Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Eclectic Magazine, 1870 T is not difficult to elicit praise of rural life from the tired citizen who escapes from his ordinary duties for a few short dog-days. His surroundings a-re rose - colored by contrast, and he does not abide with Nature long enough to grow weary of her blandish ments. Much of his enjoyment depends upon the sense of present deliverance from routine. The crisp morning air seems to pervade his entire system, revitalising deep-seated organs, restoring lost appetite, and bringing back the experiences of youth. Country milk and butter are dainties fit for the gods, and he wonders why they don't grow in town. The odors which the gentle breeze brings from the clover-neld, or from wild-grape blossoms in the still woods, are marvellously refresh ing 3 and he muses upon the possibility of bottling a supply to refresh his olfactories when he gets back to the bricks. The chirp of birds, the hum of insects, the rustling of leaves, are all novel Opera-airs, and he would like to combine their strange melodies and have them ground out of a town hand - organ. It looks like a shameful waste for Nature to shake out these luxuries in limitless profusion from her storehouses, or to leave them lying about loose where there are so few to appreciate them. These are the first impressions, and they are renewed every summer. He thinks he will certainly cultivate Nature's acquaintance when his accumulations are large enough, and bid farewell to Bills Payable and all kindred commercial horrors. But a longer residence among the flowers and birds reveals certain drawbacks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Eclectic Magazine, 1870, Vol. 6 In short, it is undeniable that of the four elements the air has the best of it now. It has locked the earth and the water up tight, and even the fire cannot hold its own, and affects a very small circle just round about it, and no more. It is not long before rumours go forth that the Serpentine - or, as some will have it, the Circontime - will bear, and away rushes the populace to disport itself upon the broad expanse of its waters, or to stand in safety on the shore, scoffing at the misfortunes of its more venturesome members. Away rushes the populace, and, after them, away rushes the Eye-witness, to take note of the predominant characteristics of the scene. Peppermint and oranges are the predominant characteristics - hot, fiery, appetite-destroying peppermint, and cold, pale, grief-engendering oranges. It is impossible to stir five paces without coming in contact with a tray full of peppermint drops, or a basket lined with blue paper to set off its cargo of oranges. There is evidently a reaction of the stomach contemplated in this provision. The orange, which is hideously unripe and cold, produces such internal anguish that the consumer of it rushes off for peppermint to allay his torment; while the heated diaphragm of the peppermint eater calls loudly within him for the ever near orange. Nay, in some cases there are to be found humane men who sell the bane and antidote together, having a division in their baskets with oranges on one side and peppermint drops on the other. These two articles of consumption having it all their own way, it follows that the vendor of three-cornered tarts with a dab of jam couchant, in a field of pale paste, must come off second best; while the purveyors of gingerbread, roasted chestnuts, oily Brazil nuts, and even of hot elder wine, are left nowhere in the race. Not so the merchants of walking-sticks; there is a brisk demand for them, a walking-stick being much affected by your inexperienced skater. Indeed, such a supplementary prop is a serviceable thing, and, whether planted on the ice to support the beginner - in which case it always slips away from him - or flourished wildly in the air to the detriment of the eyes of other skaters, is a graceful and convenient appendage. The man who has brought what looks like an engine of torture, but which is really an instrument for ascertaining the height, weight, and strength of those who may be anxious for information on those subjects, has made a sad mistake. What could he hope for, but the neglect with which he is treated? Did he think that skaters who had measured their length on the ice would come and test the truth of their estimate afterwards, or that persons of corpulent proportions would wish to ascertain whether they were too heavy to venture on the ice? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Eclectic Magazine, Vol. 4: January-June, 1869 Dames. It was of no use, she was under two, and the conducteur turned to the theological student, still reading his breviary. At least, Monsieur, you will not affirm a story so monstrous, so incredible. The seminarist half-raised his eye-lids, bowed in a manner quite sacro sanct, and replied, I know the child, and she is under two Well, affirmed the conducteur, with some slight temper, if you get that child through the barrier without a ticket, I'll eat her, and disappeared. The women seemed frightened -having, we suspect, received the fare from their mistress - and we anticipated a scene; but we had under rated French ingenuity. Fan must play baby, said the nurse, and Fan was obviously delighted. In a minute or two she was stripped, clad in a nightgown or chemise of some sort, a handkerchief folded over her head, her hair combed back, and she herself transformed into a baby in long clothes. No human being could have detected the de ception, unless he had noticed that the nurse stooped with her weight. The little imp shut her eyes and did ingenue as if she had been bred to the stage, and as a baby in arms she was successfully carried into Paris, the seminarist leading the way through the wicket, book in hand and eyes on the floor. The women who played that trick, nevertheless watched over that child as none but the best English servants would have done, would have thought nothing of losing their own dinners to gratify any whims she might express at table. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Eclectic Magazine, Vol. 5: July December, 1869 Doves know very little of evil. They are not in the way of learning it and they do not care to learn it. The few villagers who are sup posed to lead ill lives are spoken of below the breath, and carefully avoided without being critically studied. When the railway is carried down past their quiet nest, there is an immense excitement as the report goes that a knot of strange men have been seen scattering themselves over the fields with their little white ags and theodolites, their measuring lines and levels. But when the army of navvies fol lows after, the excitement is changed to consternation, and a general sense of evil brooding ruthlessly over them. The clergy of the district organize special services, and the scared doves keep religiously away from the place where the navvies are hutted. They are little better than the savages, the deputation tell them about once or twice a year, and create almost as much terror as an encampment of gipsies. They represent the lawless forces of the world, and the unknown evil of strong men; and the wildest story about them is not too wild to be believed. The railway altogether is a great offence to the neighbour hood, and the line is assumed to destroy the whole sc'enic beauty of the place. There are lamentations over the cockneys it will bring down, over the high prices it will create, the immorality it will cause. Only the sons who are out in the world, and have learnt how life goes on outside the dovecot, advocate keeping pace with the times 5 and a few of the more strong-minded of the doves listen to them with a timid admiration of their breadth and boldness, and think there may be two sides to the question after all. When the dashing captain and his fast wife suddenly appear in the village as often happens in these remote districts - the doves are in a state of great moral complexity. They are scandalized at Mrs. Highfiyer's costume and complexion, and think4 Dovecots. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art, Vol. 12: July to December, 1870 But the nation as a whole was not yet prepared for such a revolution, be cause to them the Bible was an unknown book. Wycliffe determined to remedy this evil by giving them the Bible in their own language. He began his work at Oxford in 1356, by translating the book of Revelation, to which he added a brief Commentary. Several copies of it are extant in manuscript, and exhibit remarkable variations both in text and commentary, as if there had been a series of thorough revisions.* It was followed after an interval by a version of the Gospels, with an exposition, made up chie y of extracts from the exegetical writings of the Fathers. In 1375 Wycliffe was presented to the living of Lutterworth, in Leicestershire. There, in the old parish church of St. Mary, which still stands, he preached with faithfulness and power the funda mental doctrines of Christianity. A single sentence from one of his sermons will show his views regarding both Church and State at that period All truth is contained in Scripture. We should admit of no conclusion not ap proved there. There is no court besides the court of heaven. Though there were an hundred Popes, and though all the friars in the world were turned into Cardinals, yet we could learn more from the Bible than from that vast multitude. In his quiet parish he labored incessantly at the translation of the Scriptures. He completed the New Testament in 1380. The version was not perfect. It was made from the Latin Vulgate yet it set forth substantially the fundamental doc trines of Revelation. The printing-press was then unknown. Every copy had to be written by hand. Wycliffe appears to have employed a number of scribes, but they were not able to supply the grow ing demand. Foxe tells us that some of the yeomen were so anxious to obtain the Word of God, that they often gave a load of bay for a few chapters of St. James or St. Paul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art, Vol. 11: January to June, 1870 Three civilizations, occurring in the three families into which mankind is usually divided, have now been exhibit 'ed, two of them with some detail, at dates anterior to that which the popular chronology has fixed for the commence ment of the peopling of the world. These civilizations were high compared with the state of human tribes yet on the earth. The people were agricultu rists, and well practised in the common arts of life. They had a variety of do mesticated animals; indeed, but few animals have within the historical period been added to the list. They clothed themselves with a variety of fabrics, dwelt in houses and in towns, protecting the latter by fortifications; they had speculated on the order of the spiritual world, and evolved religions; on the order of the material world, and evolv ed bodies of doctrine, which we should call sciences. They differed from one another in language, religion, physical characters, and social arrangements; but in this they agreed, that they had left a state of barbarism far in the rear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine: Foreign Literature, Science, and Art; January to April, 1854 But it is not of the peliod in which she lived that we think first or most naturally when we hear the name of Madame de Stael: it is of the writer whose wondrous genius and glowing eloquence held captive our souls in the season of susceptive yon th, - of the author of the Lettres sur Rousseau, who sanctioned and justified our partiality for that fascinating rhapsodist, - of l'allemagne, from whose pages we first imbibed a longing to make the riches of that mighty literature onr own, - of Corinne, over whose woes and sorrows so many eyes have wept delicious tears; of that dazzling admixture of deep thought, tender sentiment, and brilliant fancy, which give to her writings a charm possessed by the productions of no other woman - and in truth, of but few men. We are not surprised at the attraction which such a subject as the Life and Times of such a woman must have had fora youth ful authoress, which Miss Norris evidently is. We wish we could say that she had proved equal to the task of delineating so stirring an epoch and so rare a character. The faults and defects of the work, however, are those of youth and inexperience. There is a want of grasp; an apparent poverty of materials; an almost entire absence of all reference to the sources from which she has derived herinformation; an imperfect power of appreciatini the political characters of whom she spea s; and a proneness - a ainet which youthful writers should especia Iy be on their guard - to indulge in trite and need less reflections, some of which are absolutely puerile, and one or two not only superficial but unsound. Instances to justify our criti cism may be found at pp. 152, 157, 245, 276. But, on the whole, the tone of the work is agreeable, the sentiments are generally just, and the admiration for Madame de Stael which pervades every page is such as we can heartily sympathize with. We trust, there fore, that the authoress will take our criticism in good part, and consider it as intended, not to discourage, but to warn and aid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art, Vol. 25: January to April 1852 The splendid success of the Religio Med ici most likely took Browne by surprise. Though possessed of a modest sense of his own ability and a respectable independence of spirit, he was far above the arrogance of vanity. It may be believed that most writers who eventually attained great popularity, although they might have some instinctive consciousness of the power within them, were yet unable to guess exactly how, or when, it would receive a public recognition. They just let their inspiration have its utter ance. Nor (in many cases at least) could they subsequently tell with precision what it was in their writings which had fastened on them so universal a sympathy. The bond of attachment between an author and his reader may be too subtle for analysis. Perhaps, granting even a superabundance of genius, with all the acquired skill of practice. Book excerpt: Albert Taylor Bledsoe (1809 -1877), a principle architect of the South's "Lost Cause" mythology, remains one of the Civil War generation's leading and most controversial intellectuals. In "Albert Taylor Bledsoe: Defender of the Old South and Architect of the Lost Cause" Terry A. Barnhart sheds new light on this provocative figure, his diverse interests, and his divisive ideas. This biography, e first ever published of its subject, skillfully weaves Bledsoe's multifarious and extraordinary life history into a narrative that illustrates the events that shaped his opinions and influenced his writings. Barnhart's account demonstrates how Bledsoe still speaks directly, and sometimes eloquently, to the core issues that divided the nation in the 1860s and continue to haunt it today.
