Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address Delivered Before the New England Historic-Genealogical Society: At the Annual Meeting Held in Boston, Mass., Jan. 4, 1865 I cannot discuss this subject with anything of the fulness it demands on the present occasion, but must briefly sum up the views that I enter tain, and which I would respectfully and most earnestly urge you, the members of this Society, to propagate and disseminate by every means ln your power, by your voice, by your pen, and through the organ of our Society, The Historical and Genealogical Register. I neither claim to be a statesman nor a politician, nor yet a profound historical scholar but I have thought long and deeply on this subject, and Ido most earnestly believe, that if we can promote a right study of history throughout our country, we shall confer a great, an inestimable bless ing upon her, and we shall be erecting one of the strongest bulwarks for the defence of her free Constitution, and one of the most effective barriers against anarchy on the one hand, or tyranny on the other. Let the study of history, then, ever be based upon, and accompanied by, a solemn recognition of God's moral government of the universe. Secondly, let it be divested of national and personal prejudice and bias: for, the object being to Obtain a true and correct knowledge of facts, every hindrance adverse to truth and fair judgment must of course be set aside. In all disputed matters of History, especially where such a bias is likely to influence us, and to cloud our judgment, let us, as a matter of absolute duty, calmly investigate both sides of the question, hear the arguments on both sides, and, as sworn jury men, abide by the evidence. Again, let us not imagine that History consists merely in the romantic and stirring narrative of battles, sieges, and those great and startling events, the pomp and circumstance of war, which many so-called historians seem to have regarded as the only things worthy of notice. All these things belong to the exter nal life of a nation, and they are not to be neglected; nor is there much fear that they will be, because this external life of nations, as of individuals, is the most attractive, the most easily known, and, to most minds, the most interesting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourse Delivered Before the New-England Historic-Genealogical Society, Boston, April 2, 1868: On the Life and Character of the Hon. John Albion Andrew, LL. D., Late President of the Society, With Proceedings and Appendix We recognized in Gov. Andrew all that is most excellent in the traits usually attributed to New England, blended with a breadth of thought, a largeness of aim, and an absence of every thing like provincial or sectarian prejudice, that raised him to the full height of the American ideal, and will make his name honored wherever the history of our country shall be read, as an illustrious and classic example of the noblest phase of the American character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address Delivered Before the New England Historic-Genealogical Society: At Its Annual Meeting, January 1, 1862 The fire, with well dried logs supplied, 3 Went roaring up the chimney wide l England was merry England, when Old Christmas brought his sports again. T'was Christmas broached the mightiest ale, T'was Christmas told the merriest tale A Christmas gambol oft would cheer A poor man's heart through half the year. - Scott. In accordance then with the good old custom of the New Year's gifts and good wishes, I would fain offer to my brethren of this Society, some thoughts which, although they may present nothing new, and perhaps may appear to some to involve a re-traversing of ground already familiar to all, will yet, I trust, be accepted with a kindly spirit, as an evidence of the deep interest I feel in the progress and success of this Society. Our title naturally suggest-s the course of my remarks, nor may it be altogether unprofitable to examine (much as may have been spoken and written on the subject) what is comprehended in the terms History and Genealogy - what are the higher uses of these sciences, and their relations to each other, and consequently what are the duties to be discharged, and the claims upon general support put forth by a Society, whose especial object it is, to promote the study of these sciences. And, although it may be contrary to the more usual order, which descends from genera to species, or from the whole to its parts, I will, with your permission, glance first at Biography and Genealogy, which are the twin hand maids and helpers of their elder and more stately sister, History. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of the Fathers of New England: Intended to Acquaint Youth With the Lives, Characters and Offerings of Those Who Founded Our Civil and Religious Institutions In comparing our institutions with those of othco portions of the civilized earth, a' reflecting mind is natu rally led to enquire concerning the origin of those insti tutions and the character of their founders. Happily, there are abundant means of satisfying such enquiries. The early history of our country is not involved in fable nor obscurity. The venerable pioneers who considered themselves but as stepping-stones to those who should come after, have left behind them other memorials than the blessed institutions of which their labors and suffer ings, their wisdom, courage, fortitude, piety, and perse verance, laid the foundations. Authentic records, bio graphical and historical, of the little band, self-exiled for conscience sake to the wilds of America, have been handed down for the instruction and admiration of pos terity. Memorials and Journals of transactions and events in New England, in an early period of our nation al infancy, were carefully and faithfully noted down, and with some exceptions, have been carefully preserved and gathered up. To these, the rolling tide of time, while bearing us as a nation onward to power and greatness, gives perpetually increasing value and interest. Some of these accounts, it is the object of this little work, com piled from undoubted authorities, to bring before the ris ing generation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Address on the Late Marshall Pinckney Wilder: President of the New England Historic Genealogical Society St. Paul advised Titus to avoid genealogies, not, however, those of men, but those of the aeons with which in complicated series of mystic generations the Gnostic theosophy had peopled the entire realm between God and man. As to human genealogies, inasmuch as Titus was a Christian pastor, St. Paul, I have no doubt, would have hidden him to study them, and would have told him that they were fully of as much worth to him in making him acquainted with the ock of Cretians under his charge as the pedigree of their Sheep could be to the shepherds on Mount Ida. The diagnosis of his parents and his grandparents is the prognosis, the horoscope of the child. We have many New England surnames which stand this day for traits bodily, mental and moral that belonged to those who bore the same names two hundred or two hundred and fifty years ago. In some cases the traits are intensified in their transmission; in others, where there has been intermarriage with families of strong peculiarities, they are slightly attenuated. In the children of the female members of one of these old families. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
