Book excerpt: I had always believed in the healing power of our Lord, and viewed my life as one of service to Him via the practice of medicine. But, in retrospect, I had a deeper trust in the power of modern medicine and science than I did in Jesus Christ and His fully accomplished work on the Cross. My thinking was flawed, but, as I grew in my walk with the Lord and meditated on Scripture more fully, I began to see the superiority of faith over the limited interventions modern medical science had to offer, and that this interplay between faith and science was not mutually exclusive, but complimentary, for the spiritual aspects of our lives illuminate and empower the carnal aspects of intellect and physical senses. I began jotting notes to myself related to this interplay of faith and healing and science, and just filed them away...for years. IThen, in December of 2017, a baby was born to a first time mother of mine, his little body riddled with the most fulminant form of acute lymphoblasic leukemia, almost always fatal. His absolutely miraculous healing was the impetus to start putting these thoughts into writing, in the form of weekday morning emails entitled “A Christian Doctor’s View of Healing, Faiith, and Science”. It was soon made clear to me that these writings were to take the form of a year long devotional book, comprised of short weekday messages that are intimately linked, such that they can be read through as a book. And that book was to paint a picture, and that picture was to be of a face, and the face was to be that of Jesus, for He is the source of all healing

Book excerpt: Musings on Medicine, Myth, and History: India's Legacy is a collection of fourteen short essays. It presents a holistic view of ancient medical history and Indian developments in ophthalmology, the authors' medical specialty. Deep respect for their homeland is apparent, as is their concern for sighted and visually impaired patients at home in the United States or on service trips abroad. Readers may be surprised to learn that cataract surgery was first described and performed in India nearly three thousand years ago. Much of current practice in ophthalmology can be traced to medical pioneers in Ancient India. This book is sure to broaden your perspective of India's contributions to modern health care. But also, in the process, you will become better acquainted with many other aspects of India, which was once the world's leading economic "superpower."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Randomized controlled trials are one of the most powerful and revolutionary tools of research. This book is a convenient and accessible description of the underlying principles and practice of randomized controlled trials and their role in clinical decision-making. Structured in a jargon-free question-and-answer format, each chapter provides concise and understandable information on a different aspect of randomized controlled trials, from the basics of trial design and terminology to the interpretation of results and their use in driving evidence-based medicine. The authors end each chapter with their musings, going beyond the evidence or citations, and sometimes even beyond orthodox correctness to share their thoughts and concerns about different aspects of randomized controlled trials, and their role within the health system. Updated to include insights from the last decade, this second edition challenges over-reliance on randomized controlled trials by debating their strengths and limitations and discussing their optimal use in modern healthcare. It also includes a new and increasingly relevant chapter on the ethics of randomized trials. World renowned writers and thinkers Drs Jadad and Enkin bring you this invaluable book for busy health professionals who wish to understand the theory of randomized controlled trials and their influence on clinical, research or policy decisions.

Some 40% of all Earthlings now suffer from this condition which covers the gamut of Heart Disease, Cancer, Neurodegeneration, Liver disease, and PCOS. What is worth knowing is that ALL of these and related conditions start with Fatigue, known in scientific circles as "energy deficiency." 40% of the Earth's population has a formal clinical diagnosis that their mitochondria cannot make adequate levels of energy. [Cu]re Fatigue is a book devoted to educating the masses and their doctors exactly how and why this is happening. Our mitochondria make energy by a series of enzymes to work synergistically to create ATP, the cellular currency of energy. These mitochondrial enzyme reactions rely on minerals that are easily lost to stress. This book explains these concepts, how these challenges can be overcome and introduces the reader to a simple, proven Root Cause Protocol that is designed to generate more energy and end fatigue. This book is designed for those seeking the truth in human metabolism and those wanting to take back control of their health. It is one part textbook and one part user's guide based on a decade of research and client experience.

Book excerpt: Doctors are taught how to cure people. But they don’t always know how to care for them. Hardly anyone is happy with American healthcare these days. Patients are getting sicker and going bankrupt from medical bills. Doctors are burning out and making dangerous mistakes. Both parties blame our nation’s outdated and dysfunctional healthcare system. But that’s only part of the problem. In this important and timely book, Dr. Robert Pearl shines a light on the unseen and often toxic culture of medicine. Today’s physicians have a surprising disdain for technology, an unhealthy obsession with status, and an increasingly complicated relationship with their patients. All of this can be traced back to their earliest experiences in medical school, where doctors inherit a set of norms, beliefs, and expectations that shape almost every decision they make, with profound consequences for the rest of us. Uncaring draws an original and revealing portrait of what it’s actually like to be a doctor. It illuminates the complex and intimidating world of medicine for readers, and in the end offers a clear plan to save American healthcare.

Book excerpt: Musings of a Madman is a compilation of poetry stretching from a meager existence in New York's East Village, with Allen Ginsberg and other such poets to Paris, and environs and finally Colombia. The poems sketch a life style of a lonely man to a final relationship with Adriana, muse, Colombian Princessa and finally wife and a life in Westchester as a jazz musician and poet. It is an dilemma of the very guts of the creative mind with its madness, its hunger its suffering, culminating in a crescendo within existence where the end justify the means. The poems are extremely diverse, some easygoing, some serious, most devouring the beauty of life and its prize and pain, yet all capturing the verve and passion of Greenwich Village in the early 60's.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Patients and doctors alike are keenly aware that the medical world is in the midst of great change. We live in an era of continuous healthcare reforms, many of which focus on high volume, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This compelling, thoughtful book is the response of a practicing physician who explains how population-based reforms are diminishing the relationship between doctor and patients, to the detriment of both. As an antidote to stubbornly held traditions, Dr. Abraham M. Nussbaum suggests ways that doctors and patients can learn what it means to be ill and to seek medical assistance. Drawing on personal stories, validated studies, and neglected history, the author develops a series of metaphors to explore a doctor's role in different healthcare reform scenarios: scientist, technician, author, gardener, teacher, servant, and witness. Each role shapes what physicians see when they encounter a patient. Dr. Nussbaum cautions that true healthcare reform can happen only when those who practice medicine can see, and be seen by, their patients as fellow creatures. His memoir makes a hopeful appeal for change, and his insights reveal the direction that change must take."--Jacket flap.

Book excerpt: The biggest problem in American health care is us Do you know how to tell good health care from bad health care? Guess again. As patients, we wrongly assume the "best" care is dependent mainly on the newest medications, the most complex treatments, and the smartest doctors. But Americans look for health-care solutions in the wrong places. For example, hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved each year if doctors reduced common errors and maximized preventive medicine. For Dr. Robert Pearl, these kinds of mistakes are a matter of professional importance, but also personal significance: he lost his own father due in part to poor communication and treatment planning by doctors. And consumers make costly mistakes too: we demand modern information technology from our banks, airlines, and retailers, but we passively accept last century's technology in our health care. Solving the challenges of health care starts with understanding these problems. Mistreated explains why subconscious misperceptions are so common in medicine, and shows how modifying the structure, technology, financing, and leadership of American health care could radically improve quality outcomes. This important book proves we can overcome our fears and faulty assumptions, and provides a roadmap for a better, healthier future.

Book excerpt: A stripper bitten by a venomous snake, a boy in suspended animation after collapsing in the snow, a woman who survived being run over by a train. These are some of the intriguing and baffling cases I have encountered in my medical career. I have never ceased to be amazed at the bewildering assortment of medical mysteries that have been thrown at me. Some were head scratchers, some were tragic, some amusing. Some defy explanation altogether. They have shown me that people are strange, conflicted, frail and remarkable creatures. They have also shown me how some patients, even when brought to their knees by their ailments, can courageously struggle back onto their feet. These experiences have taught me humility and caution. Faced with events I couldn't control and outcomes that defied all predictions, it often seemed that medicine was a series of traps designed to trip me up or, perhaps, a capricious gremlin whispering confusing advice in my ear and plotting to humiliate me.This collection of stories highlights the murky confusion that doctors face when confronted by the unexpected. They remind us that certainty in medicine is not assured and assumptions can be misleading. The practice of medicine, for better or worse, is a curious mix of science, art and divination and the results are never entirely predictable.
