(–Booklist STARRED review) One of Atlanta Journal-Constitution's "Hot New Summer Books"! Everybody's got good and bad in them. In the end, it just depends which side wins out. Arlene has lived in a small town on the edge of nowhere Georgia her whole life. Now married to her long-time high school sweetheart, Tommy, Arlene is itching to start a family and become the mother she always dreamed of being. But that's proving more difficult than she thought, and Arlene is desperate to find something to do to keep her mind off things. And get some distance from her husband, who is increasingly getting on her nerves. As the summer gives way to a chilly, lonesome fall up in the mountains of northern Georgia, she takes a part-time job bagging evidence at the local police department, which involves about twenty minutes of actual work, and the rest of her shift she reads over old cold cases. One in particular fascinates her: the mysterious deaths of three young brothers murdered on Deck River, followed by the suicide of Mitchell Wright, the prime suspect in the murders. Arlene becomes obsessed with the case, and with the help of the police department's receptionist and a family friend of the Wrights, she sets out on discovering the truth. She can't help but feel that if she solves the case of the Broderick boys' deaths, she'll find her footing in her young marriage and maybe find what she's been looking for all along. From the author of The Floating Girls, a finalist for the Townsend Prize for Fiction and a Reader's Digest Editor's Pick, Lo Patrick has once again crafted a story bursting with charm, heartbreak, and memorable characters that leap off the page, a true delight for fans of Southern fiction.

Book excerpt: "A masterly achievement." – Publishers Weekly STARRED review "Many readers are looking for the next Where the Crawdads Sing, and will find The Floating Girls...is a close cousin." – Augusta Chronicle Fierce 12-year-old Kay can't ignore the problems surfacing in her troubled home—or the mysterious marsh outside. It will take all of her courage and perseverance to survive her family drama as their dark secrets come to life in the wake of a small-town murder. One hot, sticky summer in Bledsoe, Georgia, twelve-year-old Kay Whitaker stumbles across a stilt house in a neighboring marsh and upon Andy Webber, a boy about her age. He and his father have recently moved back to Georgia from California, and rumors of the suspicious drowning death of Andy's mother years earlier have chased them there and back. Kay is fascinated and enamored with Andy, and she doesn't listen when her father tells her to stay away from the Webbers. But when Kay's sister goes missing, the mystery of Mrs. Webber's death—and Kay's parents' potential role in it—comes to light. Kay and her brothers must navigate the layers of secrets that emerge in the course of the investigation as their family, and the world as they knew it, unravels around them. At once wickedly funny and heartbreaking, perfect for fans of Kim Michele Richardson, The Floating Girls is a stunning southern mystery, a wonderfully atmospheric coming-of-age family drama told from the perspective of a fierce 12-year-old marsh girl—reminiscent of a modern-day Scout Finch—as she unravels the secrets that threaten her entire family. Praise for The Floating Girls: "A powerhouse of a Southern novel. At once a poignant coming-of-age tale, a murder mystery, and an evocative tribute to the marshlands of Georgia. Lo Patrick is a standout new Southern voice." —Andrea Bobotis, author of The Last List of Miss Judith Kratt "Kay is the smartest, funniest, most curious young narrator I have come across in some time. Her voice stuck with me long after I finished reading. If I met Kay on the street, I'd beg her to be my best friend." —Tiffany Quay Tyson, award-winning author of The Past is Never "A cracking story that unfolds in gorgeous prose in the stultifying heat of the American South." —Hayley Scrivenor, author of Dirt Creek "Fans of Where the Crawdads Sing will love this immersive mystery set against the salty air of Georgia's marshes. In Patrick's atmospheric prose, the water and its characters come to life." —Lindsey Rogers Cook, author of Learning to Speak Southern

Book excerpt: Every now and then, in history, a prolific and sound voice arises. And if ever a rising wave of such a new and inspiring voice would emerge, it might compare in the new American release, premiere novel by writer, Mr. Hopey Whisperwind. Beckoning with oscillations of an enrapturing tale, Mr. Whisperwind brings us to The River Called Silence. In his novel, Whisperwind eloquently spans the centuries of time, in order to weave a hauntingly intriguing story of his native people, the Low-Tow-Pee Indians of the North Carolina Mountains. Spoken in two installments, Book One opens with a prologue, titled, The Prophecy of the Sparrow, a recounting by Mr. Whisperwind of the sacred promise given to the Low-Tow-Pee before his time. Thereafter, in the beginning chapters, Mr. Whisperwind is living and working in New York City as a magazine journalist with his soon to be fiancée. Unannounced, he is called back home, to be amongst his tribe. Upon his return to his hometown of Cool Ridge, North Carolina, he is summoned to reawaken the fire of healing hands that was upon him as a child, in order to heal his ailing Grandmother, Lily Whisperwind. However, on this occasion, his healing, which the Low-Tow-Pee calls the Fever, is unable to cure her. His Grandmother passes away through the night. The next day, to Mr. Whisperwind's and his tribe's surprise, his Grandmother's Will states that Whisperwind is to inherit all of her belongings, the 100 year old home and her tattered journal within it. So then, the true journey begins as Mr. Whisperwind encounters the pages of her writings that speak of old walking spirits, a young love that blooms within a wondrous hidden world of heavenly things, and the praying hearts of a prophecy fulfilled. A well defined, timeless masterpiece at the heart of what makes every human human; The River Called Silence faithfully reaches out to its readers with a prolific and sound voice. Tweren't for love where, O' where would I be? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Cry of Murder on Broadway, Julie Miller shows how a woman's desperate attempt at murder came to momentarily embody the anger and anxiety felt by many people at a time of economic and social upheaval and expanding expectations for equal rights. On the evening of November 1, 1843, a young household servant named Amelia Norman attacked Henry Ballard, a prosperous merchant, on the steps of the new and luxurious Astor House Hotel. Agitated and distraught, Norman had followed Ballard down Broadway before confronting him at the door to the hotel. Taking out a folding knife, she stabbed him, just missing his heart. Ballard survived the attack, and the trial that followed created a sensation. Newspapers in New York and beyond followed the case eagerly, and crowds filled the courtroom every day. The prominent author and abolitionist Lydia Maria Child championed Norman and later included her story in her fiction and her writing on women's rights. The would-be murderer also attracted the support of politicians, journalists, and legal and moral reformers who saw her story as a vehicle to change the law as it related to "seduction" and to advocate for the rights of workers. Cry of Murder on Broadway describes how New Yorkers, besotted with the drama of the courtroom and the lurid stories of the penny press, followed the trial for entertainment. Throughout all this, Norman gained the sympathy of New Yorkers, in particular the jury, which acquitted her in less than ten minutes. Miller deftly weaves together Norman's story to show how, in one violent moment, she expressed all the anger that the women of the emerging movement for women's rights would soon express in words.
