The case was a unique one, inasmuch as it was one where the patient, a young man eighteen years old, had determined to have the teeth extracted and artificial substitutes inserted. I am aware that other modes of treatment might have been used by those who could command a large fee, but as the case was one which I volunteered as an experiment, and for which no reasonable fee was expected, I made choice of two evils - the one I chose having proved to be a blessing in disguise. The first thing you learn reading The Archives of Dentistry, A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art is that the practice of dentistry in the 19th Century is more advanced than one would have assumed. There are research papers on everything from the science of tooth decay, to the types of cement, to proper hygiene practices for patients. Case studies are presented throughout. Some cases seem roughly equivalent to how dental problems would be handled today, but in other instances the advice reads like horror or science fiction. For example, the professionals debate about whether teeth could be transplanted from one person to another. There is also a description of the uses of cocaine as anesthetic for operations, with the conclusion that it makes surgery completely painless. Minutes from local meetings of dental societies are also presented. For example, at the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Connecticut Valley Dental Society, the dentists share lectures on crown and bridgework before engaging in a round-table about specific case studies. These are great learning opportunities for readers, regardless of whether they are dental practitioners. Cultural stereotypes of the time surface, such as when a dentist says that when fillings were performed on the canine teeth of "the negro," the teeth were guaranteed to fail within three years. Strange ideas are presented, like the alleged relationship between abscessed teeth and the condition of the bowels. There are advertisements for things like tin foil, tooth powder, and Listerine sprinkled throughout the Archive. These observations, case studies and advertisements alone compel me to recommend The Archives of Dentistry, A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art for a general audience, not just those interested in the dental profession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ohio Dental Journal, 1895, Vol. 15 The entire credit of continuous gum work lies in two points: first, in taking it out at the proper temperature maintain an adaptation of the platinum, and the compensation for the effect the shrinkage would have on the palate in hard points upon which there was any shrinkage the adaptation must be altered a little bit. This can be done judiciously and without injury to the plate. Aside from this trouble and the trouble of repairing, that is, with the old furnace and the labor connected with making the fire, continuous gum work is a more certain work than any other that we have. It is certainly the highest type of mechanical den ture. It is more cleanly and it is durable. The tissues retain their health and the ridge retains its form under a platinum denture longer than any other plate. With the furnace Dr. Custer has introduced to this society, repair ing would be a matter of no consideration whatever. If a plate hap pened to fall and something broken off it can be easily restored. From the fact that there is no gas about it, there is no danger of free gas attacking the body. There need be no apprehension of that. I think the introduction of this into the laboratory of the dentist will revolution ize that department. It decreases the trouble arising from accidents if you break a tooth it does not have to go through the big coke furnace when you haven't time for it and don't get paid for it, for you can do it without loss of time. I think it is one of the grandest achievements that has been made in the profession recently, aud I think Dr. Custer deserves a great deal of credit for having solved this problem.
