Book Synopsis Reason, Reality, and Speculative Philosophy by : Arthur Edward Murphy
Download or read book Reason, Reality, and Speculative Philosophy written by Arthur Edward Murphy and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though one of the best known and most highly regarded philosophers of his day, Arthur E. Murphy left few books behind, least of all the "big book" he alluded to throughout his life but, for reasons unknown, never published. Reason, Reality, and Speculative Philosophy is derived from that book manuscript, so famous and yet so unknown, and offers at last a clear and definitive statement of Murphy's view of the place and purpose of philosophy. Most of all, this book introduces readers to a genuine lover of wisdom, a philosopher who used ordinary English to address traditional problems of philosophy. Murphy gives a critical account of speculative philosophy and, at the same time, offers a constructive attempt to outline a philosophy true to both reason and reality. In the process, he examines the speculative philosophies of F. H. Bradley, C. S. Peirce, Bertrand Russell, George Santayana, and A. N. Whitehead, among others, and dissects various forms of realism and idealism. His work thus provides a trenchant critique of the major philosophical tendencies of the period from 1890 to 1940. This long-lost work, recovered and edited with expert care by Marcus G. Singer, is a contribution to philosophic reason that is penetrating, comprehensive, witty, and wise.
Book Synopsis Manifesto of New Realism by : Maurizio Ferraris
Download or read book Manifesto of New Realism written by Maurizio Ferraris and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical realism has taken a number of different forms, each applied to different topics and set against different forms of idealism and subjectivism. Maurizio Ferraris's Manifesto of New Realism takes aim at postmodernism and hermeneutics, arguing against their emphasis on reality as constructed and interpreted. While acknowledging the value of these criticisms of traditional, dogmatic realism, Ferraris insists that the insights of postmodernism have reached a dead end. Calling for the discipline to turn its focus back to truth and the external world, Ferraris's manifesto—which sparked lively debate in Italy and beyond—offers a wiser realism with social and political relevance.

Book Synopsis Positive Realism by : Maurizio Ferraris
Download or read book Positive Realism written by Maurizio Ferraris and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positive Realism could be seen as the "sequel" to Maurizio Ferraris' Manifesto of New Realism and Introduction to New Realism. The focus here is the other side of unamendability: a notion, described in his previous books, according to which reality is "unamendable", it cannot be corrected at will. This "resistance" of the real is what ultimately tells us that, in opposition to the claims of post-Kantian philosophy, the world is not a result of our conceptual work: if it were so, our power over reality would be much greater. Now, the often disappointing limits that the real sets against our expectations are also a resource: and this is the key point of the present book. Things exist, and therefore undoubtedly resist us, but in doing so they offer affordances, resources, opportunities. And that the greatest opportunity, which underlies all the other ones, is the fact that we share a world that is far from liquid: on the contrary, it provides the solid ground on which everything rests, starting from our happiness or unhappiness.
Book Synopsis Santayana the Philosopher by : Daniel Moreno
Download or read book Santayana the Philosopher written by Daniel Moreno and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regarding Santayana it has been claimed that he lacks a system while contradicting himself in outrageous ways. An attentive analysis of his complete œuvre, however, reveals something else entirely. It is not easy to classify a thinker as a Platonic materialist, an ironic nihilist, a spiritual atheist, and a conservative without political commitment, but, if one respects his own language, one discerns an astonishing, little-known Santayana, whose philosophical leitmotif consists in: 1) detecting the numerous “false steps,” logical and moral, supplied by the imagination when it confuses things with the names that designate them, or the world with the feelings that it provokes in the human animal—these errors assume diverse faces: pantheism, moralism, egotism, subjectivism, transcendentalism, Platonism, Puritanism, and utopianism; 2) avoiding these illusions in such a way as to keep the spiritual door open as a form of life to be lived out in an honest fashion; 3) recognizing the natural origin of these temptations and asking oneself what moves humans to succumb imperceptibly to these mistakes, at times tragic, at others comical, and what precautions one can take to remain cognizant of the deceitful leaps that can hijack one’s life; and 4) proposing as an alternative the radical distinction between essence and existence, which leads him to distinguish four realms of being: the realm of essence, the realm of matter, the realm of truth, and the realm of spirit. Essence as logical identity, matter as contingent existence, truth as frozen history, and spirit as the flames that part from contingency and approximate the eternal. An attempt has been made in this book to expand on and clarify these questions.
