Book excerpt: Three decades after a murder that shook the city of San Diego to its core, residents and visitors are still reminded of the tragic slaying each time they drive down Interstate 15. Near Mercy Road, where 20 year old San Diego State junior Cara Knott was killed in 1986, hangs a sign that reads "Knott Memorial Bridge." The killing was difficult enough for the community to swallow - a young, beautiful woman, full of potential, never even lives to see her college graduation. But what made the murder even more horrifying was the arrest that soon followed. California Highway Patrol officer Craig Peyer, who had pulled the student over as she'd been driving home, was charged with killing Cara Knott.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Police violence of all types receives much attention from the media, and this is especially true for police homicides that often lead to demonstrations and protests. Police violence is a volatile, recurring social justice issue that often receives media attention, leads to demonstrations or protests and increases the tension between law enforcement agencies and the community they serve. Tom Barker examines police homicide and the different behavior patterns that lead to it, ranging from misadventure to intent. To better understand this complex issue, Barker has created 3 main categories: accidental homicides, justifiable homicides and criminal homicides. Barker includes a variety of cases from accidental deaths involving careless, reckless or negligent law enforcement officers to murders committed by LEOs engaged in organized crime or serial sexual homicides. This book will be of interest to those studying criminology, criminal justice, sociology, political science, etc.

Book excerpt: This book presents a powerful and thorough investigation into police deviance and sexual misconduct in the US. Drawing on news reports, official government press releases and academic research sources, Barker examines a wide array of cases including sexual harassment, sexual abuse, child molestation and police killings, including those of prisoners behind bars. Substantiated with additional cases from the UK, Russia and beyond, analysis is also conducted of the experiences of the victims of those crimes. Aggressors in Blue argues that this misconduct has its roots in the nature of the law enforcement occupation, and outlines the typical conditions which enables police sexual abuse to take place. This is a bold new investigation which speaks to students and academics in criminal justice, criminology and social justice in particular, as well as to scholars, social justice advocates, law enforcement professionals, policy-makers and academics in other related disciplines.

Book excerpt: On June 16, 1944, the State of South Carolina executed 14-year-old George Stinney Jr., found guilty of killing 11-year-old Betty June Binnicker in the Clarendon County town of Alcolu. Betty June Binnicker and her 7-year-old companion, Mary Emma Thames, went missing on March 23, 1944. Searchers discovered their bodies early the next morning. Binnicker's bicycle, and its detached front wheel, had been placed on top of them. Deputies charged George Stinney Jr. with killing both girls. However, for reasons unknown, Stinney was tried only for the murder of Binnicker. 83 days after the deaths, with no appeals, George Stinney Jr. was electrocuted by the State of South Carolina. Rumors about Stinney's innocence or guilt began the day of his arrest. Since the original trial, a fictional book, movie, and several video productions loosely based on the George Stinney Jr. story added to those rumors, and some eventually came to be touted as fact. In December 2014, a judge vacated George Stinney Jr.'s conviction, ruling he did not receive a fair trial in 1944. Although the judge's ruling did not exonerate Stinney, it fed rumors that the girls may have been killed by someone else. This book is an attempt to separate fact from fiction, and an effort to give readers available information pertaining to the case. Guilty or innocent, George Stinney Jr. will forever be the youngest person executed in the United States during the Twentieth Century.

Book excerpt: From the author of No Good Deed comes a true-crime shocker. On June 11, 1988, 27-year-old Janet Moore was stabbed to death in her San Diego apartment. After clues and leads went nowhere, her sad and tragic murder became a cold case. But detectives never gave up on her. Eighteen years later, thousands of miles away, a Daytona Beach police officer stopped Mark Elder for driving with an expired license plate. The officer found and confiscated a partially smoked marijuana cigarette. Aware of a rapist on the loose, the butt was examined for DNA and a match was made to a 2004 rape. Incredibly, the same DNA match turned up in San Diego—Moore’s killer and the serial rapist were the same. Through exclusive interviews with detectives on the case and Elder himself, former police officer and reporter Tom Basinski not only exposes the mind and motives of an elusive killer, but explores the fascinating inner workings of the tireless, brilliant two-decade investigation that finally brought about justice.
