The films are transparent in the IR and are extremely hard (Mohs's hardness of about 8). The a-C:H coatings were prepared according to the method of Holland in an RF excited discharge sustained by various hydrocarbon gases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental study of the correlations between ion energy, substrate temperature, and plasma density with hydrogen content, percent sp2 bonding, optical gap, and refractive index of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C) films is presented. A strong dependency between the ion energy used during deposition and the film's microstructure is shown. Moreover, it is revealed that the optical properties of the a-C films are controlled by the concentration and size of sp2 clusters in the film.Through N2 mixing in the source gas, room-temperature nitrogen doped polymeric-like a-C films were demonstrated for the first time. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy revealed an increase in the Fermi level of these films with increased nitrogen content.A proof-of-concept a-C based transparent heat mirror (THM) was demonstrated. It was shown that a-C acts as an oxygen-free protective barrier and anti-reflective coating for Ag films in the THM, increasing the transmission in the visible region by 10-20%.

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of the study of structural features and optical properties of thin films of amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) films prepared by plasma-activated chemical vapor deposition of various hydrocarbon precursors are reviewed. The effect of different factors on the rate of a-C:H films deposition in a DC glow discharge with the magnetron plasma localized near the anode such as voltage, discharge power, gas pressure, relative content of an inert gas in the mixture with a hydrocarbon and other is analyzed. It is shown that the refractive index of a-C:H films can be changed in the interval 2.35-1.55 by increasing the deposition rate and the choice of the appropriate hydrocarbon precursor. The features of the vibration spectra of the diamond-like and polymer-like films are discussed. The correlations of the structural peculiarities and of the optical absorption edge, gap width, and conductivity as well as the absorption spectra in visible region and the ratio of the fundamental bands in Raman scattering spectra are estimated. Examples of using the optical properties of the a-C:H films are given.
Book Synopsis Properties of Amorphous Carbon by : S. R. P. Silva
Download or read book Properties of Amorphous Carbon written by S. R. P. Silva and published by IET. This book was released on 2003 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World experts in amorphous carbon have been drawn together to produce this comprehensive commentary on the current state and future prospects of amorphous carbon, a highly functional material. Amorphous carbon has a wide range of properties that are primarily controlled by the different bond hybridisations possible in such materials. This allows for the growth of an extensive range of thin films that can be tailored for specific applications. Films can range from those with high transparency and which are hard and diamond-like, through to those which are opaque, soft and graphitic-like. Application areas including field emission cathodes, MEMs, electronic devices, medical and optical coatings are now close to market.

Download or read book A Study of the Structural, Optical and Electrical Properties of Nitrogen-doped Hydrogenated Amorphous Carbon written by Joanna Szurmak and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first successfully n-doped a-C:H films grown from mixtures of CH$\sb4$ and N$\sb2$ using the dc saddle-field deposition method are presented. Film composition (IR, RBS) studies showed evidence of bonded nitrogen. A conductivity increase of two orders of magnitude over the control film conductivity characterized the f(N$\sb2)$ = 0.02 sample; the decrease of activation energy from a midgap level of 0.7 eV to 0.2 eV concurred. The activation energy change may be interpreted as a rise of the Fermi level towards the conduction band. Such a shift would be consistent with the introduction of nitrogen donor states below the conduction band edge. Significant conductivity and activation energy changes occurred only with low N concentration: films with N content above f(N$\sb2)$ = 0.02 showed conductivity saturation and a constant activation energy. The films may thus exhibit a "clean" band gap rarely found in a-C:H but important because of its potential for more efficient doping.
