Book excerpt: I say the Catholic "conscience" of history--I say "conscience"--that is, an intimate knowledge through identity: the intuition of a thing which is one with the knower--I do not say "The Catholic Aspect of History." This talk of "aspects" is modern and therefore part of a decline: it is false, and therefore ephemeral: I will not stoop to it.

Book excerpt: 'The sheer range of West's interests and insights is staggering and exemplary: he appears equally comfortable talking about literature, ethics, art, jurisprudence, religion, and popular-cultural forms.' - Artforum Keeping Faith is a rich, moving and deeply personal collection of essays from one of the leading African American intellectuals of our age. Drawing upon the traditions of Western philosophy and modernity, Cornel West critiques structures of power and oppression as they operate within American society and provides a way of thinking about human dignity and difference afresh. Impressive in its scope, West confidently and deftly explores the politics and philosophy of America, the role of the black intellectual, legal theory and the future of liberal thought, and the fate of African Americans. A celebration of the extraordinary lives of ordinary Americans, Keeping Faith is a petition to hope and a call to faith in the redemptive power of the human spirit.

Book Synopsis Lange’s Commentary of the Holy Scriptures by : Johann Peter Lange
Download or read book Lange’s Commentary of the Holy Scriptures written by Johann Peter Lange and published by Christian Classics Reproductions. This book was released on 2024-08-28 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original 63 volumes set are now reduced to 9 volumes. We have completed volumes 1, 6-9 which are the New Testament. Lord willing during 2023-2024, we will try to complete volumes 2-5 which are the Old Testament. This volume was published between 1867-1874 In contrast to the extreme skeptical-critical mode which came to characterize much of German scholarship in the 19th century, Lange represented a more traditional-conservative (and Evangelical) approach, shared in common with men such as E. W. Hengstenberg. He was also a (Reformed) minister, and the Commentaries reflect this combination of conservative criticism, Evangelical theology, and homiletics, in a way that is unique. For each passage that is covered, a consistent approach is adopted throughout. After giving the text in translation, along with textual notes, (as footnotes), three different kinds of commentary are presented: · EXEGETICAL AND CRITICAL · DOCTRINAL AND ETHICAL · HOMILETICAL AND PRACTICAL This gives you three times the value! For each verse you select, a drop-down box will appear allowing you to choose from each of these areas or kinds of commentary. For detailed analysis, go to the exegetical-critical notes; for sermon ideas and pastoral insights, select the Homiletical notes.
Book Synopsis Systematic Theology (Complete 3 Volumes) by : Augustus Hopkins Strong
Download or read book Systematic Theology (Complete 3 Volumes) written by Augustus Hopkins Strong and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-12-10 with total page 2896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Systematic Theology" in 3 volumes is one of the best-known works by the American Baptist minister and theologian Augustus Hopkins Strong. Excerpt: "Under the influence of Ritschl and his Kantian relativism, many of our teachers and preachers have swung off into a practical denial of Christ's deity and of his atonement. We seem upon the verge of a second Unitarian defection that will break up churches and compel secessions, in a worse manner than did that of Channing and Ware a century ago. American Christianity recovered from that disaster only by vigorously asserting the authority of Christ and the inspiration of the Scriptures. We need a new vision of the Savior like that which Paul saw on the way to Damascus and John saw on the isle of Patmos, to convince us that Jesus is lifted above space and time, that his existence antedated creation, that he conducted the march of Hebrew history, that he was born of a virgin, suffered on the cross, rose from the dead, and now lives forevermore, the Lord of the universe, the only God with whom we have to do, our Savior here and our Judge hereafter. Without a revival of this faith our churches will become secularized, mission enterprise will die out, and the candlestick will be removed out of its place as it was with the seven churches of Asia, and as it has been with the apostate churches of New England." Book Synopsis Ancient-Future Faith by : Robert E. Webber
Download or read book Ancient-Future Faith written by Robert E. Webber and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 1999-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world marked by relativism, individualism, pluralism, and the transition from a modern to a postmodern worldview, evangelical Christians must find ways to re-present the historic faith. In his provocative new work, Ancient-Future Faith, Robert E. Webber contends that present-day evangelicalism is a product of modernity. Allegiance to modernity, he argues, must be relinquished to free evangelicals to become more consistently historic. Empowerment to function in our changing culture will be found by adapting the classical tradition to our postmodern time. Webber demonstrates the implications in the key areas of church, worship, spirituality, evangelism, nurture, and mission. Webber writes, The fundamental concern of Ancient-Future Faith is to find points of contact between classical Christianity and postmodern thought. Classical Christianity was shaped in a pagan and relativistic society much like our own. Classical Christianity was not an accommodation to paganism but an alternative practice of life. Christians in a postmodern world will succeed, not by watering down the faith, but by being a counter cultural community that invites people to be shaped by the story of Israel and Jesus. A substantial appendix explores the development of authority in the early church, an important issue for evangelicals in a society that shares many features with the Roman world of early Christians. Students, professors, pastors, and laypeople concerned with the churchs effective response to a postmodern world will benefit from this paradigmatic volume. Informative tables and extensive bibliographies enhance the books educational value. - Amazon.

This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 33052 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regarded by many as the most comprehensive anthology of all time, ‘The Harvard Classics’ was first published in 1909 under the supervision of the Harvard president Charles W. Eliot. An esteemed academic, Eliot had argued that the elements of a liberal education could be gained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. The publisher P. F. Collier challenged Eliot to make good on this statement and ‘Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf’ was the result. Eight years later Eliot added a further 20 volumes as a sub-collection titled ‘The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction’, offering some of the greatest novels and short stories of world literature. The exhaustive anthology of the ‘The Harvard Classics’ comprises every major literary figure, philosopher, religion, folklore and historical subject up to the twentieth century. Book Synopsis Pedagogy, Printing and Protestantism by : Carmen Luke
Download or read book Pedagogy, Printing and Protestantism written by Carmen Luke and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1989-07-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Foucault's history of discourse, this book examines the relationship between the invention of the printing press and the evolution of concepts regarding childhood and schooling. It is an interdisciplinary study of schooling, childhood, literacy, and protestantism in 16th-century Germany. Luke traces the agenda for the rearing and education of the young as outlined by the Protestant reformers and popularized by the advent of printing. Luther's print-based religious campaign led to his call for universal public schooling to promote literacy — a fundamental requirement of the new theology. Luke identifies the development of an emergent discourse on childhood in the reformer's tracts, school ordinances, personal correspondences, conduct, and household and medical guides. From a Foucauldian archeological perspective, then, Pedogogy, Printing, and Protestantism examines the conditions that enabled the emergence of early modern discourse on childhood.
