Book Synopsis Archives and Records by : Mikuláš Čtvrtník
Download or read book Archives and Records written by Mikuláš Čtvrtník and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book addresses the protection of privacy and personality rights in public records, records management, historical sources, and archives; and historical and current access to them in a broad international comparative perspective. Considering the question "can archiving pose a security risk to the protection of sensitive data and human rights?", it analyses data security and presents several significant cases of the misuse of sensitive personal data, such as census data or medical records. It examines archival inflation and the minimisation and reduction of data in public records and archives, including data anonymisation and pseudonymisation, and the risks of deanonymisation and reidentification of persons. The book looks at post-mortem privacy protection, the relationship of the right to know and the right to be forgotten and introduces a specific model of four categories of the right to be forgotten. In its conclusion, the book presents a set of recommendations for archives and records management. Mikulas Ctvrtnik, Ph.D. visiting assistant professor at Charles University in Prague, and assistant professor at Jan Evangelista Purkyne University in Usti nad Labem. Author of several monographs, including Geschichte der Geschichtswissenschaft: Der tschechische Historiker Zdenek Kalista und die Tradition der deutschen Geistesgeschichte published in Germany; his latest book discusses intellectual history in the context of European historiography of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Book excerpt: National Archives store materials relating to the history of a nation, usually operated by the government of that nation. This is the first ever comprehensive source of information about national archives around the world covers the national archives of all 195 countries recognized by the United Nations (the 193 member states and the 2 that non-member observer states: The Holy See and the State of Palestine) as well as Taiwan (Republic of China). Of the 196 countries, 54 are in Africa, 49 in Asia, 44 in Europe, 33 in Latin America and the Caribbean, 14 in Oceania, and 2 in Northern America. All countries maintain a repository for government and historical records; whether all allow public access will be determined through research for this work. The National Archives of all 196 countries will be included in this work (see Appendix A). Each entry contains: general information about the archive and when it is open to researchers (if applicable), historical information about the institution and how it developed, information about the archives today (its mission, functions, organization, services, and a description of its physical and digital infrastructures), and a current focus section spotlighting one part of the collection’s holdings.
Book Synopsis National Archives: Progress and Risks in Implementing Its Electronic Records Archive Initiative by : David A. Powner
Download or read book National Archives: Progress and Risks in Implementing Its Electronic Records Archive Initiative written by David A. Powner and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2001, the Nat. Archives and Records Admin. (NARA) has been working to develop a modern Electronic Records Archive (ERA) system, a major info. system that is intended to preserve and provide access to massive volumes of all types and formats of electronic records. Software and contracting problems led the agency and its contractor to revise the development approach. The revised plan called for parallel development of two different increments: a "base" ERA system with limited functionality and an Exec. Office of the Pres. (EOP) system to support the ingestion and search of records from the outgoing Bush Admin. This report summarizes NARA's progress in developing the ERA system and the ongoing risks the agency faces in completing it.
