Book excerpt: New York's Southern Tier Region is experiencing high growth and investment in the clean energy sector and is anticipating more jobs to come in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and manufacturing in the coming years. The Network for a Sustainable Tomorrow (NEST) is a nonprofit network of programs working to develop a regional backbone system for education and training programs as well as curricula to support the workforce needed for the region's growing industries to succeed. Through its participation in the US Department of Energy's Better Buildings Workforce Accelerator, NEST requested technical assistance in conducting a landscape and needs assessment of the region's existing clean energy education and workforce development assets. This report supports NEST's efforts by providing a baseline of clean energy employment data, an inventory and gap analysis of the education and workforce development assets currently available and serving the Southern Tier Region, and case studies of innovative and successful regional clean energy education and workforce coalitions from around the county.

This book was released on 2017-06-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skilled technical occupationsâ€"defined as occupations that require a high level of knowledge in a technical domain but do not require a bachelor's degree for entryâ€"are a key component of the U.S. economy. In response to globalization and advances in science and technology, American firms are demanding workers with greater proficiency in literacy and numeracy, as well as strong interpersonal, technical, and problem-solving skills. However, employer surveys and industry and government reports have raised concerns that the nation may not have an adequate supply of skilled technical workers to achieve its competitiveness and economic growth objectives. In response to the broader need for policy information and advice, Building America's Skilled Technical Workforce examines the coverage, effectiveness, flexibility, and coordination of the policies and various programs that prepare Americans for skilled technical jobs. This report provides action-oriented recommendations for improving the American system of technical education, training, and certification.

Book Synopsis Accelerating Decarbonization of the U.S. Energy System by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Accelerating Decarbonization of the U.S. Energy System written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by . This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is transforming its energy system from one dominated by fossil fuel combustion to one with net-zero emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary anthropogenic greenhouse gas. This energy transition is critical to mitigating climate change, protecting human health, and revitalizing the U.S. economy. To help policymakers, businesses, communities, and the public better understand what a net-zero transition would mean for the United States, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine convened a committee of experts to investigate how the U.S. could best decarbonize its transportation, electricity, buildings, and industrial sectors. This report, Accelerating Decarbonization of the United States Energy System, identifies key technological and socio-economic goals that must be achieved to put the United States on the path to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The report presents a policy blueprint outlining critical near-term actions for the first decade (2021-2030) of this 30-year effort, including ways to support communities that will be most impacted by the transition.
Book Synopsis Putting Renewables to Work by : Daniel M. Kammen
Download or read book Putting Renewables to Work written by Daniel M. Kammen and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Apollo Energy Project, by coordinating public and private policies and investments, provides the vision for a cleaner, domestically-based, and more secure 21st century energy system. This report provides an invaluable comparison of the many recent studies that show how a shift towards clean energy technologies will result in significant job creation. These studies confirm that supporting renewable and efficient energy systems will create more American jobs than would a comparable investment in traditional fossil fuel based systems. Moreover, an investment agenda in emerging clean energy technologies would also reduce our foreign trade deficit and reestablish the U.S. as a leader in this growing international market. Book Synopsis Enhancing State Clean Energy Workforce Training to Meet Demand. Issue Brief by : Devashree Saha
Download or read book Enhancing State Clean Energy Workforce Training to Meet Demand. Issue Brief written by Devashree Saha and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent state policy and federal funding initiatives are driving the demand for clean energy in both the short and long term. This increased demand has created the need for many more workers trained or retrained in a variety of clean energy jobs. In response, states are utilizing funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) to expand existing workforce training efforts and to create new programs that will meet the demand. ARRA funding provides an opportunity for states to build upon and expand existing workforce efforts now and to develop innovative solutions that can help sustain their progress in the future, beyond the end of ARRA funding. Many strategies are similar to those used for other sectors. In addition, states are developing new ways to partner with a diverse set of players, leverage private sector resources, and make workforce training more accessible. (Contains 40 notes.).
Book Synopsis Energizing America by : Varun Sivaram

Book excerpt: Clean energy innovation is central to the fight against climate change. To rise to this challenge, the United States should launch a National Energy Innovation Mission. Led by the president and authorized by Congress, this mission should harness the nation's unmatched innovative capabilities-at research universities, federal laboratories, and private firms (both large and small), in all regions of the country-to speed the progress of clean energy technologies. To jumpstart this mission and unlock a virtuous cycle of public and private investment, the US federal government should triple its funding for energy research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) over the next five years to $25 billion by 2025. "Energizing America" offers policymakers a strategic framework to build a growing RD&D portfolio over the next five years, detailed fundingproposals across the full spectrum of critical energy technologies, and recommendations for immediate action.

Book Synopsis Energy Democracy by : Denise Fairchild
Download or read book Energy Democracy written by Denise Fairchild and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The near-unanimous consensus among climate scientists is that the massive burning of gas, oil, and coal is having cataclysmic impacts on our atmosphere and climate. These climate and environmental impacts are particularly magnified and debilitating for low-income communities and communities of color. Energy democracy tenders a response and joins the environmental and climate movement with broader movements for social and economic change in this country and around the world. Energy Democracy brings together racial, cultural, and generational perspectives to show what an alternative, democratized energy future can look like. The book will inspire others to take up the struggle to build the energy democracy movement.
Book Synopsis Hydrogen and Fuel Cells by : International Energy Agency
Download or read book Hydrogen and Fuel Cells written by International Energy Agency and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogen and fuel cells are vital technologies to ensure a secure and CO2-free energy future. Their development will take decades of extensive public and private effort to achieve technology breakthroughs and commercial maturity. Government research programs are indispensable for catalyzing the development process. This report maps the IEA countries' current efforts to research, develop and deploy the interlocking elements that constitute a "hydrogen economy", including CO2 capture and storage when hydrogen is produced out of fossil fuels. It provides an overview of what is being done, and by whom, covering an extensive complexity of national government R & D programs. The survey highlights the potential for exploiting the benefits of the international cooperation. This book draws primarily upon information contributed by IEA governments. In virtually all the IEA countries, important R & D and policy efforts on hydrogen and fuel cells are in place and expanding. Some are fully-integrated, government-funded programs, some are a key element in an overall strategy spread among multiple public and private efforts. The large amount of information provided in this publication reflects the vast array of technologies and logistics required to build the "hydrogen economy."--Publisher description.
