The tests were designed to determine thecapability of these systems to control emissions of dioxins, other traceorganics, metals and acid gases. Field testing was completed inAugust/September, 1985, for two different designs: one using a wet-dryscrubber plus fabric filter and the other using a dry scrubber plus fabricfilter. Many different operating conditions were tested to identify optimum removal efficiencies for all pollutants of concern. Final resultswere very significant. Fluid gas temperature was found to be an importantoperating variable for achieving high removal efficiency for many of thepollutants measured.

Book excerpt: The objectives of the National Incinerator Testing and Evaluation Program (NITEP) were to define optimal design and operating characteristics for different types of municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerators, relate the defined operations to atmospheric emissions, identify the best options to control emissions, and develop guidelines for the operation of MSW incinerators and for emissions. This report provides a summary of the facilities tested under the NITEP ash characterization program, the experimental approach used to evaluate the residues, and the type of data generated. The data have been compiled and presented to illustrate significant trends and to show how these trends relate to the guidelines for ash management. The feasibility of using solidification as an acceptable treatment technique for these residues is also presented.

Book excerpt: The Parkdale (P.E.I.) energy-from-waste plant consists of threetwo-stage controlled air combustion incinerators with flue gasheat recovery. The field tests were divided into two parts:characterization, to develop an understanding of the incineratoroperation, and performance, to examine the effects of variousoperating conditions on emissions from the incinerator. Parameters examined during characterization testing were primaryand secondary chamber temperatures, ram cycles, and refuseloading rate and frequency. The main process variable adjustedduring the performance tests was secondary chamber temperature. Emissions of concern were organics, including dioxins/furans;acid gases; particulates; and metals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the environmental characterization of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) semi-suspension burning technology at a state-of-the-art incinerator facility in Connecticut. Includes a description of the test program, the incinerator facility (site, incineration process, RDF preparation & handling, steam generating system, air pollution control system), sampling & analytical protocols, and test results. Results were obtained for a variety of steam production rates, combustion conditions, flue gas temperatures, and acid gas removal efficiencies. All incoming wastes and resulting ash residues were weighed, sampled, and analyzed, and key incinerator and pollution control system variables were monitored real-time. A wide range of analyses for acid gases, trace organics, and heavy metals was conducted on the gas emissions and ash discharges. Appendices include details on the test conditions and results.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was introduced on December 2, 1970 by President Richard Nixon. The agency is charged with protecting human health and the environment, by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress. The EPA's struggle to protect health and the environment is seen through each of its official publications. These publications outline new policies, detail problems with enforcing laws, document the need for new legislation, and describe new tactics to use to solve these issues. This collection of publications ranges from historic documents to reports released in the new millennium, and features works like: Bicycle for a Better Environment, Health Effects of Increasing Sulfur Oxides Emissions Draft, and Women and Environmental Health.
