Hemmed in by disillusionment with her engineering career, the expectations of a tyrannical mother and bloodless matches with her lover, Reed she yearns for a life of her own design. A whiskey soaked voice from her childhood pulls her back to her island roots to face the father whose instincts capsizes notions of kinship and trust. Set in New Orleans and Jamaica, Journey to the Land of Look Behind illustrates what's left amidst the wreckage of a woman abandoned by a father who navigates relationships like a chess grandmaster. From the intoxicating bacchanal of New Orleans' speakeasies to the green grottoes of Port Antonio, hers is a journey beyond the bounds of family and obligation to full self-emancipation.
Book Synopsis The Battle for Room 314 by : Ed Boland
Download or read book The Battle for Room 314 written by Ed Boland and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this insightfully honest and moving memoir about the realities of teaching in an inner-city school, Ed Boland "smashes the dangerous myth of the hero-teacher [and] shows us how high the stakes are for our most vulnerable students" (Piper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black). In a fit of idealism, Ed Boland left a twenty-year career as a non-profit executive to teach in a tough New York City public high school. But his hopes quickly collided headlong with the appalling reality of his students' lives and a hobbled education system unable to help them. Freddy runs a drug ring for his incarcerated brother; Nee-cole is homeschooled on the subway by her brilliant homeless mother; Byron's Ivy League dream is dashed because he is undocumented. In the end, Boland isn't hoisted on his students' shoulders and no one passes AP anything. This is no urban fairy tale of at-risk kids saved by a Hollywood hero, but a searing indictment of schools that claim to be progressive but still fail their students. Told with compassion, humor, and a keen eye, Boland's story is sure to ignite debate about the future of American education and attempts to reform it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER They met over their dogs. Gail Caldwell and Caroline Knapp (author of Drinking: A Love Story) became best friends, talking about everything from their love of books and their shared history of a struggle with alcohol to their relationships with men. Walking the woods of New England and rowing on the Charles River, these two private, self-reliant women created an attachment more profound than either of them could ever have foreseen. Then, several years into this remarkable connection, Knapp was diagnosed with cancer. With her signature exquisite prose, Caldwell mines the deepest levels of devotion, and courage in this gorgeous memoir about treasuring a best friend, and coming of age in midlife. Let’s Take the Long Way Home is a celebration of the profound transformations that come from intimate connection—and it affirms, once again, why Gail Caldwell is recognized as one of our bravest and most honest literary voices.

Book Synopsis Two Suns at Sunset by : Gene Doucette
Download or read book Two Suns at Sunset written by Gene Doucette and published by Gene Doucette. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Dib! Dib is an Earthlike planet, only slightly smaller, with shorter days and longer years, in orbit around twin suns. On the continent of Geo, in the city of Velon in the nation of Inimata, a man lies dead in his study. The Murdered Monk In life, Professor Orno Linus was a world-class scholar: an astrophysicist, a dead-language linguist, and an expert in (and apparent true believer of) the religious concept of the Cull, i.e., the end of the world. Widely respected, nothing about Linus’s expertise suggests somebody might want him dead. Professor Linus is also Brother Linus, a high-ranking member of an ancient, powerful religious organization known as the House. This makes his murder much more complicated, but no more explicable, because murder on House grounds just doesn’t happen. Not even when one of the last things the victim did was steal something important from the House vault. Finally, Orno is also the younger brother of Calcut Linus, one of the most powerful and criminally dangerous people on the planet. Killing any Linus means incurring the wrath of a man for whom laws very rarely apply. In short, Professor Orno Linus is a highly unlikely murder victim. And yet, somebody killed him. The Cursed Detective Detective Makk Stidgeon already knows he’s unlucky. He’s a cholem: an outcast. A bad-luck charm. He was born this way, and has the brand on his wrist to prove it. But in terms of bad luck, the gods have really gone overboard by sticking him with the Linus case. Between a House leadership that seems more interested in retrieving their stolen artifact than in solving the murder of one of their own, the demands of the murderous Calcut Linus, a new partner who seems to know more than she’s telling, and an omnipresent news media constantly looking for an angle on the biggest story of the year, Makk barely has time to just follow the clues. And that’s before an impossible video surfaces that purports to reveal the killer’s identity. What makes it impossible? The person in the video couldn’t have possibly done it. To get to the bottom of the Orno’s murder, Makk will have to navigate between the House and the Linus family, find the source of the video, and figure out what’s missing from the House vault. Even if he can pull all that off, he may discover he’s not at the end of a mystery at all, but at the beginning of a much larger one. Tandemstar: The Outcast Cycle. The journey begins here.

Book Synopsis The Hopwood Poets Revisited by : Donald Beagle
Download or read book The Hopwood Poets Revisited written by Donald Beagle and published by . This book was released on 2018-09 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION: This book began as a set of Q&A conversations with a select group of living poets who have won Hopwood Awards at the University of Michigan. In reading interviews with poets, I've felt that foundational questions are too often left unasked, and therefore remain unanswered. Understandably, no interviewer wishes to burden a noted author with questions one assumes they may have answered hundreds of times. But given the remarkable variety of talented poets who have won Hopwood Awards over the decades, my sense was that asking even obvious questions might elicit an interesting variety of replies. So I set my interviewer's ego aside, and began with very basic queries drawn from my experience teaching undergraduate poetry workshops at Duke University in the late 1980's, and (years earlier), at Jackson Community College in Michigan. Having noted that students on these very different campuses tended to ask similar questions of visiting poets, I settled on a handful of standard questions, while adding one or two personalized for each.INCLUDES INTERVIEWS AND CONVERSATIONS WITH: Robert Hayden, John Ciardi, Anne Stevenson, Frank O'Hara, Marge Piercy, Nancy Willard, Keith Waldrop, Rosmarie Waldrop, Tom Clark, X.J. Kennedy, Patricia Hooper, Lawrence Joseph, Jane Kenyon, Garrett Hongo, Donald Beagle, Laura Kasischke, Tung-Hui Hu, Derek Mong.
