Book excerpt: First-generation college students (FGCS) do not have primary caregivers with a bachelor's degree. This identity contributes above and beyond other background factors in predicting outcomes (Gibbons & Borders, 2010). This study aimed to identify specific supports and barriers that affect the career decision process for this population and add to the dearth of research in this area. Social Cognitive Career Theory (Lent et al., 1994), which accounts for contextual factors, was used as a lens in the current study. Population-relevant supports and barriers such as social status, experiences with classism, parental support, and role model influence were identified as especially relevant for the career development process of first-generation college students (Gibbons & Borders, 2010; Lent et al., 2002; Olson, 2014). Coping efficacy was hypothesized as a mediator between the supports and barriers and vocational outcomes (i.e., career decision self-efficacy and career indecision). Data from a national sample of 251 ethnically and socioeconomically diverse FGCS yielded significant correlational findings. Social status was positively correlated with perceived parental support, supportive role model influence, and career decision self-efficacy and negatively correlated with experiences with classism and career indecision. Experiences with classism were negatively related with career decision self-efficacy and positively correlated with career indecision. Perceived parental support and supportive role model influence were both positively correlated with career decision self-efficacy, however, they lacked significant relationships with career indecision. A path analysis revealed that the hypothesized model was not supported by the data. Exploratory analyses guided by theory, however, yielded a model that was a good fit for the data. Significant indirect effects were found within the best fitting model, with social status and coping efficacy serving as full mediators in the relationship between supports and barriers (i.e., experiences with classism, supportive role model influence, perceived parental support) and vocational outcomes (i.e., career decision self-efficacy, career indecision). Results added to the discussion on the placement of social status, supports, and barriers within the SCCT model. Findings also contributed by identifying points of intervention within educational and clinical contexts that could be used to promote the career development process of first-generation college students.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between sense of coherence, demographic characteristics, and career thought processes among college students with disabilities based on Antonovsky's conceptual framework of sense of coherence. Participants were college students with disabilities collected through the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (rcpd) at Michigan State University and other universities and colleges via a listserv of the Michigan Association on Higher Education and Disabilities (mi-ahead). Pearson Correlation Coefficient and forward stepwise regression analyses were carried out in order to find out the relationship between sense of coherence, demographic characteristics (E.G., gender, race, and socioeconomic status), and career thought processes. Results supported that college students with disabilities who showed higher sense of coherence indicated less overall dysfunctional career thoughts, career decision-making confusion, or career-related anxiety. In addition, the relationships between sense of coherence, career thoughts, and the demographic characteristics have been found. Implications for career development professionals as well as clinical considerations of caring for college students with disabilities experiencing career-related difficulties were discussed. Book excerpt: American higher education is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse and researchers have suggested that more attention should be given to better understanding the career development of college students of color. Although there is substantial research on career development and the career decision-making process, studies have overwhelmingly primarily used data collected from White participants. Thus, little research has been done on the career development of people of color and specifically, college students of color. The primary focus of this study was to explore relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and racial identity attitudes of college students of color. In addition, the study explored relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and various demographic and life experience variables.^A sample of 164 college students of color attending five institutions of higher education in the Western New York area was used for this study. A survey packet consisting of four separate self-report instruments was completed by each participant. This study employed a multiple correlation and regression survey research design which was used to examine relationships between variables. This study generated a number of important findings. First, strong relationships where found between career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes for this sample. Second, career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes were related both positively and negatively, depending upon participants' current racial identity status, to participants' racial identity attitudes.^Third, participants' age, year in college, academic major, mother's educational level, and family income were predictors of their confidence in their ability to make a career choice that would meet their preferred lifestyle. Lastly, none of the remaining demographic variables were related to either career development construct. This study also explored the implications of the findings on career counseling with students of color, student affairs and academic advising practice, and higher education policy. Overall, this study provides new and relevant information regarding the career and racial identity development of college students of color, a very limited body of scholarly literature.

In summary, the Self-Directed Search was used to obtain the Holland-personality-types of the participants. Each participant's Holland-environment-code was derived from her college major. The participants' Holland-personality-code and the Holland-environment-code were then used to define individuals (using a first-letter or C-index definition) as congruent or incongruent. Three MANOVAs were conducted with race and congruence as independent variables, and the scales of the Reiss Profile of Fundamental Goals and Motivation Sensitivities as dependent variables. Three ANOVAs were also used to compare African American and European American female college students, as well as congruent and incongruent groups, on total career decision-making self-efficacy (as measured by the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy scale-Short Form). In addition, two exploratory MANOVA analyses were conducted to investigate the relationship between the independent variables of race and career decision-making self-efficacy, and the dependent variables of fundamental goals/motivation sensitivities on the Reiss. In general, African American and European American, female college students were found to differ on some of the Reiss scales, while congruent and incongruent individuals did not tend to differ. Results were generally similar, regardless of whether the first-letter or C-index was used to define congruence. Also, African American and European American female college students, as well as congruent and incongruent groups, did not differ in their levels of career decision-making self-efficacy. Finally, Career decision-making self-efficacy was associated with differences in expressed needs/desires and life goals as measured by the Reiss. Results generally suggest that factors such as race and self-efficacy, may impact the fundamental goals/motivation sensitivities expressed by these college students.

Participants in the ex-post facto cross-sectional survey included 787 full and part-time students at the community college. There were three research questions: (1) Are there differences in mean scores of CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs by demographic characteristics (gender, ethnicity, age, first-generational, employment, full and part-time student status)? (2) What is the predictive value of these demographic variables on CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? (3) Is there a relationship between CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? The Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form and Career Barriers Inventory-Revised were administered to participants and data were analyzed using two sample t-tests, ANOVA and multiple regression models. There were significant differences between applied technology and college transfer students in terms of perception of career barriers and career decision-making self-efficacy. The applied technology students, who tended to be older, had higher career decision-making self-efficacy scores than the college transfer students and that did not change across the other demographic variables (gender, etc). Thus, the purpose of this research is to examine the effects of work migration of parents to the career decision making of the children of OFW families. Using descriptive correlational design, the first phase of the research delved on career decision self-efficacy level and its relationship to negative career thoughts. Of the 140 freshman college engineering and information technology students who are children of overseas migrant workers, 25 % were identified to have career indecision. To determine the relationship among the variables, Career decision Self-Efficacy Short Form (CDSE-SF) and Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI) were administered. Findings revealed that there is no relationship between the variables. The second phase of the research made use of descriptive survey method. Factors such as; personal determinants, environmental determinants and situational determinants were identified, and how these factors influence the career decision making of students with OFW parents. Furthermore, the respondents work abroad plans were discussed. Results revealed that influence of parents, family members, peers and teachers are important factors in choosing college major.
