Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ohio Naturalist, Vol. 7: November, 1906 The plerome consists of a bundle of small elongated cells surrounded by a sheath of larger cells and the periblem consists of two layers with an inner limiting layer. The sheath Of the plerome and the inner layer of the periblem have a common origin as will appear from an inspection of Figs. 36 and 38. The nature of these two layers was not determined. In the mature embryo the cotyledons are well developed but it is difficult to Obtain central sections because of the curving and folding. Usually when one has a central section Of the radicle the sections of the cotyledons will be more or less tangential. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The O. S. U. Naturalist, Vol. 1: November, 1900 In presenting the 0. S. U. Naturalist to the public, a few words may not be out of place as to the motives and purposes which were instrumental in bringing it into existence. The Biological Club of Ohio State University is composed of professors, instructors and students of the several departments of natural history in the Uni versity. These departments have been carrying on certain lines Of work for some time, and the more important and technical has been reported in various publications. Much of the work, however, which is only of local interest, but still of great value in the development of the natural history of the state, has had no convenient avenue of publication. For this reason it was thought advisable to begin a journal in a modest way in which such material together with other articles might be made available for immediate use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Naturalist, 1906, Vol. 40: An Illustrated Magazine of Natural History It is so rapid that it is not easily recognized at any great distance until experience has sharpened the eye. Therein lies, I think, the cause of the birth Of the aeroplane theory, though I must add that experience need not necessarily sharpen even good natural sight into being able to see the wing-movement. Knack or chance may come in in such matters. Some time ago, for instance, I was astonished, whilst testing the shooting of a shot-and-ball gun at the butts, to find that in certain lights I could plainly see the ball during its whole flight, whilst the attendant whose daily busi ness it was to test rifles and guns, and whose sight was far supe rior to mine, tried over and over again but could not pick it up. So have I seen many watch the whirring wings and declare them to be still. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Scholarship Reconsidered by : Ernest L. Boyer
Download or read book Scholarship Reconsidered written by Ernest L. Boyer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shifting faculty roles in a changing landscape Ernest L. Boyer's landmark book Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate challenged the publish-or-perish status quo that dominated the academic landscape for generations. His powerful and enduring argument for a new approach to faculty roles and rewards continues to play a significant part of the national conversation on scholarship in the academy. Though steeped in tradition, the role of faculty in the academic world has shifted significantly in recent decades. The rise of the non-tenure-track class of professors is well documented. If the historic rule of promotion and tenure is waning, what role can scholarship play in a fragmented, unbundled academy? Boyer offers a still much-needed approach. He calls for a broadened view of scholarship, audaciously refocusing its gaze from the tenure file and to a wider community. This expanded edition offers, in addition to the original text, a critical introduction that explores the impact of Boyer's views, a call to action for applying Boyer's message to the changing nature of faculty work, and a discussion guide to help readers start a new conversation about how Scholarship Reconsidered applies today.

Download or read book Consilience written by E. O. Wilson and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • "A dazzling journey across the sciences and humanities in search of deep laws to unite them." —The Wall Street Journal One of our greatest scientists—and the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes for On Human Nature and The Ants—gives us a work of visionary importance that may be the crowning achievement of his career. In Consilience (a word that originally meant "jumping together"), Edward O. Wilson renews the Enlightenment's search for a unified theory of knowledge in disciplines that range from physics to biology, the social sciences and the humanities. Using the natural sciences as his model, Wilson forges dramatic links between fields. He explores the chemistry of the mind and the genetic bases of culture. He postulates the biological principles underlying works of art from cave-drawings to Lolita. Presenting the latest findings in prose of wonderful clarity and oratorical eloquence, and synthesizing it into a dazzling whole, Consilience is science in the path-clearing traditions of Newton, Einstein, and Richard Feynman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of The Fingerprint Sourcebook originated during a meeting in April 2002. Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.

Book Synopsis The Book of the Damned by : Charles Fort
Download or read book The Book of the Damned written by Charles Fort and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Time travel, UFOs, mysterious planets, stigmata, rock-throwing poltergeists, huge footprints, bizarre rains of fish and frogs-nearly a century after Charles Fort's Book of the Damned was originally published, the strange phenomenon presented in this book remains largely unexplained by modern science. Through painstaking research and a witty, sarcastic style, Fort captures the imagination while exposing the flaws of popular scientific explanations. Virtually all of his material was compiled and documented from reports published in reputable journals, newspapers and periodicals because he was an avid collector. Charles Fort was somewhat of a recluse who spent most of his spare time researching these strange events and collected these reports from publications sent to him from around the globe. This was the first of a series of books he created on unusual and unexplained events and to this day it remains the most popular. If you agree that truth is often stranger than fiction, then this book is for you"--Taken from Good Reads website.
Book Synopsis Faith in a Seed by : Henry D. Thoreau
Download or read book Faith in a Seed written by Henry D. Thoreau and published by Island Press. This book was released on 1993-03-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith in a Seed contains the hitherto unpublished work The Dispersion of Seeds, one of Henry D. Thoreau's last important research and writing projects, and now his first new book to appear in 125 years. With the remarkable clarity and grace that characterize all of his writings, Thoreau describes the ecological succession of plant species through seed dispersal. The Dispersion of Seeds, which draws on Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection, refutes the then widely accepted theory that some plants spring spontaneously to life, independent of roots, cuttings, or seeds. As Thoreau wrote: "Though I do not believe a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed. Convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders." Henry D. Thoreau's Faith in a Seed, was first published in hardcover in 1993 by Island Press under the Shearwater Books imprint, which unifies scientific views of nature with humanistic ones. This important work, the first publication of Thoreau's last manuscript, is now available in paperback. Faith in a Seed contains Thoreau's last important research and writing project, The Dispersion of Seeds, along with other natural history writings from late in his life. Edited by Bradley P. Dean, professor of English at East Carolina University and editor of the Thoreau Society Bulletin, these writings demonstrate how a major American author at the height of his career succeeded in making science and literature mutually enriching.
