Book excerpt: Covering a 45-year period, The Nebraska Way chronicles both the historic rise and gradual fall of the Nebraska football dynasty, from the hiring of Bob Devaney and succession of Tom Osborne to the firing of Frank Solich and rapid separation from tradition. Along with the highs and lows of the Cornhuskers' achievements, The Nebraska Way also attempts to define Tom Osborne's philosophy as a coach and mentor as well as the relationship between the football program and the state it represents. Also discussed is the transition from a unique and special program to one assuming the characteristics of any other major college football program, and what it means for the future of the University of Nebraska football program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since becoming the Nebraska women’s volleyball coach in 2000, John Cook has led the team to four national championships, seven NCAA semifinal appearances, and the nation’s top winning percentage in women’s volleyball. In Dream Like a Champion Cook shares the coaching and leadership philosophy that has enabled him to become one of the game’s winningest coaches. Growing up in San Diego, Cook acquired his coaching philosophy from his experiences first as a football coach, then as a student of the sport of volleyball on the beaches of Southern California. After a stint as an assistant volleyball coach at Nebraska, he returned to Nebraska as head coach in 2000 and won the national championship in his first season. Even with a bar set so high, Cook saw at Nebraska’s tradition-rich program the potential for even greater growth and success. He decided to focus on higher expectations, training, motivation, goal setting, and other ways to build the strongest teams possible. In Dream Like a Champion Cook shares the philosophy behind Nebraska’s culture of success and reveals how he’s had to learn, evolve, and be coached himself, even in his fifth decade as a coach. With openness and candor he delivers insights about his methods and passes along lessons that can be used by leaders in any field. Cook also shares behind-the-scenes anecdotes about Nebraska volleyball moments and players—and how he coaches and teaches his players about life beyond the court.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published through the Recovering Languages and Literacies of the Americas initiative, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation The Omaha Language and the Omaha Way provides a comprehensive textbook for students, scholars, and laypersons to learn to speak and understand the language of the Omaha Nation. Mark Awakuni-Swetland, Vida Woodhull Stabler, Aubrey Streit Krug, Loren Frerichs, and Rory Larson have collaborated with elder speakers, including Alberta Grant Canby, Emmaline Walker Sanchez, Marcella Woodhull Cavou, and Donna Morris Parker, to write this book. The original and creative pedagogical method used in this textbook--teaching the Omaha language through Omaha culture--consists of a structured series of lesson plans. It is the result of a generous collaboration between the Department of Anthropology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Umóⁿhoⁿ Language and Culture Center at Umóⁿhoⁿ Nation Public School in Macy, Nebraska. The method draws on the accumulated wisdom and knowledge of Awakuni-Swetland to illustrate the Omaha values of balance and integration. The contents are shaped into two parts, each of which complements the other--just as the Earth and Sky do. This textbook features an introduction by Awakuni-Swetland on the history and phonology of the Omaha language; lessons from the Umóⁿhoⁿ Language and Culture Center at Macy, with a writing system quick sheet; situation quick sheets; lessons on games; lessons on spring, summer, fall, and winter; an Omaha language resource list; and a glossary in the standard Macy orthography of the Omaha language. The textbook also includes cultural lessons in the language by Awakuni-Swetland and lessons from the Omaha language class at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Omaha Language and the Omaha Way offers a linguistic foundation for tribal members, students, scholars, and laypersons, featuring Omaha community lessons, the standard Macy orthography, and UNL orthography all under one cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standing Bear, a Ponca Native American chief, is best known for successfully arguing in U.S. District Court in 1879 that Native Americans are "persons within the meaning of the law" who have the right of habeas corpus. When playwright Christopher Cartmill returned to his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska, to write a play about Chief Standing Bear, he unknowingly began a complicated adventure. As he followed the story of the Ponca chief who fought so hard to return from a reservation in Oklahoma to his homeland in northern Nebraska, Cartmill stumbled into the politics of identity, contested notions of homeland, and his own past. Chronicling these adventures in a series of dispatches to friends, he documented the transformation of a research trip into a three-year exploration of Nebraska, its Native community, the meaning of home, and the complex relationship we all have with history. These dispatches, originally presented in Cartmill's celebrated performance and now gathered together in this book, offer snapshots of a New Yorker's travels into the heartland, insights into a very personal journey, and glimpses into a history that critiques and continues the American story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nebraska is famous as the only state with a unicameral legislature, but the government of Nebraska is unique in other ways as well. This first comprehensive handbook is meant to help Nebraskans understand the government of their state; at the same time, it is addressed to political scientists with an interest in state and local government and to people in other states who are considering the adoption of Nebraska's practices. The book sets out not only to describe but also to assess the government of Nebraska in operation and to explain the anomaly of an innovative government in an apparently conservative political setting. The topics discussed include the state constitution, the governor and other elected officials, the legislature, the judiciary, the bureaucracy, the citizens' political attitudes and behavior, trends in state expenditures and revenue, local government, and intergovernmental relations.

Approximately 30 activities and 200 geography related places and facts are covered. Students work alone or in groups and use maps, reference books or resource people to complete challenging riddles, matching games, word searches, fill-in lists, scavenger hunts, and completion exercises that reinforce learning, sharpen research skills, and provide a lively introduction to Nebraska.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the remarkable but virtually unknown story of how the quiet, conservative residents of a small, poor Nebraska community refused to be seduced by the oratory of the people than run this country, or by the offer of $3 million a year for 40 years (despite the fact that the economy of the community was extremely depressed) - and tenaciously fought the powers-that-be (i.e., the state government, the federal government, and Bechtel) against locating a low-level nuclear waste dump site in its backyard. Boyd County's right-wing farmers rose up in revolt, and eventual victory. It took them a decade of bitter struggle, but it transformed a small group of farmers from isolationist rebels to ardent environmentalists, altered the scope of the U.S.'s nuclear waste policy, and moved a fly-over state to change from Republican to Democrat.; Well researched (as the author has worked from hundreds of source documents and 10,000 pages of transcribed interviews), this engaging, witty book will undoubtedly get publicity and will catch the imagination of a large cross-section of Americans today who are, once again, inclined to trust neither our government nor the powerful multinational corporations that, once again, may not have our people's best interests at heart.
