results of the loss of first principles and a relativistic view of doctrinal development. As Matthew Levering writes in the Foreword, this first-time English translation of Fr. Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange’s Le sens commun: La philosophie de l’être et les formules dogmatiques by the acclaimed translator Matthew Minerd “arrives at an auspicious time.” This book sees the great Dominican master address a variety of fundamental topics that we need to return to and relearn in our day: the relationship between common sense and both philosophy and faith; the proper defense for philosophical realism; the subordination and coordination of philosophical first principles; our natural capacity for knowing God’s existence; and, at length, the problem of dogmatic development. Although originally written during the Catholic Modernist crisis at the turn of the twentieth century, Thomistic Common Sense is no mere relic of past controversies. Jacques Maritain, for example, while reflecting on his formation as a Thomist, cited it as particularly influential. In our own time, this book serves as a foundational textbook of Thomistic philosophy, communicating its wisdom with clarity, power, and perennial resonance.

Many books of moral theology read as though they aren't meant for living people, but this one is addressed to all who have ears to hear! Enchanted by the gift of new life in Christ, Minerd draws upon the Scriptures and the wisdom of the ages to instruct us in the joyful holiness to which we are all called." —Matthew Levering James N. and Mary D. Director of Spiritual Formation and Director of the Institute for Ministry Formation Saint Vincent Seminary, Latrobe, PA "Everyone wants to be happy. Happiness, however, is not easy to realize. One doesn’t become happy accidentally. The happy life must be intentionally sought and habitually practiced. In this book, Dr. Matthew Minerd provides his readers with a roadmap to happiness: a fresh and compelling explanation of why eternal truth, divine grace, and supernatural love are essential for human flourishing. With the loving earnestness of an evangelist and the clear precision of a philosopher, Dr. Minerd neither downplays the glories of grace nor shies away from difficult moral questions. All who are serious about being truly happy will want to read—and to re-read!—this book." —Fr. Cajetan Cuddy, O.P. Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception Dominican House of Studies, Washington, D.C. "Matthew Minerd’s Made by God, Made for God is a gem of a book. Here is a thoroughly Catholic work of theology, inspired by the Fathers of the Church, east and west, as well as St. Thomas Aquinas and Vatican II (and the pontificates following the Council). One comes away with a clear sense that the Christian moral life is an invitation to supernatural (and mystical) life with God—one which absorbs and includes the natural truths of reason and human flourishing, but which brings them to divine heights, sharing in the trinitarian life of God himself. I’ve definitely found my new textbook for Moral Theology—the joy and freedom of the Christian life are on full display!" —Andrew Swafford Associate Professor of Theology Benedictine College Atchison, Kansas "So many seem to think that the Catholic faith is all about being crushed under a burden of rules and regulations that are impossible to keep. This book shatters that misconception. It shows that following Jesus as a Catholic Christian is all about a new way of life, empowered by the Holy Spirit, that makes us each day more life Jesus. A refreshing, encouraging, and enlightening read!" —Marcellino D’Ambrosio Author and Speaker Crossroads Initiative "Dr. Matthew Minerd fills a great need with this outstanding introduction to moral theology. Relying on Scripture and the broad Thomist tradition, this short volume provides a readable and organized treatment of the central elements that comprise the Christian life. Minerd grounds the study in the life of grace itself and then deftly moves though the theological virtues, natural law, and finally the cardinal virtues. Indeed, the virtue of this book is the lofty theological and spiritual synthesis that emerges to shine light on our high calling." —Jon Kirwin Assistant Professor of Theology and Director of Graduate Theology
Book Synopsis On Divine Revelation: The Teaching of the Catholic Faith Vol. One by : Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange
Download or read book On Divine Revelation: The Teaching of the Catholic Faith Vol. One written by Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2022-05-27 with total page 953 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In On Divine Revelation—one of Garrigou-Lagrange’s most significant works, here available in English for the very first time—he offers a classic treatment of this foundational topic. It is an organized and thorough defense of both the rationality and supernaturality of divine revelation. He presents a careful yet stimulating account of the scientific character of theology, the nature of revelation itself, mystery, dogma, the grace of faith, the powers of human reason, false interpretations thereof (rationalism, naturalism, agnosticism, and pantheism), the motives of credibility, and much more. Though written a century ago, On Divine Revelation will restore confidence in theology as a distinct and unified science and return focus to the fundamental questions of the doctrine of revelation. It also serves as a salutary corrective to contemporary theology’s anthropocentrism and concern with what is relative in revelation and religious experience by reorienting our theological attention to what is most certain, central, and sure in our knowledge of divine revelation: the Triune God who has revealed his inner life and salvific will. Readers will see the great splendor of the gift of divine revelation: radiant with credibility before the gaze of reason and drawing our supernatural assent to the mysteries through the gift of faith. As Fr. Cajetan Cuddy, O.P. observes, “On Divine Revelation . . . is a stunning work of inestimable value. No other subsequent work on this topic has come close to meeting it (much less surpassing it).”
Book Synopsis The Speculative Turn by : Levi Bryant
Download or read book The Speculative Turn written by Levi Bryant and published by re.press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continental philosophy has entered a new period of ferment. The long deconstructionist era was followed with a period dominated by Deleuze, which has in turn evolved into a new situation still difficult to define. However, one common thread running through the new brand of continental positions is a renewed attention to materialist and realist options in philosophy. Among the current giants of this generation, this new focus takes numerous different and opposed forms. It might be hard to find many shared positions in the writings of Badiou, DeLanda, Laruelle, Latour, Stengers, and Zizek, but what is missing from their positions is an obsession with the critique of written texts. All of them elaborate a positive ontology, despite the incompatibility of their results. Meanwhile, the new generation of continental thinkers is pushing these trends still further, as seen in currents ranging from transcendental materialism to the London-based speculative realism movement to new revivals of Derrida. As indicated by the title The Speculative Turn, the new currents of continental philosophy depart from the text-centered hermeneutic models of the past and engage in daring speculations about the nature of reality itself. This anthology assembles authors, of several generations and numerous nationalities, who will be at the center of debate in continental philosophy for decades to come.
Book Synopsis The Sense of Mystery: Clarity and Obscurity in the Intellectual Life by : Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, O.P.

This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sense of Mystery highlights what is clear and what retains the character of mystery in the traditional and Thomistic solution concerning the great problems pertaining to our knowledge in general, to our knowledge of God (whether naturally or supernaturally attained), and to questions pertaining to grace. St. Thomas has fear neither for logic nor for mystery. Indeed, logical lucidity leads him to see in nature those mysteries that speak in their own particular ways of the Creator. Likewise, this same lucidity aids him in putting into strong relief other secrets of a far superior order—those of grace and of the intimate life of God, which would remain unknown were it not for Divine Revelation.
Book Synopsis Reality by : Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange
Download or read book Reality written by Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange was one of the most prominent thomistic neoscholastic theologians of the early and mid-twentieth century. This volume is his attempt to summarize a philosophical and theological worldview by interpreting the teaching of St. Thomas Aquinas and his successors: Reality is seen in light of the central doctrines of the Trinity, of Creation, and of the Incarnation of the Son as Jesus Christ, in Whom humankind is drawn into the life of the Triune God. Garrigou-Lagrange presents 24 thomistic theses as a lens through which to view salvation, the Sacraments, the Mother of the Redeemer, and the spiritual life whereby the divine image is restored in the soul. This work is of interest to any who wish to enhance their understanding of the Catholic theological tradition through an acquaintance with this major and often controversial figure.

Book Synopsis Aquinas's Way to God by : Gaven Kerr OP
Download or read book Aquinas's Way to God written by Gaven Kerr OP and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaven Kerr provides the first book-length study of St. Thomas Aquinas's much neglected proof for the existence of God in De Ente et Essentia Chapter 4. He offers a contemporary presentation, interpretation, and defense of this proof, beginning with an account of the metaphysical principles used by Aquinas and then describing how they are employed within the proof to establish the existence of God. Along the way, Kerr engages contemporary authors who have addressed Aquinas's or similar reasoning. The proof developed in the De Ente is, on Kerr's reading, independent of many of the other proofs in Aquinas's corpus and resistant to the traditional classificatory schemes of proofs of God. By applying a historical and hermeneutical awareness of the philosophical issues presented by Aquinas's thought and evaluating such philosophical issues with analytical precision, Kerr is able to move through the proof and evaluate what Aquinas is saying, and whether what he is saying is true. By means of an analysis of one of Aquinas's earliest proofs, Kerr highlights a foundational argument that is present throughout the much more commonly studied Thomistic writings, and brings it to bear within the context of analytical philosophy, showing its relevance to the contemporary reader.
Book Synopsis The Development of Durkheim's Social Realism by : Robert Alun Jones
Download or read book The Development of Durkheim's Social Realism written by Robert Alun Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-11-04 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the kind of historicist perspective encouraged by Quentin Skinner and Richard Rorty, this book explores the development of Durkheim's social realism. Durkheim argued that social facts should be studied as real, concrete things but Professor Jones argues that his social realism was less a sociological method than a way of speaking and thinking about social phenomena through which Durkheim hoped to secure the allegiance of French citizens to the Third Republic. Professor Jones's book, based on many years' research in this area, takes advantage for the first time of newly discovered lecture notes from Durkheim's philosophy class of 1883–4 and explores the significance of German social science in Durkheim's thought. The Development of Durkheim's Social Realism will be of immense value to graduate students and scholars in sociology, social theory, social and political philosophy and history of ideas.
