Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present day, many professing Evangelicals believe that "salvation" stems from a superficial display of moral behavior, believe in Jesus and nothing more is required in the life of a Christian. Roberts viewed this approach as the efforts of a natural man attempting to accumulate merit before God to secure eternal life – a deceptive scheme crafted by the devil for the unsuspecting soul. His book aims to guide sinners away from these innate inclinations and towards Jesus Christ. It's more than a mere invitation to Christ; it's a robust tool designed to jolt the sinner’s understanding into grasping the fundamental aspects of the Gospel of Jesus Christ concerning sin and salvation. This book serves as a heartfelt guide, mapping the path for the natural man towards the redeeming grace of King Jesus. Some have remarked that this particular book stands as an unparalleled exhortation in the lineage of Christian literature. It explores deeply the covenant of God, detailing the ways and means through which a sinner, guided and changed by God, can achieve salvation. It elucidates the path to saving grace and to the sole Redeemer of God’s chosen, with what many believe to be some of the most compelling and poignant directives and descriptions in the Gospel. Its impact has been compared to, and some say even exceeds, the urgency found in Alleine’s “Alarm to Unconverted Sinners.” Roberts' primary aim with this work was to not only spark interest in Christ among sinners but also to guide them towards the sole means of salvation. This was achieved through targeted, potent, straightforward, and factual sermonizing and writing. It’s likely that you have never encountered such preaching or writing before. As the Scriptures are thoroughly explored, they reveal the essence of Gospel beauty, glorifying Christ in their accuracy, fervor, and theological depth. Christians and non-Christians will find themselves transformed by this work if they take it to heart sincerely. After reading his twenty-four specific directions for discovering the true, biblical Christ, readers will inevitably find themselves either closer to heaven or closer to hell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis Roberts (1609-1675), was a Presbyterian and Reformed Calvinistic Puritan. He was an eminent theologian in his day and widely known for his theological works. From one of McMahon's introductory chapters: "Most Evangelicals today believe that salvation is by an outward show of moral character. This kind of religion is specially designed by the devil for the natural man. Roberts' work on directing sinners from being captive to their natural tendencies to Christ is not simply a work that shakes the sinner's intellectual mechanisms to understand the basics of the Gospel of Jesus Christ concerning sin and salvation, but this work is one of the most violent theological earthquakes of Gospel exhortation ever penned by any pastor or theologian in the history of the Christian church. It shows the natural man the way to saving grace, and to the only Redeemer of God's elect with some of the most profound and poignant Gospel directives and descriptions. Roberts' main objective is to get sinners not only interested in Christ, but pointed in the direction of the only means by which men must be saved. And he does this through the most pin-pointed, powerful, straight, and objective sermonizing that any reader might ever hear. This work is an epitome of Gospel sweetness and is Christ-glorifying in its precision, passion and theological power. Christians and non-Christians alike cannot come away from this work unchanged. After reading Roberts' 24 specific directions to finding the true, biblical Christ of the Bible, readers will be either closer to heaven or closer to hell."This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book excerpt: In this important study Hays argues against the mainstream that any attempt to account for the nature and method of Paul's theological language must first reckon with the centrality of narrative elements in his thought. Through an in-depth investigation of Galatians 3:1-4:11, Hays shows that the framework of Paul's thought is neither a system of doctrines nor his personal religious experience but the "sacred story" of Jesus Christ.

Yet he is also a man of unshakable faith in God. How does he reconcile the seemingly unreconcilable? His book is essential reading for anyone who wonders about the deepest questions of all: why are we here? How did we get here? And what does life mean?

Book excerpt: ‘This is Wright at his best – exegete, theologian, churchman, and public intellectual rolled into one.’ Miroslav Volf ‘Wright’s crowning achievement.’ John Cottingham Building on his critically acclaimed Gifford Lectures, N. T. Wright presents a richly nuanced case for a theology based on a renewed understanding of historical knowledge. The question of 'natural theology' interlocks with the related questions of how we can conceive of God acting in the world, and of why, if God is God, the world is full of evil. Can specific events in history, like those reported in the Gospels, afford the necessary point from which to answer such questions? Widely shared cultural and philosophical assumptions have conditioned our understanding of history in ways that make the idea of divine action in history problematic. But could better historical study itself win from ancient Jewish and Christian cosmology and eschatology a renewed way of understanding the relationship between God and the world? N. T. Wright argues that this can indeed be done, and in this ground-breaking book he develops a distinctive approach to natural theology grounded in what he calls an 'epistemology of love'. This approach arises from his reflection on the significance of the ancient concept of the 'new creation' for our understanding the reality of the world, the reality of God and their relation to one another.

Book excerpt: Southwestern Journal of Theology 2021 Book of the Year Award (Theological Studies) 2021 Book Award, The Gospel Coalition (Honorable Mention, Academic Theology) Following his well-received Interpreting Scripture with the Great Tradition, Craig Carter presents the biblical and theological foundations of trinitarian classical theism. Carter, a leading Christian theologian known for his provocative defenses of classical approaches to doctrine, critiques the recent trend toward modifying or rejecting classical theism in favor of modern "relational" understandings of God. The book includes a short history of trinitarian theology from its patristic origins to the modern period, and a concluding appendix provides a brief summary of classical trinitarian theology. Foreword by Carl R. Trueman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ is clearly portrayed in Scripture as the incarnate God-man who came down from heaven to save his people from the apostasy of Adam in the garden. He is the second Adam, the Branch and High Priest of the everlasting covenant (planned before time began), who came to redeem and save wicked sinners through his merit of living a perfect life to uphold God’s Law, and willingly died on a cross to became a curse through death in order to appease God’s wrath for his one and only bride. To use biblical terms, he expiated sin and propitiated the wrath of God, justifying his people, sanctifying them through his heavenly intercession by sending his Spirit to work in them, and will one day glorify them making them perfect to rule and reign with him forever. It is one thing to understand the various historical narratives concerning these truths in the Gospels, but it is another thing altogether to consider how Jesus saw himself in the Gospels. This work investigates Christ’s interpretation of the phrase “Son of Man” as found in the book of Daniel, (7:13) and applied to himself throughout the Gospels. Though the phrase “Son of Man” is seen in various Old Testament books and used for a variety of purposes, Christ’s use is specific in its reference to Daniel and his own description. In this way a question becomes important as it relates to Christ’s self-disclosure, “Do you see Christ as Christ saw himself? Do you see Christ clearly?”

John Piper has devoted his life to showing us that the glory of God is object of the soul’s happiness. Now, his burden in this book is to demonstrate that this same glory is the ground of the mind’s certainty. God’s peculiar glory shines through his Word. The Spirit of God enlightens the eyes of our hearts. And in one self-authenticating sight, our minds are sure and our hearts are satisfied. Justified certainty and solid joy meet in the peculiar glory of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When anyone acts in accordance with the devil, they become of a “devilish quality,” (John 6:70). When Christians are enticed by the devil, they are pulled away from God by honors, profits, pleasures, or whatever other things the devil uses to hinder their profiting by the Word, (Luke 8:12). These wicked spirits have such a heinous effect on the world, that the same condemnation that will befall them, will befall those who follow them. The proud fall into the condemnation of the devil, that is, by means of pride and high mindedness they too will be cast into hell fire, in the same manner as the devil will be. In consideration of such vile and wicked practices following the devil and his practices, Gifford directs the reader to resist such assaults and submit before God with the weapon of steadfast faith. His text is a famous one, “Be sober and watch: for your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist steadfast in the faith,” (1 Peter 5:8-9). Gifford expounds on how the Apostle Peter, 1) begins with an admonition or exhortation by which he stirs up all the faithful to sobriety and watchfulness with these words, “Be sober and watch,” 2) why it is important to move all men into this position of sobriety and watchfulness, seeing they have such a terrible and cruel adversary who continually seeks their eternal misery and destruction, “For your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” And, 3) teaching how Christians shall withstand him, overcome him, and put him to flight, that so they may escape from his cruel tyranny, “Whom resist steadfast in the faith.” This is an exceedingly helpful work, that will arm the Christian in due manner to fight steadfastly in the power of Jesus Christ through his Spirit against the works and wiles of the devil. And Gifford will not only show how to do this, but how to do it effectively, with victory, through true Christian faith empowered by God’s Christ.

Aside from the thief on the cross who hung there next to the Christ, Manasseh is the “other” near deathbed convert that one finds in Scripture. Manasseh ought to hold a special place to two kinds of people who read the Bible. The first is the sinner who thinks they have sins that are bigger than Christ is a Savior. They are timid to come to the Savior, believing that God might not save such a lost person as they are. And the second are believers who wonder how their sinning after conversion affects their standing before God, robbing them of the full assurance of faith that they should have in Christ. God worked in the life of one of the most wretched people who ever lived, and the narrative in 2 Chronicles 33 shows how a despicable heathenish dog can be converted and changed by the abundant power of Jesus Christ through the Covenant of God’s free Grace. As wicked as Manasseh might have been, God still reached down from heaven to change him, save him, reconcile him, and begin reformation not only of his own life, but life in the church at large. Consider that God saved a wretch like Manasseh from sin and hell, as abominable as he was, and abundantly pardoned him through saving grace only found in Jesus Christ. Such a truth should give sinners hope and give Christians a reason to cultivate a greater amount of godly assurance as they walk through the journey of this life before the face of God. Study Questions follow at the end of the work.

Book excerpt: In The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind (1994) Mark Noll offered a forthrightly critical assessment of the state of evangelical thinking and scholarship. Now, nearly twenty years later, in a sequel more attuned to possibilities than to problems, Noll updates his earlier assessment and charts a positive way forward for evangelical scholarship. Noll's Jesus Christ and the Life of the Mind shows how the orthodox Christology confessed in the ancient Christian creeds, far from hindering or discouraging serious scholarship, can supply the motives, guidance, and framework for learning. Christian faith, Noll argues, can richly enhance intellectual engagement in the various academic disciplines -- and he demonstrates how by applying his insights to the fields of history (his own area of expertise), science, and biblical studies in particular. In a substantial postscript Noll candidly addresses the question How fares the "evangelical mind" today? as he highlights "hopeful signs" of intellectual life in a host of evangelical institutions, individuals, and movements. -- From publisher description.
