Book Synopsis Historic Highway Bridges of Michigan by : Charles K. Hyde
Download or read book Historic Highway Bridges of Michigan written by Charles K. Hyde and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michigan's historic highway bridges are rapidly being torn down and replaced as they deteriorate or become unable to support increased traffic volumes and loads. While the state has the responsibility of providing safe bridges, historian Charles K. Hyde maintains that the state must also preserve many of these remaining historic structures to insure that future generations will have them to view and appreciate. In Historic Highway Bridges of Michigan, Hyde identifies Michigan's historically significant highway bridges within the broader contexts of American bridge design and construction in the 19th and 20th centuries. The book summarizes the improvement of highway bridge design in the United States and compares Michigan's experiences with national trends. To aid the reader interested in visiting the historic highway bridges of Michigan, regional maps show the location of bridges included in the text.

Book excerpt: Modern structural engineering surprises us with the mastery and certainty with which it plans and carries out daring projects, such as the most recent metal or concrete bridges, whether they be suspension or arch bridges. On the other hand, little is yet known about the state of knowledge of construction science and techniques which, well before the arrival of modern methods based on the mechanics of deformable continua, made it possible in the past to erect the vaulted masonry structures rthat we have inherited. The fact that these have lasted through many centuries to our time, and are still in a fairly good state of conservation, makes them competitive, as far as stability and durability are concerned, with those constructed in other materials. Although it is known that the equilibrium of the arch is guaranteed by any funicular whatsoever of the loads, contained inside the profile of an arch, finding the unique solution is not such a certainty. In other words, the problem of the equilibrium of vaulted structures is 'Poleni's problem', the one for which the Venetian scientist was able to give an exemplary solution on the occasion of the assessment of the dome of St. Peter's. Arch Bridges focuses on the main aspects of the debate about the masonry arch bridge: History of structural mechanics and construction, theoretical models, analysis for assessment, numerical methods, experimental and non-destructive testing, maintenance and repair are the topics of the Conference. The breadth and variety of the contributions presented and discussed by leading experts from many countries make this volume an authoritative source of up-to-date information.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bridge Inventory and Inspection system developed by the Ohio Department of Transportation Office of Structural Engineering provides for a collection of Bridge Data History to aid in the design, planning, programming, and financing of bridge maintenance and construction in Ohio, as well as a funding selection base by FHWA. This Data System includes a history of Operational Performance Indices (OPIs) to track bridge performance every year. The purpose is to facilitate maintenance with the objective of keeping deficiencies below specified levels for these OPI ratings. A reliable system model is warranted to predict bridge health and facilitate cost analysis and budget optimization based on forecasts made on Bridge Health. Having realized this need, a particular analytical application of significance is in using this Bridge Data History to arrive at Global and Local Degradation Rates for the bridges in Ohio. Data of relevance is collected from disparate sources, cleaned, formatted and standardized in the pre-processing stage. A suitable design is employed to implement a Data Warehouse for the entire bridge performance history. A First Markov Chain Model is the predictive model of choice. The Markov Model is built in a software network that analyses the effect of variables such as Bridge Age, climate, geographical location, material type and other factors on the health of the statistical population of bridges. The results are the Forecasts made on the OPIs and subsequently, the Degradation rates. Interpretation of these results leads to certain conclusions such as degradation rates are higher in the north as compared to the south. In this analysis, it is observed that maintenance occurs simultaneously on the bridge as it deteriorates with age. To make the Markov Model capable of indicating pure degradation that is separate from maintenance, a strategy called 'Age Reset' is discussed where a bridge is considered new for modeling purposes every time it undergoes a combination of maintenance actions. Also, statistical models for the frequency of maintenance are discussed that are capable of answering maintenance questions like how often a bridge is maintained and identify bridges that are outliers in this aspect. The degradation rates of bridges in Ohio and resulting interpretations guide funding and resource allocation for infrastructure investments and rehabilitation strategies.

Book excerpt: "The overall objective of this project is to update the Inventory of historic bridges within CTDOT's state-maintained roadway network. It will identify historic bridges within the network and categorize the historic significance of all the bridges as eligible or not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The Inventory Update will also provide guidance on the treatment of historic bridges in a manner that would avoid adverse effects. The project will serve as a planning tool for CTDOT and will streamline the evaluation process required under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act for undertakings that receive federal funding."--Abstract.
