Book excerpt: In the tradition of Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel, this gives the very early history of how human ingenuity overcame the risk of famine through productive agriculture. Starting with a layman's guide to the chemistry of nitrogen fixation, the book goes on to show how humans emerged from nomadic lifestyles and began developing towns and settlements. When they for the first time began planting the same fields year after year, they noticed quickly the need to ensure soil fertility. But how? The method they came up with is still in use to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past three decades there has been a large amount of research on biological nitrogen fixation, in part stimulated by increasing world prices of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and environmental concerns. In the last several years, research on plant--microbe interactions, and symbiotic and asymbiotic nitrogen fixation has become truly interdisciplinary in nature, stimulated to some degree by the use of modern genetic techniques. These methodologies have allowed us to make detailed analyses of plant and bacterial genes involved in symbiotic processes and to follow the growth and persistence of the root-nodule bacteria and free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria in soils. Through the efforts of a large number of researchers we now have a better understanding of the ecology of rhizobia, environmental parameters affecting the infection and nodulation process, the nature of specificity, the biochemistry of host plants and microsymbionts, and chemical signalling between symbiotic partners. This volume gives a summary of current research efforts and knowledge in the field of biological nitrogen fixation. Since the research field is diverse in nature, this book presents a collection of papers in the major research area of physiology and metabolism, genetics, evolution, taxonomy, ecology, and international programs.

Book Synopsis Biological Nitrogen Fixation by : Frans J. de Bruijn
Download or read book Biological Nitrogen Fixation written by Frans J. de Bruijn and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 2250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen is arguably the most important nutrient required by plants. However, the availability of nitrogen is limited in many soils and although the earth's atmosphere consists of 78.1% nitrogen gas (N2) plants are unable to use this form of nitrogen. To compensate , modern agriculture has been highly reliant on industrial nitrogen fertilizers to achieve maximum crop productivity. However, a great deal of fossil fuel is required for the production and delivery of nitrogen fertilizer. Moreover carbon dioxide (CO2) which is released during fossil fuel combustion contributes to the greenhouse effect and run off of nitrate leads to eutrophication of the waterways. Biological nitrogen fixation is an alternative to nitrogen fertilizer. It is carried out by prokaryotes using an enzyme complex called nitrogenase and results in atmospheric N2 being reduced into a form of nitrogen diazotrophic organisms and plants are able to use (ammonia). It is this process and its major players which will be discussed in this book. Biological Nitrogen Fixation is a comprehensive two volume work bringing together both review and original research articles on key topics in nitrogen fixation. Chapters across both volumes emphasize molecular techniques and advanced biochemical analysis approaches applicable to various aspects of biological nitrogen fixation. Volume 1 explores the chemistry and biochemistry of nitrogenases, nif gene regulation, the taxonomy, evolution, and genomics of nitrogen fixing organisms, as well as their physiology and metabolism. Volume 2 covers the symbiotic interaction of nitrogen fixing organisms with their host plants, including nodulation and symbiotic nitrogen fixation, plant and microbial "omics", cyanobacteria, diazotrophs and non-legumes, field studies and inoculum preparation, as well as nitrogen fixation and cereals. Covering the full breadth of current nitrogen fixation research and expanding it towards future advances in the field, Biological Nitrogen Fixation will be a one-stop reference for microbial ecologists and environmental microbiologists as well as plant and agricultural researchers working on crop sustainability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of an international meeting held from June 28 to July 1, 1981, at Zif, Zentrum far Interdisziplin~re Forschung an der Universit~t Bielefeld, West Germany. The meeting was one of a continuing series organized through Zif on topics which transcend the boundaries of the traditional academic disciplines. The almost exponentially growing area of nitrogen fixation research fits this criterion completely. It is, however, so broad that we oriented and focused the meeting on just the chemical, biochemical, and genetic aspects to maximize the interaction among the participants and to produce a volume which would serve as a reference source for the involved researcher, the newly interested scientist and those with a more casual interest. The meeting was generously supported by Zif, the Westf~lisch Lippische Universit~tsgesellschaft, and the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie. We sincerely thank these organizations for their generosity and interest and for recognizing the importance of nitrogen fixation research for the future of mankind.

Book Synopsis The Ecology of the Nitrogen Cycle by : Janet I. Sprent
Download or read book The Ecology of the Nitrogen Cycle written by Janet I. Sprent and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-12-10 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people learn the rudiments of the nitrogen cycle while at school, but the details of the various processes in the cycle are still not widely understood. Some of them are of great current interest, such as the use of nitrogen fixing crops to feed an increasing world population and the problems of pollution of groundwaters by nitrates. Denitrification (forming nitrogen gas) as a way of getting rid of waste from human and intensively farmed animals. This book describes the general processes of the nitrogen cycle, then gives examples of how the cycle is modified under particular ecological and geographical conditions. These examples are drawn from all the major areas of the world, and the impact of man via agriculture, forestry and fuel combustion is discussed. Numerous references are included. The book provides a background for all those whose specialist interests interact with nitrogen cycling, whether they are involved in research or have responsibility for managing the environment.
Book Synopsis Genetics and Regulation of Nitrogen Fixation in Free-Living Bacteria by : Werner Klipp

This book was released on 2006-01-28 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetics and Regulation of Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria This book is the second volume of a seven-volume series, which covers all fields of research related to nitrogen fixation - from basic studies through applied aspects to environmental impacts. Volume II provides a comprehensive and detailed source of information concerning the genetics and regulation of biological nitrogen fixation in free-living prokaryotes. This preface attempts to provide the reader with some insight into how this volume originated, how it was planned, and then how it developed over the several years of its production. Once the editorial team was established, the first job was to decide which of the many free-living diazotrophs that have been subjected to genetic analysis should be included in this volume. Would we need to develop specific criteria for selection or would the organisms, in effect, select themselves? Of course, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Azotobacter vinelandii, which have served (and still serve) as the main model organisms for the genetic analysis of diazotrophy, plus some of the other bacteria described in this volume, did indeed select themselves. However, there was considerable discussion surrounding well-characterized fixing species, like Azorhizobium caulinodans and Herbaspirillum seropedicae, both of which are able to fix atmospheric N under free-living conditions.

Book Synopsis Nitrogen Fixation: Biology and Ecology by : Sara Langer
Download or read book Nitrogen Fixation: Biology and Ecology written by Sara Langer and published by Murphy & Moore Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of converting atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia and other nitrogenous compounds in soil is termed as nitrogen fixation. Most of the biological nitrogen is fixed by prokaryotic bacteria. A few of these are cyanobacteria, azotobacter, azospirillum, rhizobium and bradyrhizobium. Clover, soybean, peanut, etc., are some of the plants which help in nitrogen fixation process. These processes are part of the nitrogen cycle. They are of utmost significance in agriculture as nitrogen is required for the synthesis of various organic compounds like amino acids, nucleic acids and proteins. Nitrogen is also fixed by natural phenomenon such as lightning. It is also responsible for the formation of nitrogen oxides which may react with water to form nitrous acid or nitric acid. The acids seep into the soil where they are converted into nitrates. This book includes some of the vital pieces of work being conducted across the world, on various topics related to nitrogen fixation. From theories to research to practical applications, case studies related to all contemporary topics of relevance to this field have been included in it. This book is a vital tool for all researching or studying the biological and ecological aspects of nitrogen fixation as it gives incredible insights into emerging trends and concepts.
