Book excerpt: On the surface, Aidan's life seems no different from any other young man living during the waning years of the 18th century; he has a charming girlfriend, a thriving clock shop, and a sizable stretch of land. While repairing his late father's pocket watch, he deciphers a hidden message that unlocks the truth of his lineage and plunges him into a world filled with malevolent mysticism. Aidan's journey takes him through enchanted forests, across sprawling country sides, and into the underbelly of corrupt cities where he battles political adversaries who will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Buddha's teachings center around two basic principles. One is the Four Noble Truths, in which the Buddha diagnoses the problem of suffering and indicates the treatment necessary to remedy this problem. The other is the Noble Eightfold Path, the practical discipline he prescribes to uproot and eliminate the deep underlying causes of suffering. The present book offers, in simple and clear language, a concise yet thorough explanation of the Eightfold Path. Basing himself solidly upon the Buddha's own words, the author examines each factor of the path to determine exactly what it implies in the way of practical training. Finally, in the concluding chapter, he shows how all eight factors of the path function in unison to bring about the realization of the Buddhist goal: enlightenment and liberation.

As you read The Noble and Great Ones, four questions will occupy your mind. First, "Am I on a course that is in harmony with the unique gifts and talents I have been given?" Second, "What changes do I need to make in order to discover and embrace my true identity?" Third, "How can I know when I am heading in the right direction?" And Fourth, "Why should I make the effort?" In The Noble and Great Ones, you will learn about individuals who possessed great talent and the ability to impact humanity significantly. Their stories and achievements will help you answer these four questions. As you read The Noble and Great Ones, you will want to pause, ponder, and reflect upon the remarkable accomplishments of the individuals chosen. You may reflect on the challenges they overcame, the unique gifts and talents they discovered early in life, and the degree to which they became legendary in their respective disciplines and in leaving a legacy for humanity. It is my hope that by reading this book, the desire to uncover your own unique gifts, talents and abilities will awaken you to a sense of the nobility and greatness within you. No matter what adversity you may be experiencing, what falsehoods you may have adopted, or what self-image is holding you back from reaching your true potential. In this journey of life it is essential that we remember, "It's not about proportions, it's what's in the glass that matters most." There is nobility and an aptitude for greatness within each of us. The sequence of these two adjectives matters. Greatness unbridled by the reigns of nobility can be intoxicating, self-destructive and infamous. History bears witness that those who focus on greatness alone can become a scourge to humanity, while they that place nobility before greatness usually attain both. Living a Noble and Great life means living the life you were meant to live. It means recognizing the gifts you have been given and magnifying them for the benefit of others and for the glory of God. As you so live, others will be encouraged and inspired to test their limitations and overcome their perceived shortcomings, setbacks, and yet unfulfilled dreams. The Noble and Great Ones will help you find, acknowledge, and be grateful for the divine substance within you. As you exchange frivolous habits of self-indulgence for enduring and enriching habits of self-discovery and self-improvement, you will change your very nature. In so doing you will experience more joy and fulfillment than you have ever imagined. There is nobility and greatness within you, now go and find it!

Book excerpt: Based on the Zen philosophy that we learn more from our failures than from our successes, One Continuous Mistake teaches a refreshing new method for writing as spiritual practice. In this unique guide for writers of all levels, Gail Sher—a poet who is also a widely respected teacher of creative writing—combines the inspirational value of Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way with the spiritual focus of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind. Here she introduces a method of discipline that applies specific Zen practices to enhance and clarify creative work. She also discusses bodily postures that support writing, how to set up the appropriate writing regimen, and how to discover one's own "learning personality." In the tradition of such classics as Writing Down the Bones and If You Want to Write, One Continuous Mistake will help beginning writers gain access to their creative capabilities while serving as a perennial reference that working writers can turn to again and again for inspiration and direction.

Book excerpt: The four noble truths were the Buddhas first statements to his first disciples on the essence of his awakening. Earlier he had made a statement, with no witnesses, saying that what he had discovered upon his awakening was luminous, utterly tranquil, peaceful, beyond elaboration, and inconceivable. Lama Yeshe Gyamtso gives an elegant presentation of the four noble truths, introducing several aspects of the Buddhist outlook, including the four seals, which are connected to the truth of suffering; the four mindfulnesses, which are the means through which you begin to abandon the cause of suffering; the four views, which are primarily views of cessation; and the four reliances, which are how to find a practical path. The teaching is both accessible to beginners and informative to long-standing practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have written this book, Buddho, so that readers will come to understand the correct meaning and use of the word “Buddho.” There are those who wrongly believe that by just reciting the word “Buddho” they are able to rid defilements and cravings (kilesa) from their minds, then expecting wisdom to arise which will enable them to realize how thing really are (the Truth). However, just reciting repetitiously the parikamma word “Buddho” does not make one reach purity of mind (citta) and gain Noble Fruitions, and Nibbana. The use of the word “Buddho” has two distinct applications in these Dhamma practices: Samatha (tranquility meditation) Vipassana (gaining wisdom) These two types of Dhamma practice, samatha and vipassana, have different purposes and ways to practice. You will know and understand those differences by reading this book. Please read with rational discernment and come to the correct understanding. Once you understand the correct meaning and use of “Buddho,” Dhamma practice will not be confusing. In your present life, if you have accumulated sufficient merit and virtue (parami), you shall reach one of the four stages of Noble Fruitions. If not, you will reincarnate in the era of the next Lord Buddha, Buddha Metteyya.” You will listen to his Dhamma, develop wisdom and see the Truth. You will reach the ultimate state of Nibbana, becoming an arahant. In the present life, consider yourself as a lucky person to become a Buddhist disciple. Do not let this good opportunity go by. Put forth great effort to practice Dhamma and strive to accumulate merit and virtue. If you miss this good opportunity in the present life, it is uncertain that you will reincarnate to become a Buddhist again as in the present life. In this life, you have responsibilities and work to do, so just keep doing them as your duty. As your special task, keep practicing Dhamma and accumulate virtue and merit, for these will go with you when you pass away from this world. It will be the benefit of life and your real treasure. Finally, my wish for you is that you gain discernment and wisdom to see the real view of the Truth in this present life. Phra Acariya Thoon Khippapanno

Many in recovery turn to the Twelve Steps to overcome their addictions, but struggle with the spiritual program. But what they might not realize is that Buddhist teachings are intrinsically intertwined with the lessons of the Twelve Steps, and offer time-tested methods for addressing the challenges of sobriety. In what is considered the cornerstone of the most significant recovery movement of the 21st century, Kevin Griffin shares his own extraordinary journey to sobriety and how he integrated the Twelve Steps of recovery with Buddhist mindfulness practices. With a new foreword by William Alexander, the author of Ordinary Recovery, One Breath at a Time takes you on a journey through the Steps, examining critical ideas like Powerlessness, Higher Power, and Moral Inventory through the lens of the core concepts of Buddhism—the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, mindfulness, loving-kindness, and more. The result is a book that presents techniques and meditations for finding clarity and awareness in your life, just as it has for thousands of addicts and alcoholics.

Book excerpt: This book offers a clear, concise account of the Eightfold Path prescribed to uproot and eliminate the deep underlying cause of suffering--ignorance. Each step of the path is believed to cultivate wisdom through mental training, and includes an enlightened and peaceful middle path that avoids extremes. The theoretical as well as practical angles of each of the paths--right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration--are illustrated through examples from contemporary life. The work's final chapter addresses the Buddhist path and its culmination in enlightenment.
