Book excerpt: The professional theatre company of Hubert Ogunde has been in existence in Nigeria for over 30 years. In this well documented study of the highly popular and innovative theatrical group, Ebun Clark describes its formation and development from both the historical and theatrical points of view, with particular emphasis on Ogunde's relation to the nationalist movement of the 1940s as well as his various encounters with the colonial authorities who tried to ban his performances. This study by one of the country's foremost theatre scholars provides a valuable introduction to the understanding of the influences that have shaped the Nigerian theatre today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lively and varied tribute to Martin Banham, Layiwola has assembled critical commentaries and two plays which focus primarily on Nigerian theatre - both traditional and contemporary. Dele Layiwola, Dapo Adelugba and Sonny Oti trace the beginnings of the School of Drama in 1960, at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, where Martin Banham played a key and influential role in the growth of thriving Nigerian theatre repetoire and simulaneously encouraging the creation of a new theatre based on traditional Nigerian theatre forms. This comparative approach is taken up in Dele Layiwola's study of ritual and drama in the context of various traditions worldwide, while Oyin Ogunba presents a lucid picture of the complex use of theatre space in Yoruba ritual dramadar drama. Harsh everyday realitites, both physical and political, are graphically demonstrated by Robert McClaren (Zimbabwe) and Oga Steve Abah (Nigeria) who both show surprising and alarming links between extreme actual experiences and theatre creation and performance. The texts of the two plays - When Criminals Turn Judges by Ola Rotimi, The Hand that Feeds the King by Wale Ogunyemi, are followed by Austin O. Asagba's study of oral tradition and text in plays by Osofisan and Agbeyegbe, and Frances Harding's study on power, language, and imagery in Wole Soyinka's plays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitherto, industry participants and professionals have had to navigate the emerging and complex Nigerian electricity supply industry (the power sector) without materials or texts that adequately and comprehensively address the history and policy issues, as well as the legal and regulatory frameworks of the industry. In particular, before this book, there was no book written from a practical and hands-on perspective on the key issues connected with the Nigerian power sector or Nigerian power projects generally; neither was there a book that provided good and practical insights on matters related to the negotiation of power sector transaction documents in Nigeria. The few available texts covered only limited aspects of the power sector as none covered multiple key issues. This 400 page book consisting of 10 chapters, attempts to fill the lacuna. It reviews the general legal and regulatory regime of the power sector. It also takes a comprehensive look at the power sector from a historical dimension and looks at where Nigeria is, in terms of the legal and regulatory regime, and the direction in which the country may be headed. Of particular interest to power sector professionals and other persons who negotiate contracts in the power sector or contracts related to the development of power projects, is the chapter which serves as a guide on negotiating key power sector contracts, such as Power Purchase Agreements, Gas Supply Agreements and Engineering, Procurement and Construction Contracts. Noteworthy, is the fact that the book contains contributions from internationally recognized energy law and policy experts like Stella Duru of Banwo & Ighodalo, Jason Kerr of White & Case, Arun Velusami of Norton Rose and Akshai Fofaria of Pinsent Masons. Further, the book considers other issues in the power sector, such as the Partial Risk Guarantee, which backstops the Federal Government of Nigerias payment obligations to power generation companies; and pricing issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ireland, north and south of the border, has witnessed volatile patterns of immigration in the past decade, and stage representations of these fluctuations have begun to emerge. In the Republic, immigration has coincided with, and it has been encouraged by the economic boom known as Celtic Tiger. In the North, the peace process and the easing off of the political tension has contributed to making the region more appealing and hospitable for newcomers. The media have played a significant role in this respect as they have helped re-launch the local tourist industry on the international scene, and consequently to attract both short- and long-term visitors. That Ireland has become the land of opportunities for thousands of people is a phenomenon which scholars from different academic backgrounds have been trying to explain given that mass immigration has had, and continues to have, a big impact on the local economy, social welfare and culture. This volume is dedicated to this final aspect. It investigates how migration has shaped and is reflected in Irish culture today; more specifically, it focuses on the representation of outsiders in Irish theatre and to the way in which theatre practitioners have dealt and engaged with debates of national and cultural identities, hybridity, multiculturalism and racism in post-nationalist Ireland up to 2008 – that is prior to the economic crisis that has swept the whole continent of Europe and the US over the past two years. Although multiculturalism has become an almost jaded theme in academia, much of the material presented here is fresh, original and highly relevant. Some plays are relatively unknown, and many of the texts remain unpublished. They have been staged on a small number of occasions, yet the topics they explore are central, not just to Irish society, but to any community in a global context that hosts immigrants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to offer a broad history of theatre in Africa. The roots of African theatre are ancient and complex and lie in areas of community festival, seasonal rhythm and religious ritual, as well as in the work of popular entertainers and storytellers. Since the 1950s, in a movement that has paralleled the political emancipation of so much of the continent, there has also grown a theatre that comments back from the colonized world to the world of the colonists and explores its own cultural, political and linguistic identity. A History of Theatre in Africa offers a comprehensive, yet accessible, account of this long and varied chronicle, written by a team of scholars in the field. Chapters include an examination of the concepts of 'history' and 'theatre'; North Africa; Francophone theatre; Anglophone West Africa; East Africa; Southern Africa; Lusophone African theatre; Mauritius and Reunion; and the African diaspora.
