Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derek Rosenfeld's Travel Companion, Vol. 1 is a world where alternative consciousness is an option, though it is recommended. Do inquire that there is more to your journey than that which you seek, for any limitations could turn into regret. Taking it at face value could also lead to foolishness, and may cause the subject to appear dependent upon outside forces. You do not want such a reflection, or perhaps you do. Regardless, you are on a unique voyage, perhaps never realizing how unique, and should have all eyes and all ears and all heads open and aware of the endless number paths that are just asking to be traversed. Do not hesitate, do not ponder, but if you do, please do it in a timely fashion, and make sure it is done in a constructive matter. Just remember, go, because we all share the same end. And blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah…but what the hell do I know? I’m just a blob in a tie surrounded by five-foot walls, and it’s about time for me to go to lunch. And yes, I will have fries with that.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans are highly curious – we are eager to understand ourselves and the world around us, and we love the feeling of discovering something new. Some people choose to become scientists and devote their lives to exploring and understanding the laws of nature and life itself. A scientific understanding of the natural world is critical for developing new technologies and materials, and for curing devastating diseases. Every scientist makes discoveries that contribute to the constantly expanding body of human knowledge. Occasionally, scientists even discover entirely new phenomena that transform the way we understand the universe! Think of Albert Einstein’s famous theories, for example, or the pioneering work of Marie Skłodowska Curie, which led to the discovery of new elements and advanced the treatment of certain cancers. Indeed, her discovery of radioactivity paved the way for both the diagnosis via X-rays, and treatment of cancer via radiation therapy. Groundbreaking discoveries such as these usually result from a combination of knowledge, dedication, brilliance, and good luck. Each year, we celebrate these transformative discoveries by awarding Nobel Prizes in chemistry, physics, economics, and physiology or medicine. These prizes represent our highest-level recognition of the scientific accomplishments that have changed the world for the better. Now, in 2021 – exactly 120 years after the first Nobel Prize was awarded – we launch this special Nobel Collection in Frontiers for Young Minds. This Collection brings you articles by Nobel laureates, written specifically for young minds. In this first-of-its-kind collection, Nobel Prize winners explain their amazing discoveries and describe how they accomplished them. These Nobel laureates share their thoughts on research and what it means to be a scientist, and they even provide advice for becoming a successful researcher and living a happy, meaningful life. Like all Frontiers for Young Minds articles, these articles have been reviewed and approved by kids like you! Did you know that Nobel Prize winners and Young Minds readers have several important traits in common? The first is curiosity. The scientific journeys of Nobel laureates are often fueled by an intense, child-like curiosity – the same curiosity that motivates you to read these articles. Many Nobel laureates also manage to stay as open-minded as Young Minds readers – they keep their opinions flexible and can be persuaded to change their minds when new data challenges their existing beliefs. In the words of 2014 Nobel laureate May-Britt Moser, “I believe that it is important to maintain your curiosity about things, both now and as an adult, and find something that you have a passion for, that makes you enthusiastic and feel alive. For myself, I can say that I am very curious about things and that it is extremely important for me to understand things. It gives me so much pleasure when I understand something that I did not understand before - this is my leading star.” We hope that this unique new Collection will be your leading star – that it will help you to further develop your own curiosity and openness, and that it inspires you reach for new discoveries in your own life!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of human body measurements on a comparative basis is known as anthropometrics. Its applicability to the design process is seen in the physical fit, or interface, between the human body and the various components of interior space. Human Dimension and Interior Space is the first major anthropometrically based reference book of design standards for use by all those involved with the physical planning and detailing of interiors, including interior designers, architects, furniture designers, builders, industrial designers, and students of design. The use of anthropometric data, although no substitute for good design or sound professional judgment should be viewed as one of the many tools required in the design process. This comprehensive overview of anthropometrics consists of three parts. The first part deals with the theory and application of anthropometrics and includes a special section dealing with physically disabled and elderly people. It provides the designer with the fundamentals of anthropometrics and a basic understanding of how interior design standards are established. The second part contains easy-to-read, illustrated anthropometric tables, which provide the most current data available on human body size, organized by age and percentile groupings. Also included is data relative to the range of joint motion and body sizes of children. The third part contains hundreds of dimensioned drawings, illustrating in plan and section the proper anthropometrically based relationship between user and space. The types of spaces range from residential and commercial to recreational and institutional, and all dimensions include metric conversions. In the Epilogue, the authors challenge the interior design profession, the building industry, and the furniture manufacturer to seriously explore the problem of adjustability in design. They expose the fallacy of designing to accommodate the so-called average man, who, in fact, does not exist. Using government data, including studies prepared by Dr. Howard Stoudt, Dr. Albert Damon, and Dr. Ross McFarland, formerly of the Harvard School of Public Health, and Jean Roberts of the U.S. Public Health Service, Panero and Zelnik have devised a system of interior design reference standards, easily understood through a series of charts and situation drawings. With Human Dimension and Interior Space, these standards are now accessible to all designers of interior environments.

These are probably the most common adult (18-50 yrs.) health disorders besides dental caries, accounting for over 98% of hair loss cases in males and over 70% cases in females. The present volume, the first of three related volumes, is structured in 4 sections: 22 dedicated chapters, ranging from basic science (Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, Embryology), the etiology of adult, childhood & adolescent AGA/FPHL, diagnostic steps and evaluation, to related disorders and comorbidities. For the first time in the scientific literature, all pathogenic contributors of AGA/FPHL, including micro-inflammation, scalp vascularization, biochemical stress, aging, solar radiation, and the sebaceous gland, are examined in comprehensive, dedicated chapters. The effects of every hormone on AGA/FPHL, as well as the psychological impact of the condition, are explored in depth. An extensive chapter on childhood and adolescent AGA/FPHL, a more common than previously thought condition, is another unique feature. Finally, two extremely detailed sections are included on the pathogenic links of AGA/FPHL to life-threatening comorbidities: cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, insulin resistance, and prostatic disorders, with suggested guidelines on how to save lives of balding patients by adopting early screening strategies. In providing a fully updated, thorough guide to this popular topic, this richly illustrated volume (over 200 figures, tables, and algorithms) offers the latest, evidence-based information on every aspect of AGA/FPHL causing hair loss to countless patients. Each subject is addressed according to learning and clinical needs, and the presented information is supported by a wealth of peer-reviewed papers. Every aspect of this condition is considered, including biology, diagnosis, etiology, from drug treatment, the influence of nutrition, lifestyle and food supplements, to related disorders, surgical hair restoration, hair care, and future treatment options. This handbook will be an invaluable conveying best management standards to readers, whether experienced practitioners, clinicians, dermatologists, surgeons or researchers interested in hair restoration.

Book excerpt: Karl Marx's 'The Capital (Vol. 1-3)' is a seminal work that delves into the intricacies of capitalism, exploring the economic relationships between labor, commodities, and capital. Written in a complex yet engaging literary style, Marx's analysis illuminates the exploitation inherent in capitalist systems and offers a critique of the inequalities it perpetuates. The book's historical and social context, published in the mid-19th century, reflects the industrial revolution and the emergence of modern capitalism, making it a key text in the development of Marxist theory. Marx's use of empirical data and theoretical frameworks sets 'The Capital' apart as a foundational text in the realms of political economy and social criticism. As an influential figure in the socialist movement, Marx's insights continue to inform debates on class struggle and economic structures in contemporary society. 'The Capital' is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the roots of capitalist exploitation and the potential for social transformation.
