Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking the 21st Century brings much needed context and perspective to the security problems we face today. In recent years, the 'Bush Doctrine' - that the security threats we now face are entirely unprecedented - has echoed around the world. Global security and stability is now challenged not only by states and nuclear war, but by insurgency, disease, environmental degradation and military privatisation. Yet this creates a deep sense of disconnect in the way we perceive politics, and can be dangerously stark and ahistorical. The chapters here show that, far from being a clean break, the 'new' problems faced today might actually have 'old' solutions. What can Locke tell us about terrorists? What does Bentham have to say about sanctions? What are the ethics of outsourcing war to private companies? By looking back to decades and even centuries of ethical analysis and political theory, this book provides fascinating insight into all these questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is fascism in the twenty first century? What does Fascism mean at the beginning of the twenty-first century? When we pronounce this word, our memory goes back to the years between the two world wars and envisions a dark landscape of violence, dictatorships, and genocide. These images spontaneously surface in the face of the rise of radical right, racism, xenophobia, islamophobia and terrorism, the last of which is often depicted as a form of "Islamic fascism." Beyond some superficial analogies, however, all these contemporary tendencies reveal many differences from historical fascism, probably greater than their affinities. Paradoxically, the fear of terrorism nourishes the populist and racist rights, with Marine Le Pen in France or Donald Trump in the US claiming to be the most effective ramparts against "Jihadist fascism". But since fascism was a product of imperialism, can we define as fascist a terrorist movement whose main target is Western domination? Disentangling these contradictory threads, Enzo Traverso's historical gaze helps to decipher the enigmas of the present. He suggests the concept of post-fascism--a hybrid phenomenon, neither the reproduction of old fascism nor something completely different--to define a set of heterogeneous and transitional movements, suspended between an accomplished past still haunting our memories and an unknown future.

Book excerpt: The Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) model of leadership has shown that effective leader-follower relationships predict employee well-being and performance. Less research, however, addressed how diversity variables may affect the development of leader-member exchange and outcomes. This book moves the field forward by addressing the 21st century challenges of how diversity may impact the development of effective working relationships. Key trends in the workforce suggest that the impact of diverse employees will challenge a leader’s ability to develop effective working relationships with all direct reports. New frameworks are needed to understand how various groups such as women, Hispanics, African Americans, Millennials, LGBTQ, and persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder develop effective working relationships with their supervisors This edited volume will bring together the top scholars in the field to address these segments of the workforce and offer practical advice for managers. This book will be used in college undergraduate and/or graduate level leadership classes. It might also be adopted for courses in managing diversity. Scholars will find the book a useful reference work. In addition, practicing managers will be interested in the implications of developing effective working relationships in diverse leader-member dyads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it that makes certain organizations more successful? Organization design and its management has long been the fixation of leaders and scholars alike. Cracking the code to the perfect organizational ecosystem appears to be the dividing line between great success and mediocrity. The 21st century launched with great volatility and a level of cultural and global diversity unknown by previous generations. This instability demands new approaches and methods for the delivery of products, services and ideas. We can no longer afford to run organizations with 19th and 20th century ideas. The pressures of shifting demographics, culture and technology require new approaches to organizational leadership and structures. Welcome to the era of the Open Organization. The Open Organization: A New Era of Leadership and Organizational Development, by Dr Philip A Foster, is divided into three distinct parts; the first explores the foundations of an Open Organization, covering the evolution of leadership and organization theories from the beginning of known time through to the 21st century; the second discusses the elements of such an organization, presenting the ecosystem of an Open System with its structure, culture and decision-making functions, while the third examines the 21st century organization, questioning 'who should go Open' and reviewing the reality of creating this type of organization, understanding control and resistance and addressing the matter of bringing about change.
