Book excerpt: Constructing Scientific Psychology is the first full-scale interpretation of the life and work of the major American neuropsychologist Karl Lashley that sets Lashley's creation of a laboratory-centered, decisively materialistic science of brain and behavior in its scientific and social contexts. The book places Lashley's neuropsychology at the heart of two controversies that polarized the sciences of mind and brain in the U.S. in the first half of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, about 50 years after the publication of Lashley’s Brain Mechanisms and Intelligence. The aim of this book was to review Lashley’s major contributions and to trace the development of physiological psychology through the experimental work of Lashley’s students and colleagues and those influenced by Lashley’s writings. The contributors were invited to review their own experimental work in a lecture and to indicate how Lashley’s seminal contributions might have exerted an influence in shaping or directing their thinking. This volume is the result of their efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at the history of the development of modern neuropsychology. The criticisms of Watson's connectionist ideas by both Lashley and Hebb are examined and an argument is made that Hebb's proposals mirrored those of Lashley in important ways, raising the question of priority. The author relates discussion to a critique of contemporary perspectives in neuropsychological theory. A collection of Lashley's papers and lectures dating from 1924 to 1958 is included to help support the author's theses. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978, this study examines the shortcomings of some theoretical approaches to psychological and neurophysiological mechanisms at the time. Keith Oatley illustrates the extent of these shortcomings by showing how inefficient brain researchers – using their present approaches – would be in trying to understand a computer, which is considerably simpler than the human brain. He concludes that we need better theories than those usually espoused in psychology, and goes on to expound a theory of cognitive representation and inference in perception, which began with Helmholtz more than a hundred years ago but which can now be given substance and formal structure in artificial intelligence programs. The author deploys this theory to give an account of some fundamental problems, such as how we see a three-dimensional world, and how the brain copes so well with incomplete sensory data and with damage to its own components.

Book excerpt: Most general knowledge about the brain and its workings is very dated, drawing on studies from the first part of the previous century or even earlier. However, the advent of brain scanning which allows the study of the ordinary working brain, rather than just dead ones or people having brain surgery, has resulted in some amazing new developments that contribute immensely to our general social understanding of people and how they work. Written by Dr Nicky Hayes, bestselling author of Understand Psychology, Your Brain and You is a beginner's guide to neuropsychology. It takes you through every aspect of how your brain works, from nervous systems and brain structures to neural transmission and neural correlates. Book excerpt: Revisiting the Classic Studies is a series of texts that introduces readers to the studies in psychology that changed the way we think about core topics in the discipline today. It provokes students to ask more interesting and challenging questions about the field by encouraging a deeper level of engagement both with the details of the studies themselves and with the nature of their contribution. Edited by leading scholars in their field and written by researchers at the cutting edge of these developments, the chapters in each text provide details of the original works and their theoretical and empirical impact, and then discuss the ways in which thinking and research has advanced in the years since the studies were conducted. Brain and Behaviour: Revisiting the Classic Studies traces 17 ground-breaking studies by researchers such as Gage, Luria, Sperry, and Tulving to re-examine and reflect on their findings and engage in a lively discussion of the subsequent work that they have inspired. Suitable for students on neuropsychology courses at all levels, as well as anyone with an enquiring mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for the present volume grew from discussions that the four of us had among ourselves and with our colleagues at recent scientific meetings. All of us were impressed by the wealth of empirical data that was being generated by investigators interested in brain damage and recovery from both behavioral and biological orientations. Nevertheless, we were concerned about the relative paucity of attempts to evaluate the data provided by new technologies in more than a narrow context or to present new theories or reexamine time-honored ideas in the light of new findings. We recognized that science is guided by new technologies, by hard data, and by theories and ideas. Yet we were forced to conclude that, although investi gators were often anxious to publicize new methods and empirical fmdings, the same could not be said about broad hypotheses, underlying concepts, or in ferences and speculations that extended beyond the empirical data. Not only were many scientists not formally discussing the broad implications of their data, but, when stimulating ideas were presented, they were more likely to be heard in the halls or over a meal than in organized sessions at scientific meetings.
