Download or read book Free for All written by Kenneth Turan and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free for All is an irresistible behind-the-scenes look at one of America’s most beloved and important cultural institutions. Under the inspired leadership of founder Joseph Papp, the Public Theater and the New York Shakespeare Festival brought revolutionary performances to the public for decades. This compulsively readable history of those years—much of it told in Papp’s own words—is fascinating, ranging from a dramatic early showdown with Robert Moses over keeping Shakespeare in the Park free to the launching of such landmark productions as Hair and A Chorus Line. To bring the story to life, film critic Kenneth Turan interviewed some 160 luminaries—including George C. Scott, Meryl Streep, Mike Nichols, Kevin Kline, James Earl Jones, David Rabe, Jerry Stiller, Tommy Lee Jones, and Wallace Shawn—and masterfully weaves their voices into a dizzyingly rich tale of creativity, conflict, and achievement.

Download or read book Charles Dickens's The Mystery of Edwin Drood written by Don Richard Cox and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of Dickens' sudden death in 1870, he had completed six of the 12 monthly installments of Edwin Drood. Anxious readers on both sides of the Atlantic were stranded with what Don Richard Cox calls, the most popular unfinished novel ever written. Speculation about the book's conclusion soon began and, as the years have passed, literally scores of authors have tried their hands at completing the story, writing their own sequels, conclusions, parodies and alternative endings. There have been dozens of stage, radio, film and television versions as well. Mock trials have sought a legal solution to the puzzle, and even spiritualists have tried to contact the ghost of Dickens, hoping to discover what the author's plans really were.

In an opulent apartment overlooking Central Park, former movie star Julie and her sister-in-law Faye bring their families together for a traditional holiday dinner on a night when things don't go as planned. Book excerpt: Dylan isn't your typical snooker player. He's a vegetarian, for starters. This is the biggest week of his life and everybody wants a piece of him – his ex-con Dad, local gangster Waxy Chuff and the snooker corruption squad. The Nap is a laugh out loud comedy thriller about love, honour and not getting snookered. It centres around Dylan Spokes, a professional snooker player, born and raised in Sheffield. Dylan is preparing for a big match, but not only are his friends and family getting in the way, but he is visited by police investigating match fixing. The Nap is a farce by award-winning playwright, Richard Bean, with plenty of sharp lines, jokes and an array of hilarious characters. The play includes a live snooker match, with comic commentary. It opened at the Sheffield Crucible in 2016 and later on Broadway by the Manhattan Theatre Club.
