Book Synopsis The Natural History of Primates by : Robert W. Sussman
Download or read book The Natural History of Primates written by Robert W. Sussman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest in primates, from lemurs to gorillas, has never been greater. Primatologists are continually finding evidence in the behavior and ecology of our closest genetic relatives that sheds light on human origins. So, just who are these 520+ species of complex and intelligent mammals inhabiting the Neotropics, Africa, Madagascar, and Asia? The Natural History of Primates provides the most current information on wild primates from experts who have studied them in their natural environments. This volume provides up-to-date facts and figures on how groups of social primates interact with each other and the plants and other animal species in their ecosystems: what they eat, which predators might eat them, how males and females seek mates, how infants are raised, and myriad other fascinating details about their visual and vocal communication, their ability to craft and use tools, and the varieties of locomotion they employ. As human populations continue to expand into the rainforests, savannas, and woodlands where nonhuman primates dwell, the preservation of these species becomes ever more important. The Natural History of Primates is unique in its emphasis on the conservation status of primate species and its ample discussions of how humans and nonhuman primates can coexist in the twenty-first century.

Book Synopsis Primates in Fragments by : Laura K. Marsh
Download or read book Primates in Fragments written by Laura K. Marsh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was created initially from a symposium of the same name presented at the International Primatological Society's XVIII Congress in Adelaide. South Australia. 6-12 January 2000. Many of the authors who have contributed to this text could not attend the symposium. so this has become another vehicle for the rapidly growing discipline of Fragmentation Science among primatologists. Fragmentation has quickly become a field separate from general ecology. which underscores the severity of the situation since we as a planet are rapidly losing habitat of all types to human disturbance. Getting ecologists. particularly primatologists. to admit that they study in fragments is not easy. In the field of primatology. one studies many things. but rarely do those things (genetics. behavior. population dynamics) get called out as studies in fragmentation. For some reason "fragmentation primatologists" fear that our work is somehow "not as good" as those who study in continuous habitat. We worry that perhaps our subjects are not demonstrating as robust behaviors as they "should" given fragmented or disturbed habitat conditions. I had a colleague openly state that she did not work in fragmented forests. that she merely studied behavior when it was clear that her study sites. everyone of them. was isolated habitat. Our desire to be just another link in the data chain for wild primates is so strong that it makes us deny what kinds of habitats we are working in. However.
Book Synopsis The Biology of Snub-nosed Monkeys, Douc Langurs, Proboscis Monkeys, and Simakobu by : Cyril C. Grueter
Download or read book The Biology of Snub-nosed Monkeys, Douc Langurs, Proboscis Monkeys, and Simakobu written by Cyril C. Grueter and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the Colobinae, the genera Rhinopithecus (snub-nosed monkeys), Pygathrix (douc langurs) and Nasalis (proboscis monkeys and simakobus) are informally grouped as the odd-nosed monkeys. While these genera comprise an eclectic mix featuring remarkable natural histories, this ecologically diverse group previously received little attention from the scientific community. In the last decade, however, a plethora of new and exciting research has occurred on these understudied colobines. In this book, we present a summary and synthesis of this new knowledge, looking to compare across taxa and scientific disciplines and generate in-depth discussion of what odd-nosed monkeys can tell us about the unity and diversity of the primates as a whole. This review follows the central themes of primatology and covers topics as diverse as taxonomy and phylogeny, functional morphology, spatial and dietary ecology, activity patterns, social organisation, life histories and ends with an overview of the conservation status of these enthralling and endangered primates.

Book Synopsis Monkeys of the Taï Forest by : W. Scott McGraw
Download or read book Monkeys of the Taï Forest written by W. Scott McGraw and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-10 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great deal has been written about primates; however few volumes have focused on an entire community of sympatric monkeys at a single site. Drawing upon diverse sets of data, the authors provide a multi-thematic case study of the entire monkey community of the Taï forest (Ivory Coast). Much of the book explores how the seven monkey species have adapted to hunting pressures from chimpanzees, leopards, crowned eagles and humans. Other themes covered include feeding ecology, social behaviour, positional behaviour and habitat use, vocal communication and conservation. Colour photographs of all species are provided, showing the major behavioural characteristics of each, as little is known about these West African monkeys. This scientifically important volume will be of interest to a broad audience including primatologists, functional anatomists, psychologists, and behavioural ecologists.
Download or read book The Colobines written by Ikki Matsuda and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colobines are a group of Afroeurasian monkeys that exhibit extraordinary behavioural and ecological diversity. With long tails and diverse colourations, they are medium-sized primates, mostly arboreal, that are found in many different habitats, from rain forests and mountain forests to mangroves and savannah. Over the last two decades, our understanding of this group of primates has increased dramatically. This volume presents a comprehensive overview of the current research on colobine populations, including the range of biological, ecological, behavioural and societal traits they exhibit. It highlights areas where our knowledge is still lacking, and outlines the current conservation status of colobine populations, exploring the threats to their survival. Bringing together international experts, this volume will aid future conservation efforts and encourage further empirical studies. It will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in primatology, biological anthropology and conservation science. Additional online resources can be found at www.cambridge.org/colobines.
Book Synopsis Nutrient Requirements of Nonhuman Primates by : National Research Council
Download or read book Nutrient Requirements of Nonhuman Primates written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new release presents the wealth of information gleaned about nonhuman primates nutrition since the previous edition was published in 1978. With expanded coverage of natural dietary habits, gastrointestinal anatomy and physiology, and the nutrient needs of species that have been difficult to maintain in captivity, it explores the impact on nutrition of physiological and life-stage considerations: infancy, weaning, immune function, obesity, aging, and more. The committee also discusses issues of environmental enrichment such as opportunities for foraging. Based on the world's scientific literature and input from authoritative sources, the book provides best estimates of nutrient requirements. The volume covers requirements for energy: carbohydrates, including the role of dietary fiber; proteins and amino acids; fats and fatty acids; minerals, fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins; and water. The book also analyzes the composition of important foods and feed ingredients and offers guidelines on feed processing and diet formulation.
