Book Synopsis The Covenant of Works by : J. V. Fesko
Download or read book The Covenant of Works written by J. V. Fesko and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of "the covenant of works" arose to prominence in the late sixteenth century and quickly became a regular feature in Reformed thought. Theologians believed that when God first created man he made a covenant with him: all Adam had to do was obey God's command to not eat from the tree of knowledge and obey God's command to be fruitful, multiply, and subdue the earth. The reward for Adam's obedience was profound: eternal life for him and his offspring. The consequences of his disobedience were dire: God would visit death upon Adam and his descendants. In the covenant of works, Adam was not merely an individual but served as a public person, the federal head of the human race. The Covenant of Works explores the origins of the doctrine of God's covenant with Adam and traces it back to the inter-testamental period, through the patristic and middle ages, and to the Reformation. The doctrine has an ancient pedigree and was not solely advocated by Reformed theologians. The book traces the doctrine's development in the seventeenth century and its reception in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. Fesko explores the reasons why the doctrine came to be rejected by some, even in the Reformed tradition, arguing that interpretive methods influenced by Enlightenment thought caused theologians to question the doctrine's scriptural legitimacy.
Book Synopsis The Covenant of Redemption by : Samuel Willard
Download or read book The Covenant of Redemption written by Samuel Willard and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2014-07-21 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unparalleled and incomprehensible love of God to sinful man, displayed in the wonderful affair of his redemption and salvation, is the great thing celebrated throughout the Scriptures. This work is found in the covenant between the Father and the Son, called in theology, “The Covenant of Redemption.” Willard clearly and biblically explains the Covenant of Redemption dividing the entire treatise into two general heads in order to explain the glorious mystery of this covenant. 1) The provision which God made for our deliverance before time in eternity, and 2) The things which are done in time for its actual accomplishment. From these two main points he covers a right understanding of what a covenant is, how the covenant is found clearly in Scripture, how this covenant was necessary in relationship to man’s salvation, and lastly, what the influence is which the covenant of redemption has to the covenant of grace, which is made with us. His final two chapters cover application by way of exhortation and consolation. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.
Book Synopsis Covenant Theology Made Easy by : C. Matthew McMahon
Download or read book Covenant Theology Made Easy written by C. Matthew McMahon and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2009-08-03 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reason this book exists is to give the Christian church a basic overview of Covenant Theology that 1) follows the Bible, 2) follows The 1647 Westminster Confession, and, 3) is easy to work through. There has not been a book like this that follows the Bible, Westminsterian Theology, or the magnum opus of Herman Witsius (which is a watershed work on Covenant Theology called “The Economy of the Covenants Between God and Man”). This work follows the outline of Witsius and places these theologically important concepts into an easy to understand format. If nothing else has been read on Covenant Theology, this work would be a helpful volume to teach the serious bible student the fundamentals of the Christian faith in the same way that the Early Church, Augustinian Christians, Reformers and Puritans taught Covenant Theology. (The author has also written, “A Simple Overview of Covenant Theology” which could be a helpful resource and precursor to this volume.) Book Synopsis Understanding End Times Prophecy by : Paul Benware
Download or read book Understanding End Times Prophecy written by Paul Benware and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians think of end times prophecy as a gigantic, intimidating puzzle -- difficult to piece together and impossible to figure out. But every puzzle can be solved if you approach it the right way. Paul Benware compares prophecy to a picture puzzle. Putting the edge pieces together first builds the 'framework' that makes it easier to fit the other pieces in their place. According to Benware, the framework for eschatology is the biblical covenants. He begins his comprehensive survey by explaining the major covenants. Then he discusses several different interpretations of end times prophecy. Benware digs into the details of the Rapture, the Great Tribulation, the judgements and resurrections, and the millennial kingdom. But he also adds a unique, personal element to the study, answering questions as: -Why study bible prophecy? -What difference does it make if I'm premillenial or amillenial? If what the Bible says about the future puzzles you, Understanding End Times Prophecy will help you put together the pieces and see the big picture.
