Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farming for Boys The mass of farmers' boys understand that they must carve out their own fortunes. If their parents would afford them some little Opportunity to begin early, - an equal one with the sharp newsboy of the city, - they too would become so shrewd, so self-reliant, so expert at acquisition, even on the farm, that, educated to moderation, they would be too well sat isfied with small gains to be overcome by the seductions of city life. If it be mere money which makes the latter attrae tive, a certainty of being able to acquire it at home would seem to be potent enough to surround with greater attractions the spot on which the farmer's boy may have been born. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture for Common Schools While it is not the province of the public schools, as at present organized, to teach the trades, it is their privilege and their duty to put the child in intelligent touch with the life about him and to use all of the means at hand in the process Of education. Much has been said about the tendency among boys to leave the farm for the town, and many attempts at explana tion and justification have been made. While it is perfectly proper for the boy to leave his father's farm and seek his fortune in a crowded city, sometimes he has gone with the mistaken notion that he could substitute wit for work in life's contest, 01: because Of a lack of appreciation of the dignity Of labor. Sometimes, also, he has gone because he has failed to see his Opportunities on the farm. The fact that he has not always bettered his condition has suggested a possibility of bringing about at least a more intelligent consideration of the question. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living and Working on a Farm: For High School Boys and Girls, in Cities and Towns If you prove to those in charge of the training program that you are qualified for, and really interested in farm work, every effort will be made to place you with a farmer who has indicated a willingness and desire to use relatively inexperienced workers. You will be asked to register for farm work and the farmer will also fill out a form. Then the farmer's request for a worker will be matched with the information on the student registration cards. In that way, it is hoped that boys will be placed on the type of farms they prefer and are best fitted for. The labor training program is not a one-sided affair. The problem of' using inexperienced help is being discussed with farmers at meetings this winter. The farmers are familiar with this entire program, and will recognize that you are not seasoned, experienced farm hands. Another way to get placed on a farm this summer is to do so on your own initiative. If you have farm friends or relatives, get in touch with them. They may have something for you. If you do accept a job, be sure to notify the agency which has your registration card. Otherwise, valuable time may be wasted trying to place you. Those in charge of this program believe that most of the capable and willing city boys who complete this training course and follow the plan outlined for placement will stand a good chance of being placed on farms next summer. They are convinced that the success or failure of your summer will depend on how conscientiously and industriously you prepare and plan for it. The following is a list of books and papers which will help you to know more about living and working on a farm. This respect which he had for children was, I think, the secret of his power over them, which was quite as remarkable as his literary success in writing for them. In a true sense it might be said that he treated. Children as his equals, not through any device or from any scheme, but spontaneously and naturally. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farmer Boy: And How He Became Commander-in-Chief The reader will find that Mr. Heady (uncle Juvi nell) has produced a very entertaining and instructive volume. It is written in a racy, sprightly style, that cannot fail to captivate the mind. Partaking himself of the buoyancy and good humor of boyhood, the author is able to write for the boys in a manner that is at once attractive and profitable. He has written a live book of one, who, though dead, yet speaketh. It is replete with facts, and lessons of wisdom. The virtues are taught both by precept and example, and the vices are held up in all their deformity to warn and save. Religion, too, receives its just tribute, and wears the crown of glory.
