The international community increasingly needs Nigerian oil largely because of the political dislocations and uncertainties in some of the major oil-producing regions of the world. But unfortunately the crises in the Niger Delta, which produces most of Nigeria's oil, have also been escalating to alarming proportions, often turning the region into a site of seemingly unending uncertainty and conflicts. The book focuses on Ogoniland - one of the oil-producing communities that make up the Niger Delta. It examines the colonial origins of these crises and their links to the dynamics of petroleum exploitation in the region as well as to the structure of Nigeria's contemporary political economy. It relates the ways in which the crises in Ogoniland are connected to the generalised turmoil in the Niger Delta and argues that they are often exacerbated - rather than attenuated - by the Nigerian federal process and its unique combination of militarism, ethnicity and religion. ________________________________________________________________ Sanya Osha holds a PhD in Philosophy and has held various teaching and research positions in Nigeria, the United States, the Netherlands, and South Africa. It then presents a detailed study of the Yaa cultural tradition of the Ogoni from pre-colonial to present times; their history and politics; and considers the perspective of youth leadership and training. The study illustrates how the Yaa cultural tradition determined social class structures, discouraged anti-social behaviour, and inculcated attitudes of generosity and diligence, and knowledge of the arts in those growing up in the tradition. The author goes on to show how the teaching of this tradition affected youth organisations, particularly MOSOP, one of the most effective modern youth movements in the Niger Delta region today; and suggests that some of the lessons might be integrated into national education policies. The author is Senior Lecturer in Political History at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

The author's field studies among the Ijo, Ibibio, and Ibo peoples have made possible an analysis of the essential processes of economic and political transformation which lay behind the oral traditions. There are also detailed and often lively accounts of the European traders. The study concentrates on the two principal Oil Rivers states which nineteenth century writers called New Calabar and Grand Bonny. For purposes of comparison the adjacent states of Brass (Nem?) and Okrika, the Andoni peoples and the Efik state known to Europeans as Old Calabar are also examined. The study ends in 1884, the year that marks the beginning of the Brithsh Protectorate government and with it the end of indigenous systems of government which characterised these Oil River States during the nineteenth century. The monarchies established in the eighteenth century by King Pepple of Bonny and King Armakiri of Kalabari and the political and economic organisations developed under their rule were coming to, or had already come to, an end, with new oligarchies developing in their place.
