Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "By examining a suite of over 90 indicators for nine major U.S. fishery ecosystem jurisdictions, Link and Marshak systematically track the progress the U.S. has made toward advancing ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) and making it an operational reality. Covering a range of socioeconomic, governance, environmental forcing, major pressures, systems ecology, and fisheries criteria, they evaluate progress toward EBFM in the U.S., covering a wide range of longitude, latitude, and parts of major ocean basins, representing over 10% of the world’s ocean surface area. They view progress toward the implementation of EBFM as synonymous with improved management of living marine resources in general, and highlight lessons learned from a national perspective. Although US-centric, the lessons learned are applicable for all parts of the global ocean. Though much work remains, significant progress has been made to better address many of the challenges facing the sustainable management of our living marine resources"--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis The Rockfishes of the Northeast Pacific by : Milton S. Love
Download or read book The Rockfishes of the Northeast Pacific written by Milton S. Love and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A major landmark contribution to fisheries science and fish ecology. Rockfish populations are in a severe decline throughout the Northeastern Pacific, and the need for a deep understanding of their biology, ecology, and management has never been more critical. This book addresses all aspects of our current knowledge of this diverse and interesting group of groundfish species, and it is written clearly and with humor. An outstanding work!"--Larry G. Allen, California State University, Northridge "Quite simply the best account ever of the fascinating, diverse, and valuable rockfishes. If you are interested in the marine fishes of the Pacific Coast, you need this book."--Peter B. Moyle, author of Inland Fishes of California

Book Synopsis Potential Overlap Between Cetaceans and Commercial Groundfish Fleets that Operate in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem by : Blake Edward Feist
Download or read book Potential Overlap Between Cetaceans and Commercial Groundfish Fleets that Operate in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem written by Blake Edward Feist and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cetacean populations are confronted by many anthropogenic threats, including commercial whaling, noise, vessel collisions, gear entanglement, exploitative competition, habitat disturbance, and global climate change. Evidence indicates that commercial fishing activities can have both direct (e.g., gear entanglement and bycatch) and indirect (e.g., prey reduction and noise) effects on cetaceans. However, few studies have addressed the potential vulnerability of a given cetacean species to an entire fishing fleet that operates over a large marine ecosystem. In this study, we overlaid spatially explicit multiyear predicted mean densities of 11 cetacean species and 1 species guild within the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem with data for commercial fishing effort of the fixed-gear, at-sea hake mid-water trawl, and bottom trawl fleets of the west coast groundfish fishery. We quantified the exposure of each species to each fleet type by multiplying the predicted mean cetacean density by the measured fishing fleet effort. We found large interspecific and interfleet variability in the overlap between cetaceans and fishing fleets. Although many of the species had relatively low overlap rates, others had substantial exposure to some of the fishing fleets, particularly those species with more nearshore distributions. Direct mortality from these fleets has been documented to be low, but our results indicate that there is opportunity for fisheries interactions with some cetacean species, particularly in the fixed-gear fleet. Our analyses make up an important first step in generating formal risk assessments for quantification of the impacts of various fishing fleets on populations of cetacean species that occur in the California Current.

Book Synopsis The Future of Fisheries Science in North America by : Richard J. Beamish
Download or read book The Future of Fisheries Science in North America written by Richard J. Beamish and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-07 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries science in North America is changing in response to a changing climate, new technologies, an ecosystem approach to management and new thinking about the processes affecting stock and recruitment. Authors of the 34 chapters review the science in their particular fields and use their experience to develop informed opinions about the future. Everyone associated with fish, fisheries and fisheries management will find material that will stimulate their thinking about the future. Readers will be impressed with the potential for new discoveries, but disturbed by how much needs to be done in fisheries science if we are to sustain North American fisheries in our changing climate. Officials that manage or fund fisheries science will appreciate the urgency for the new information needed for the stewardship of fish populations and their ecosystems. Research organizations may want to keep some extra copies for a future look back into the thoughts of a wide range of fisheries professionals. Fisheries science has been full of surprises with some of the surprises having major economic impacts. It is important to minimize these impacts as the demand for seafood increases and the complexities of fisheries management increase.
