Download or read book Face Perception written by Andy Young and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human faces are unique biological structures that convey a complex variety of important social messages. Even strangers can tell things from our faces – our feelings, our locus of attention, something of what we are saying, our age, sex and ethnic group, whether they find us attractive. In recent years there has been genuine progress in understanding how our brains derive all these different messages from faces and what can happen when one or other of the structures involved is damaged. Face Perception provides an up-to-date, integrative summary by two authors who have helped develop and shape the field over the past 30 years. It encompasses topics as diverse as the visual information our brains can exploit when we look at faces, whether prejudicial attitudes can affect how we see faces, and how people with neurodevelopmental disorders see faces. The material is digested and summarised in a way that is accessible to students, within a structure that focuses on the different things we can do with faces. It offers a compelling synthesis of behavioural, neuropsychological and cognitive neuroscience approaches to develop a distinctive point of view of the area. The book concludes by reviewing what is known about the development of face processing and re-examines the question of what makes faces ‘special’. Written in a clear and accessible style, this is invaluable reading for all students and researchers interested in studying face perception and social cognition.
Book Synopsis Face Recognition by : Katherine B. Leeland
Download or read book Face Recognition written by Katherine B. Leeland and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Face perception is the process by which the brain and mind understand and interpret the face, particularly the human face. The face is an important site for the identification of others and conveys significant social information. Probably because of the importance of its role in social interaction, psychological processes involved in face perception are known to be present from birth, to be complex, and to involve large and widely distributed areas in the brain. These parts of the brain can be damaged to cause a specific impairment in understanding faces known as prosopagnosia. This book presents the latest research in the field.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Research on Face Processing by : A.W. Young
Download or read book Handbook of Research on Face Processing written by A.W. Young and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high degree of scientific interest in face processing is readily understandable, since people's faces provide such a wealth of social information. Moreover, investigations have produced evidence of highly precocious face processing abilities in infants, and of neural mechanisms in adults that seem to be differentially involved in face perception. Such findings demonstrate that, as one might expect, the psychological importance of the face has clear biological underpinnings. There are also urgent practical reasons for wanting to understand face processing. The most extensively investigated of these involve forensic issues. Other applications include the development of automated recognition systems for security and other purposes, and understanding and rehabilitating disorders and impairments linked to brain injuries and psychiatric conditions.Current studies of face processing are grouped in the volume into eleven topic areas. For each area, the editors approached an acknowledged authority and commissioned a review chapter summarising the findings that have been made. These chapters were then circulated to other experts who were asked to write brief commentaries that developed theoretical or empirical points of importance to each area. In this way, a balanced coverage of each topic is achieved. The book begins with a section examining the evidence suggesting that there may be something `special' about face processing. This is followed by consideration of the face as a visual pattern. Then there are four sections dealing with major uses of facial information, followed by sections discussing the development of face processing abilities and the neural mechanisms involved. The last three sections of the book deal with topics for which there are important practical applications for the studies reported.

Book Synopsis Face Perception across the Life-Span by : Bozana Meinhardt-Injac
Download or read book Face Perception across the Life-Span written by Bozana Meinhardt-Injac and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-03-17 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Face perception is a highly evolved visual skills in humans. This complex ability develops across the life-span, steeply rising in infancy, refining across childhood and adolescence, reaching highest levels in adulthood and declining in old age. As such, the development of face perception comprises multiple skills, including sensory (e.g., mechanisms of holistic, configural and featural perception), cognitive (e.g., memory, processing speed, attentional control), and also emotional and social (e.g., reading and interpreting facial expression) domains. Whereas our understanding of specific functional domains involved in face perception is growing, there is further pressing demand for a multidisciplinary approach toward a more integrated view, describing how face perception ability relates to and develops with other domains of sensory and cognitive functioning. In this research topic we bring together a collection of papers that provide a shot of the current state of the art of theorizing and investigating face perception from the perspective of multiple ability domains. We would like to thank all authors for their valuable contributions that advanced our understanding of face and emotion perception across development.
Book Synopsis Neuropsychology of Communication by : Michela Balconi
Download or read book Neuropsychology of Communication written by Michela Balconi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the communicative and neuropsychological correlates of daily interactions are discussed. The predominant account on explaining the construction of meaning by humans is the inter-relational perspective, that postulates an intentional convergence of meaning arising as a consequence of the active exchanges between people. The neural correlates of communication were illustrated in the light of new empirical results, considering the main topics of: a) language and language development; b) pragmatics and neuropragmatics of communication; c) neurocognition and the cognitive bases of intentions; d) nonverbal communication and emotion contribution to the communicative systems. New methodological approaches are considered, with particular attention to neuroimaging (such as PET and fMRI) and brain stimulation techniques (as MEG and TMS), as well as their application to the clinical field.

Book excerpt: "In the World Library of Psychologists series, international experts themselves present career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces - extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, and their major practical theoretical contributions.Andy Young has an international reputation as an eminent scholar and pioneer in the field of face perception. This selection brings together some of his best work over the last thirty years.A specially written introduction gives an overview of his career and contextualises the selection in relation to changes in the field during this time. The first section on 'Theoretical Perspectives' will explain the background to research on facial expression and the types of question that have been addressed. These include the relation between perception of facial identity and expression, how expressions are perceptually represented, and multimodal contributions to interpreting other people's emotions. The second section 'Experimental Approaches' will explain the key techniques and tests of important theoretical questions. The next part will give examples of selective impairments affecting fear or disgust recognition from face and voice, and cases with more general problems in recognising emotion. These offer important evidence for the resolution of theoretical questions raised in Part 1. The fourth section looks at a combination of functional brain imaging and experimental methods to investigate the neural representation of facial expression. Finally, the last part will take methods from the other parts of the book and apply them to investigating some of the factors that may underlie different types of clinical or everyday problem and bringing out potential implications for treatment. The book enables the reader to trace developments in facial expression recognition over the last thirty years. It will appeal to anyone with interests in these areas as well as being an invaluable resource for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in face perception or visual cognition.
