Book Synopsis Mrs. Leslie Carter by : Craig Clinton
Download or read book Mrs. Leslie Carter written by Craig Clinton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-10-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born Caroline Louise Dudley, Mrs. Leslie Carter was destined to become one of America's principal turn-of-the century actresses. In 1889, a high profile divorce case labeled her an adulteress and sent her to the brink of poverty. With characteristic resilience, however, Mrs. Carter used infamy to her advantage. Retaining her married name as an act of revenge against her ex-husband, she approached David Belasco, one of the foremost playwright/directors of the day, and persuaded him to teach her the art of acting. So began one of theatre's most prolific partnerships. Not only did Belasco become Mrs. Carter's acting coach, he composed plays specifically as vehicles to showcase her particular talents. Although their relationship ruptured in 1906, Mrs. Carter continued to enjoy international renown. Weathering the changing times and methods of the early twentieth century, she persevered through stage, silent movies and vaudeville shows. This biography focuses particularly on Mrs. Carter's successful career and on her professional partnership with David Belasco. Spanning a period of radical transformation in American theatre, her career reflected--and endured--the artistic changes which occurred during the decades on either side of the century mark. Period photographs and theatrical art are included.

Book Synopsis Allusions in Ulysses by : Weldon Thornton
Download or read book Allusions in Ulysses written by Weldon Thornton and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 1968 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive list of allusions found in James Joyce's modern classic, Ulysses, is in itself a classic and is a feat of literary scholarship of unprecedented magnitude. In brief, this book is a copiously annotated list of Joyce's allusions in such areas as literature, philosophy, theology, history, and the fine arts. So awesome an undertaking would not have been possible without the prior work of such persons as Stuart Gilbert, Joseph Prescott, William York Tindall, M.J.C. Hodgart, Mabel Worthington, and many others. But the present list is more than a compilation of previously discovered allusions, for it contains many allusions that have never been suggested before, as well as some that have only been partially or mistakenly identified in earlier publications. In preparing this work, the author has kept its usefulness to the reader foremost in mind. He often refreshed the reader's memory in concerning the context of an allusion, since its context, in one sense or another, is always the guide to its function in the novel. The entire list is fully cross-referenced and keyed by page and line to both the old and new Modern Library editions of Ulysses. In addition, the index is prepared in such a way that it indexes not only the List but also the novel itself. The purpose of allusion in a literary work is essentially the same as that of all other types of metaphor -- the development and revelation of character, structure, and theme -- and, when skillfully used, it does all of these simultaneously. Joyce's use of allusion is distinguished from that of other authors not by its purposes, but by its extent and thoroughness. Ulysses involves dozens of allusive contexts, all continually intersecting, modifying, and qualifying one another. Here again Joyce's uniqueness and complexity lie not in his themes or characters, nor in his basic methods of developing them, but in his accepting the challenge of an Olympian use of his chosen methods. The value of this volume to Joyce scholars and students is obvious; however, its usefulness to anyone who reads Ulysses is as great, if not greater. It can truly be the key to this difficult but rewarding novel.

The lives of 35 actresses are explored in detail. Some are familiar: Margaret Hamilton starred in dozens of films before and after her signature role as the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz; Una Merkel nearly died when her mother committed suicide in 1945. Others are nearly forgotten: Maude Eburne owed her career to a spectacular fall on the Broadway stage in 1914; Greta Meyer, who played the quintessential German maid, came to Hollywood after years in New York’s Yiddish theater—though she wasn’t Jewish.

Texts and Studies. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the awakening of critical interest in recent years, Victorian theatre before Wilde and Shaw is still a virtually undiscovered country. The world of Victorian theatres, with their complicated personal interconnections and astonishing feats of professionalism, and Victorian drama itself, often skillfully written and controversial, are worth investigating. Henry Irving, the icon and later the bogeyman of a whole theatrical era, has been the object of several scholarly works and essays, inevitably focusing on his Lyceum years. What was Irving before the Lyceum? Or, in other words, how did Irving become Irving? The present book reconstructs the event that made Irving famous overnight and, as it were, made the Lyceum years possible: the London première of Dion Boucicault’s Hunted Down, or, The Two Lives of Mary Leigh. It investigates the circumstances of the composition of the play and of its first London production, also presenting the first edition of the text of Boucicault’s play in 150 years. The reconstruction presents twenty-first-century readers with a strange world of irascible playwrights, all-powerful stage managers, long-forgotten Pre-Raphaelite beauties and humble theatre folk in which the young Irving moved, a world whose traces remained visible and whose influence remained palpable in the years of Irving’s later fame.
