Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015 the McCord Museum in Montreal, Canada, was gifted with the Allan Slaight Collection, one of the largest treasuries of posters and documents on magic in the world. Published in conjunction with the exhibition Illusions. The Art of Magic at the McCord Museum, this volume presents 250 exceptional posters from this collection, dating from the 1880s to the 1940s. During this period, known as the Golden Age of Magic, droves of traveling magicians and prestidigitators fought a veritable advertising war. All over the United States and Europe, city walls and billboards were plastered with posters offering tantalizing previews of their most spectacular tricks, giving poster designers and printers of the era a golden opportunity to flex their imaginations and load their work with devils and demons, skeletons and skulls, bodies and decapitated heads, playing-cards and rabbits, alluring assistants, phantasmagoria and esoteric symbols. Seven authors recognized as experts in their respective fields introduce this dazzling array of color and fantastic imagery, providing insights to explain the full historic, social and artistic value of these magnificent posters.

Book Synopsis Citizen Spectator by : Wendy Bellion
Download or read book Citizen Spectator written by Wendy Bellion and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this richly illustrated study, the first book-length exploration of illusionistic art in the early United States, Wendy Bellion investigates Americans' experiences with material forms of visual deception and argues that encounters with illusory art shaped their understanding of knowledge, representation, and subjectivity between 1790 and 1825. Focusing on the work of the well-known Peale family and their Philadelphia Museum, as well as other Philadelphians, Bellion explores the range of illusions encountered in public spaces, from trompe l'oeil paintings and drawings at art exhibitions to ephemeral displays of phantasmagoria, "Invisible Ladies," and other spectacles of deception. Bellion reconstructs the elite and vernacular sites where such art and objects appeared and argues that early national exhibitions doubled as spaces of citizen formation. Within a post-Revolutionary culture troubled by the social and political consequences of deception, keen perception signified able citizenship. Setting illusions into dialogue with Enlightenment cultures of science, print, politics, and the senses, Citizen Spectator demonstrates that pictorial and optical illusions functioned to cultivate but also to confound discernment. Bellion reveals the equivocal nature of illusion during the early republic, mapping its changing forms and functions, and uncovers surprising links between early American art, culture, and citizenship.
Book Synopsis Imperial Illusions by : Kristina Kleutghen
Download or read book Imperial Illusions written by Kristina Kleutghen and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Forbidden City and other palaces around Beijing, Emperor Qianlong (r. 1736-1795) surrounded himself with monumental paintings of architecture, gardens, people, and faraway places. The best artists of the imperial painting academy, including a number of European missionary painters, used Western perspectival illusionism to transform walls and ceilings with visually striking images that were also deeply meaningful to Qianlong. These unprecedented works not only offer new insights into late imperial China’s most influential emperor, but also reflect one way in which Chinese art integrated and domesticated foreign ideas. In Imperial Illusions, Kristina Kleutghen examines all known surviving examples of the Qing court phenomenon of “scenic illusion paintings” (tongjinghua), which today remain inaccessible inside the Forbidden City. Produced at the height of early modern cultural exchange between China and Europe, these works have received little scholarly attention. Richly illustrated, Imperial Illusions offers the first comprehensive investigation of the aesthetic, cultural, perceptual, and political importance of these illusionistic paintings essential to Qianlong’s world. Book Synopsis The Museum in Transition by : Hilde S. Hein
Download or read book The Museum in Transition written by Hilde S. Hein and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2000-09-17 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past thirty years, museums of all kinds have tried to become more responsive to the interests of a diverse public. With exhibitions becoming people-centered, idea-oriented, and contextualized, the boundaries between museums and the “real” world are eroding. Setting the transition from object-centered to story-centered exhibitions in a philosophical framework, Hilde S. Hein contends that glorifying the museum experience at the expense of objects deflects the museum's educative, ethical, and aesthetic roles. Referring to institutions ranging from art museums to theme parks, she shows how deployment has replaced amassing as a goal and discusses how museums now actively shape and create values.

Book Synopsis Art Museums in Modern Society by : Elena Polyudova
Download or read book Art Museums in Modern Society written by Elena Polyudova and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the process of transformation that is affecting art museums and their role in the modern world. It considers art museums from the perspectives of their social disposition, pedagogical practices, and the education they offer. The book embraces modern perspectives as a part of the international process where museums’ activities are transforming from the established traditional approach to more innovative methods, such as the digital environment, websites development, and social activities, among others. The volume is divided into three parts wherein museums are considered as agents of different spheres in society, pedagogy, and education. The transformation that modern museums have to accept is rooted in new challenges that society offers, and the book offers various examples that could be inspirational for developing new strategies for museums. It also features interviews with museum educators throughout the world in which they share their experience and vision on the questions presented here.
Book Synopsis France: Lille by : Laurence Phillips
Download or read book France: Lille written by Laurence Phillips and published by Bradt Travel Guides. This book was released on 2024-09-26 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New from Bradt is the thoroughly updated fifth edition of Lille, the award-winning and critically acclaimed guidebook to this exciting, ever-changing and easily accessible city in Hauts-de-France – the ultimate destination for a city break. Lille’s architecture blends the 16th-century cobbled streets typical of old Flanders and the imposing fortress and parks of Louis XIV’s France with converted former factories now serving as modern cultural venues. Here history refuses to stand still, and the city has not stopped finding new ways to celebrate its traditions, routinely toasting contemporary innovations. One of France’s leading centres for gastronomy, Lille constantly re-invents itself with ever more exciting places to eat – whether you share a sandwich with artists in a former post office building or seek out tomorrow’s Michelin-starred chefs – plus new places to explore, relax and stay. Being elected European Capital of Culture in 2004 led to Lille becoming one of France’s most cultural and artistic cities – and arguably its party capital too. With Bradt’s Lille, dance a Sunday-night tango with strangers in a Renaissance cloister, or order onion soup at dawn. You can admire France’s best art collection outside Paris, attend a biennial international arts festival or head for the amazing museums and sites in nearby towns, linked by an excellent metro and tram network. Alternatively, you might go shopping in Lille’s famous discount designer stores or at its legendary kerbside flea markets. Or venture beyond the city to discover the patchwork of history that characterises northern France, from Henry V’s battle of Agincourt to World War I trenches and the beaches of Dunkirk. New elements of this edition include a special feature on the Lille3000 international arts festival; coverage of self-drive possibilities, food festivals, World War tourist destinations, and both new and expanded museums and art galleries; and updated or wholly new reviews of the best places to eat, drink and stay (the latter now including self-catering options). With easy Eurostar access from the UK (plus high-speed train links from other French cities, and Brussels), Lille is the perfect short-haul getaway – with Bradt’s Lille guidebook the consummate companion.
Book Synopsis The Factive Turn in Epistemology by : Veli Mitova
Download or read book The Factive Turn in Epistemology written by Veli Mitova and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you believe something for a good reason, your belief is in a position to be justified, rational, responsible, or to count as knowledge. But what is the nature of this thing that can make such a difference? Traditionally, epistemologists thought of epistemic normative notions, such as reasons, in terms of the believer's psychological perspective. Recently, however, many have started thinking of them as factive: good reasons for belief are either facts, veridical experiences, or known propositions. This ground breaking volume reflects major recent developments in thinking about this 'factive turn', and advances the lively debate around it in relation to core epistemological themes including perception, evidence, justification, knowledge, scepticism, rationality, and action. With clear and comprehensive chapters written by leading figures in the field, this book will be essential for students and scholars looking to engage with the state of the art in epistemology.
