Book excerpt: This inventive picture book relays the events of two hundred years from the unique perspective of a magnificent oak tree, showing how much the world can transform from a single vantage point. From 1775 to the present day, this fascinating framing device lets readers watch as human and animal populations shift and the landscape transitions from country to city. Methods of transportation, communication and energy use progress rapidly while other things hardly seem to change at all. This engaging, eye-opening window into history is perfect for budding historians and nature enthusiasts alike, and the time-lapse quality of the detail-packed illustrations will draw readers in as they pore over each spread to spot the changes that come with each new era. A fact-filled poster is included to add to the fun.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the top of a cliff overlooking the sea was an oak tree that was 365 years old. It was an unimaginable age for the mayflies, tiny creatures who lived only one day. The oak only slept during the winter. The rest of the year, he remained alert. That year, like every year, he began to lose his leaves in autumn. He knew that he was about to go to sleep for the last time! Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author, poet and artist. Celebrated for children’s literature, his most cherished fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl". His books have been translated into every living language, and today there is no child or adult that has not met Andersen's whimsical characters. His fairy tales have been adapted to stage and screen countless times, most notably by Disney with the animated films "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and "Frozen", which is loosely based on "The Snow Queen", in 2013. Thanks to Andersen's contribution to children's literature, his birth date, April 2, is celebrated as International Children's Book Day.

With Visits to the Neighboring Metropolis' is a captivating travelogue that takes readers on a literary tour of Chicago and its surrounding areas during the Columbian Exposition of 1893. Through vivid descriptions and engaging narratives, Butterworth paints a rich picture of the architectural marvels and cultural experiences of the time. Written in a straightforward and accessible style, the book provides insights into the historical significance of the White City and its impact on American society. Hezekiah Butterworth, a renowned author and educator, drew inspiration for this book from his passion for history and his desire to educate young readers about the world around them. His background in writing educational materials for children is evident in the way he presents complex historical events in a way that is easy to understand and engaging for readers of all ages. I highly recommend 'Zigzag Journeys in the White City' to anyone interested in American history, architecture, or the cultural impact of world fairs. Butterworth's detailed account of the Columbian Exposition offers a unique glimpse into a pivotal moment in the country's past, making it a valuable read for both scholars and casual readers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sixth volume of the Buildings of Wales series covers two counties, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion (formerly Cardiganshire) in the south-west of Wales. Like the same authors' Pembrokeshire, the volume covers an architecture still little known, hut encompassing a sweep from prehistoric chambered tombs to the high technology of the world's largest single-span glasshouse. The Buildings of Wales, founded by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner (1902-83), will, when complete, document and describe the architecture of the Principality in seven regional volumes, complementing the sister series on England, Ireland and Scotland. In each one a gazetteer details all buildings of significance from megalithic tombs and Iron Age hill-forts, via grand seventeenth-century houses to Victorian domestic extravaganzas, great industrial centres and monumental public buildings. The countryside is explored to reveal churches, chapels, farmhouses, and traces of early industry. The gazetteer is complemented by an introduction which explains the broader context and builds a complete picture of the country's architectural identity. Each work is illustrated by numerous maps, plans and photographs, completed by glossaries and indexes, and gives a comprehensive and illuminating survey of the buildings of Wales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unforgettable story about a couple who follow their dream of converting a run-down country house into a working bed and breakfast, and what they learn along the way from an old home, a close-knit community, and a parade of extraordinary guests. One spring, Carol Eron Rizzoli and her husband Hugo bought a dilapidated farmhouse in the tiny village of Royal Oak, Maryland, on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay. They spent two years transforming it into a bed and breakfast, which took them twice as long and cost three times as much as they had originally estimated (on the back of a napkin). As they struggled to restore the house and open the B&B, Carol and Hugo were also slowly acquainting themselves with the rural community of Royal Oak, rich in custom and culinary traditions, and populated by neighbors with particular views on politics, hunting, wildlife, and of course, newcomers from the big city. Written with honesty and humor, The House at Royal Oak is a journey to the heart of what it means to start over and chase a dream. Part inspirational account of reinventing yourself at mid-life, part love story about learning what matters most in a relationship, it is above all a book about home: what it means, and the unexpected places we find it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rodger and Jacob are officially military kids. Theyve had to move to new communities across America since they were babies. In South Carolina, the children had an especially difficult time settling in. This move was particularly difficult because it was the first time their dad couldnt come. His orders delayed him for eight months in Kansas. When he finally joined the family in South Carolina, he had to deploy to Kuwait for almost a year. Their mom knew the boys were having a rough time fitting in at school, 2nd and 4th grade was challenging. One good thing about the move was the family lived near the boys grandparents. Grandma loved to cook and Granddad was always outside fixing something. After school, though, when the boys came home they were so unhappy. Jacob insisted on having a bedtime story before he would go to sleep at night. So their mom would make up these really awesome bedtime stories with the boys as the main characters. It helped them to dream of a place where they were happy all the time. This lifted their spirits on the nights they could not sleep. The story begins with Rodger and Jacob visiting their grandmother who is secretly married to the keeper of the old oak tree, Mr. Stimer, whom the boys meet on accident. Later on, the boys begin to realize that the Oak tree is really magical and that little angel children from heaven called Quiblings, make the magic and that the Stimers vow to live this secret double life so the Quiblings dont have to be sad.
