Wells,' readers are taken on a journey through the imaginative and thought-provoking works of one of the most renowned science fiction writers of the 19th century. Wells' literary style is characterized by his ability to blend scientific concepts with social commentary, creating stories that are not only entertaining but also thought-provoking. The collection covers a range of themes, from time travel and alien invasions to ethical dilemmas and societal issues, showcasing Wells' versatility as a writer in the literary context of Victorian science fiction. Each story presents a unique perspective on humanity's future and the consequences of technological advancements, making this collection a must-read for fans of speculative fiction. H. G. Wells, known for his groundbreaking novels such as 'The War of the Worlds' and 'The Time Machine,' was a visionary writer who used his works to explore the possibilities and pitfalls of a rapidly changing world. His keen insight into human nature and his ability to foresee the impact of scientific progress on society set him apart as a pioneer of the science fiction genre. It is evident that Wells' own experiences and observations of the world around him influenced his writing, making his stories both relatable and relevant to contemporary readers. I highly recommend 'The Collected Short Stories of H. G. Wells' to readers who are interested in exploring the intersection of science, society, and human nature through the lens of speculative fiction. This collection is a testament to Wells' enduring legacy as a master storyteller and a pioneer of the science fiction genre.

Book excerpt: This eBook edition of "NO MAN'S LAND (A WW1 Saga)" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Herman Cyril McNeile (1888-1937) commonly known as H. C. McNeile or Sapper, was a British soldier and author. Drawing on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War, he started writing short stories and getting them published in the Daily Mail. McNeile's stories are either directly about the war, or contain people whose lives have been shaped by it. His war stories were considered by contemporary audiences as anti-sentimental, realistic depictions of the trenches, and as a "celebration of the qualities of the Old Contemptibles". Extract: "It was from the top of the Rock that they watched their evil-smelling boat depart, to plug on northward up the home trail, unperturbed by naval battles or rumours thereof. And it was from the top of the Rock they first saw the smoke of the P. and O., outward bound, on which they were destined to complete the journey. Below lay the bay, dotted with German and Austrian ships caught on the high seas at the outbreak of war; a destroyer was going half-speed towards the Atlantic; a cruiser lay in dock, her funnels smoking placidly. "So long." The gunner subaltern waved a weary hand from his point of vantage, where he was inspecting life with a telescope. "There's your barge, but she won't leave till to-morrow. If this goes on for much longer, my nerves will give way under the strain. The excitement is too great."

When Cafferty enters a nest underneath the Nevada desert, he is horrified to find it completely empty. It can only mean one thing: the battle for survival is not over. Across the planet, creatures are emerging from their subterranean homes. Now, the all-out war against humanity has begun—a war in which only one apex species will survive. Humankind has finally met its match. Cafferty knows that only one man can help him stop the onslaught. A man who is despised by the world. A man who has already caused the death of millions. A man who is a sworn enemy hell-bent on taking Tom Cafferty down forever: Albert Van Ness. But even this desperate move may not be enough to stop the creatures and save humanity . . .
