Declines are most pronounced during the transition into early adulthood. This dissertation consisted of three studies examining PA decline during the transition into early adulthood: (1) to understand patterns of PA and other health behaviours of Canadians; (2) to understand reasons for PA declines during entry into university; and (3) to examine the feasibility and effects of a website-delivered PA intervention.Given justification for intervening with the university population, study 2 explored students' perceptions of PA, and their preferences towards a PA intervention. Eight focus groups were conducted with first-year university students (N = 45). Results found students being concerned with PA decline, and were receptive to an Internet-based intervention. However, such concerns are inflected with ambivalence, potentially posing a challenge for interventionists.Study 1 utilized multilevel modeling to identify patterns of PA, binge drinking and smoking among a nationally-representative cohort of adolescents (N = 640). Results found PA decline evident among all young adults transitioning into early adulthood regardless of educational trajectory -- declines being most pronounced among college/university males -- highlighting the saliency of PA decline, as other health behaviours stabilized or declined during early adulthood.

Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. Book excerpt: There is a noticeable decline in physical activity participation during transitions, including moving between levels of education (Bray & Born, 2004; Gyursick, Bray & Brittain, 2004; Bray & Kwan, 2007). Despite its importance, little is known about the process of successful transitions and how it impacts physical activity behaviour for university students. A way to further understand the transition process is to explore the leisure constraints and the constraints negotiation process for these young adults. The purpose of this study was to examine physically active leisure for young adults, who were successful at continuing their participation in physical activity during their transition into university. Students were recruited from randomly selected 2nd and 3rd year general courses and invited to participate in a semi-structured, one on one interview with the researcher. Fourteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with second to fourth year university students at a mid-size western Canadian university. Their narratives explored students' beliefs, constraints, and constraint negotiation strategies they used to stay physically active, in a variety of individual and team sport physical activities. The participants were categorized into four categories, based on their participation level, and an in-depth analysis of narratives was done for each participant category. These profiles are rated on a continuum that determined whether they were more or less active than before, and on the types of the activities they pursued. The comparison and the placementinto the particular categories were determined by what type of activities they are doing at university. The students reported having both positive orientation and an identity that was associated with their active behaviour. Physical activity was noted as a higher priority in their lives. Their current student environment and student lifestyle was an enabler for physically active behaviours. Students described feeling constrained, in some aspects of their behaviour, but because physical activity was a higher priority, they were able to successfully negotiate those constraints. A key theme that emerged from these stories was enjoyment, but for two separate reasons; the social aspect and a challenge aspect. These aspects were found in the same activity or different activity, depending on the interests of the participant. However, it is important that the individual understand why they participate in physical activity and the outcome(s) they seek. This will help the student continue their physical activity behaviour during transitions, into post-secondary education and through other life course stages.

This statement has helped propelled me to collect and analyze data in order to see what the physical activity is like for an undergraduate college student at the University of Texas. Researchers have discovered that many college students have reported understanding the benefits of physical activity, but that they report that there are many barriers in their daily life that thrust physical activity into the backseat as a priority (Lopez, Gallegos, & Extremera, 2010). Knowing that some college students will ignore physical activity, regardless of the health-related benefits, urges us to further discover the attitude of college students towards physical activity and what factors seem to have the most affect, whether positively or negatively, when it comes to their decisions on physical activity. Many university students decrease their PA levels (Gyurcsik, Bray, & Brittain, 2004; Keating et al., 2005; McArthur & Raedeke, 2009). Knowing this, I seek to answer the question, "What happens to the levels of physical activity throughout an undergraduate student's life and what are the contributing factors to their level of physical activity?" Researchers noted that a healthy college-aged student should be participating in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least 5 days per week (Nelson, 2007). My thesis is an analysis of daily and weekly activity, as well as what kinds of physical activity college students like and do not, the way in which they participate, either independently or with friends, as well as where they partake in physical activity. My subjects answered questions based on their physical activity levels throughout their college years. The subjects ranged between first and fifth year undergraduate students, which allowed me to get some insight as to how their physical activity levels have changed throughout the duration of their college careers.
