Download or read book Ecuador written by David W. Schodt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A country often neglected in discussions of Latin America, Ecuador offers intriguing insights into the interwoven patterns of continuity and change characteristic of the region. In this introduction to Ecuador, Dr. Schodt begins with a discussion of culture and geography—especially critical for understanding this country, where the physical partitioning by the Andes has had profound economic and political consequences and where cultural and linguistic differences further divide the population. The author then considers Ecuador's early history, emphasizing the importance of patterns imposed by regionalism and structured by the nation's colonial heritage. This leads to a discussion of the cacao and banana booms—and of the consequences of these periods of economic bonanza for domestic politics—that focuses on the expansion of the electorate and the emergence of two competing populist movements. In the final chapters, Dr. Schodt examines the political and economic implications of the petroleum boom, emphasizing the growing role of the state in the Ecuadorian economy. This analysis of the petroleum period concludes with a discussion of Ecuador's prospects for the future, taking account of the conjuncture of the dramatic increase in Ecuador's external indebtedness that took place in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the election in 1984 of a government committed to reversing the growth of state intervention in the economy, and the sharp decline in 1986 in the world price of petroleum.

Book Synopsis New Communication Technologies in Developing Countries by : Jarice Hanson
Download or read book New Communication Technologies in Developing Countries written by Jarice Hanson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores how a number of developing countries -- including India, Malaysia, Columbia, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia -- are responding to the pressures of the information society. Infrastructural development, policies, and social systems are investigated, and models of information technologies and society are proposed in order to better reference the differences and similarities among the nations profiled. The authors identify the social technology perspective via the assimilation of technology in lifestyles and social systems. From this perspective, the diffusion of technologies is analyzed with a critical eye for theories of culture lag, diffusion and innovation, and technological determinism and liberalism. The social perspective is a new addition to development studies, and the reader may see how, as the global information society comes into focus, the social dimensions are more important than some theorists originally envisioned.
Book Synopsis Agricultural Progress in Ecuador, 1970-82 by : Samuel R. Ruff
Download or read book Agricultural Progress in Ecuador, 1970-82 written by Samuel R. Ruff and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: The petroleum bonanza that transformed Ecuador's economy after 1970 increased per capita income and funded agricultural development. Higher incomes increased demand for foods which had to be filled by imports, most of which came from the United States. The United States was the major market for expanding agricultural exports. Production of export-oriented crops--cocoa, bananas, and coffee--was stimulated by high world prices and government renovation policies. Imported breeding cattle and growth of a poultry industry sharply increased livestock production. Projects were begun to irrigate the large areas in the coastal plain in the eighties.
Book Synopsis Dilemmas of Difference by : Sarah A. Radcliffe
Download or read book Dilemmas of Difference written by Sarah A. Radcliffe and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dilemmas of Difference Sarah A. Radcliffe explores the relationship of rural indigenous women in Ecuador to the development policies and actors that are ostensibly there to help ameliorate social and economic inequality. Radcliffe finds that development policies’s inability to recognize and reckon with the legacies of colonialism reinforces long-standing social hierarchies, thereby reproducing the very poverty and disempowerment they are there to solve. This ineffectiveness results from failures to acknowledge the local population's diversity and a lack of accounting for the complex intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, class, and geography. As a result, projects often fail to match beneficiaries' needs, certain groups are made invisible, and indigenous women become excluded from positions of authority. Drawing from a mix of ethnographic fieldwork and postcolonial and social theory, Radcliffe centers the perspectives of indigenous women to show how they craft practices and epistemologies that critique ineffective development methods, inform their political agendas, and shape their strategic interventions in public policy debates.
