Revolutionary new science is providing cures that were considered science fiction just a few years ago—and not with pills, surgery, or radiation, but with human cells. Promising treatments now in extensive clinical trials could have dramatic impacts on cancer, autoimmune diseases, organ replacement, heart disease, and even aging itself. The key to these breakthroughs is the use of living cells as medicine instead of traditional drugs. Discover the advances that are alleviating the effects of strokes, Alzheimer's disease, and even allergies. Cells Are the New Cure takes you into the world of regenerative medicine, which enables doctors to repair injured and aging tissues and even create artificial body parts and organs in the lab. Cellular medicine experts Robin L. Smith, MD, and Max Gomez, PhD, outline the new technologies that make it possible to harness the immune system to fight cancer and reverse autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. CRISPR, a new technology for targeted gene editing, promises to eradicate genetic diseases, allowing us to live longer lives—possibly even beyond age 100 in good health. Cells Are the New Cure takes you on a tour of the most exciting and cutting-edge developments in medicine. The content inside these pages could save your life or the life of someone you love.

This book was released on 2024-10-24 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colorectal disorders have come to the forefront of modern endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery due to the significant incidence rates and effects on patient quality of life (QoL). Heralded by the rising diagnosis rates of early-onset colorectal cancer, surgical techniques on resection, lymph node harvesting, and bowel anastomosis have been rapidly advancing, in parallel to more minimally invasive approaches such as stenting, tattooing and endoscopic resection. While the role of the colorectal specialist surgeon is central in treating benign and malignant colorectal disease, we must further study the role of novel biomarkers, tumor genomics and proteomics, as well as the use of less invasive methods with regards to the prognosis and outcomes of such patients.

(Agri.) and Ph.D. degree programmes in Plant Pathology, for all the universities of Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Sericulture and the related streams of Botany. ‘Chemicals in Plant Disease Management’ is a compulsory subject in several degree programmes. The present book solely caters to the students of Plant Pathology, as it covers a wide range of topics related to chemicals used to control plant diseases, viz., Agrochemicals used in plant disease management: Current scenario; History and development of agrochemicals; Formulations, application and phytotoxicity of agrochemicals; Classification and modes of action of agrochemicals; Registration and regulation of agrochemicals; Safe handling and use of agrochemicals; Compatibility and persistence of agrochemicals; Pollution and hazards by agrochemicals; and New generation fungicides. Special Features: There has been a gap of 30 years since the publication of a book on the subject addressed here, therefore, this book makes a novel appearance on Agrochemicals in recent times. Presently, there is no book available in the market covering the whole syllabus prescribed by the ICAR on Agrochemicals. To meet this requirement the book is designed to cover the entire syllabus prescribed by the ICAR for the courses in P.G. programmes on Plant Pathology. Recent developments in chemicals used in Plant Disease Management have been added, updated, and presented in a detailed manner. Serviceable Tables, Illustration, Figures, and Data are provided for an effective understanding, of both the students and the faculty. Appendices on ‘Read the Label’ and ‘Preparation of spray volume’ are provided. Detailed Glossary of key words used, has been given for important and frequently occurring topics. Exhaustive ‘Bibliography’ for further reading is also provisioned. Since the book is first of its kind, it is highly recommended for the students, faculty, policy makers, private and government pesticide industries, NGO’s, State Government Departments of Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, and Sericulture. Apart from the students appearing for U.G. /P.G. Entrance Examinations in various Universities, several competitive examinations such as ARS, NET, SRF, JRF, IAS, KAS, progressive farmers and planters, and Seed companies, are also expected to be benefited by the book.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is a major issue in the provision of health care. It is estimated that one in four people in developed countries are likely to develop it at some time. As longevity steadily increases, the incidence of malignant disease is expected to rise further. Important advances in the control of cancer have taken place and curative treatment has improved, notably in some of the rarer tumours, particularly in children. Advances in the more common cancers have been less marked, although adjunctive systemic treatment and population screening are lowering mortality from the most prevalent cance- carcinoma of the breast. Despite this progress, complete control of malignant disease is still a long way off. However, our understanding of the molecular biology of cancer has increased enormously in recent years and the application of this knowledge holds considerable promise for developing new therapeutic strategies. As for prevention, the cause of most cancers is still poorly understood although it is clear that tobacco avoidance would prevent most lung cancers and several others. Cancer is studied at many different levels: molecular and cellular biology, pathology in patients (particularly clinical trials), and prevention and populations (epidemiology). The psychosocial problems caused to patients and their families are being increasingly recognized and subjected to systematic study. Workers in the field, therefore, range from basic scientists to epidemiologists, from hospital specialists to community support teams. Each needs to have at least some knowledge of the role the others play.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biotechnology in the Modern Medicinal System: Advances in Gene Therapy, Immunotherapy, and Targeted Drug Delivery presents an informative picture of the state-of-the-art research and development of actionable knowledge in medical biotechnology, specifically involving gene therapy, immunotherapy, and targeted drug delivery systems. The book includes novel approaches for therapy of various ailments and the real-world challenges and complexities of the current drug delivery methodologies and techniques. The volume helps to bridge the gap between academic research and real-time clinical applications and the needs of medical biotechnology methods. This edited book also provides a detailed application of medical biotechnology in drug discovery and the treatment of various deadly diseases. Chapters discuss targeted drug delivery to specific sites to avoid possible entry to non-targeted sites, minimizing adverse effects. The volume provides information about the roles of alternative routes of drug targeting, like intranasal and transdermal, resulting in improving patient compliance. Targeted drug delivery is explored for several health issues, such as neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, malaria, and hemoglobin disorders. Also considered is the role of genes in various genetic diseases and gene therapy, and immunogene therapy as alternative approaches to conventional cancer therapy. Finally, the book investigates the important role of computers in biotechnology to accelerate research and development in the modern medicinal field for better and optimum results. Studies show that significant improvement has been observed in the development of a faster and less invasive diagnostic system for the treatment of diseases by utilizing both artificial intelligence (AI) and biotechnology. This valuable volume provides a wealth of information that will be valuable to scientists and researchers, faculty, and students.
