Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Mexican Rattlesnakes Beginning in November, 1966, studies on rattlesnakes (genera Crotalus and Sistrurus) and other pit Vipers were initiated at the Dallas Zoo which included techniques for maintenance and disease treatments, in conjunction with Observations on captive and wild populations. Maintenance techniques and disease treatments have been published in an earlier contribution. The results of our studies on the ecology and natural history of Mexican rattlesnakes are contained in the present account. Since numerous behavioral sequences were difficult to record in the field, many rattlesnakes were maintained in the laboratory. Over one hundred and twenty-five captive individuals, comprising over 50 taxa (including forms indigenous to the United States) were avail able for study. We have attempted to Show the value of a multifaceted ap proach to the study of a body of organisms by beginning with field Observations as a basis for understanding, followed by maintenance in the captive state whereupon specimens can be placed upon death in a systematic museum collection. This arrangement allows an investigator to examine various aspects of an animal's being by recording data which would be virtually impossible to record in the field. Further, this combined approach maximized our abili ties as one Of us is somewhat incompetent in the field and the other is an erratic animal keeper. Book excerpt: They stir up feelings of fear and fascination, and even people uninterested in snakes pause to hear the often incredible accounts of rattler sightings. Replace that shiver of nervousness with knowledge of these extraordinary creatures-their physical characteristics, habits and habitats, origins and evolution, interaction with humans, and species breakdown. Roughly 4 feet long and capable of swallowing their prey entirely, rattlesnakes represent the pinnacle of reptile development. They deal out death in the blink of an eye. Find out why they shed their skins, the reasons for their various colorations, information about their reproductive cycle, and facts about the rattles themselves. Glorious color photos bring you up close and personal -- as close as you'll ever want to get to a rattlesnake! Gaze at the blue cast over the eyes of certain breeds, the purplish flicking tongue, the venom-ducts and glands, their skin texture, the consumption of a meal, and a snake blending with its environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This virtual encyclopedia of the rattlesnake became a natural history sensation when it was first published in 1956. The republication of the Second Edition, with a new foreword by Harry W. Greene, will give amateur and professional herpetologists alike reason to rejoice. Volume 1 covers taxonomy, physiology, and behavior; Volume 2 concentrates on the rattlesnake's interactions with other organisms, including humans. Klauber's detailed and thorough study is still one of the most complete rattlesnake references ever published.Greene's Foreword discusses the initial impact and continuing value of Klauber's work and recounts some of the advances in knowledge of rattlesnake biology during the past 25 years. Also included is an update of rattlesnake taxonomy.
