Book excerpt: This dissertation builds on the scholarly critiques of diversity and multiculturalism that emerged in American Studies over the last ten years. Centering demands for ethnic studies at K-12 public schools and a northwest university, it engages organizers' important labors of political critique and activism, considering as well the difficult questions of co-optation and issue capture by the corporate university on behalf of the neoliberal state. At the heart of this project are student activists at a predominantly white university in the Pacific Northwest, and community organizers at various K-12 public school districts in California who subsequently make up the growing grassroots movement Ethnic Studies Now. These activists' labors produce uneven results. While they have been successful in establishing ethnic studies in various educational institutions, that is not always a simple win. In today's multicultural moment, the dissertation argues, institutions lock ethnic studies organizers in a liberal trap of inclusion, eliciting and requiring their work, and co-opting their efforts to transform schools. Investigating through kuwento, which means "talk story" in Filipino, the dissertation explores the ways organizers make meaning out of their work. It also uses ethnography, participant observation, interviews, close readings of curricular materials, and full and careful engagement with secondary scholarship on education and critical ethnic studies to explore the labor elicited by predominantly white educational institutions from students and educators of color to create ethnic studies curriculum--a labor the dissertation names as "racial" to note its racializing effect on its agents and objects. The dissertation observes students who aimed to transform schools, model curriculum writers, and institutions as they all struggle to control the direction and shape of ethnic studies. Despite the state's greater resources, activists find themselves unable to shrink from another classic example of a reform marginalized subjects cannot not want. While institutions are often able to co-opt struggles for racial justice via ethnic studies into window-dressing "diversity," the dissertation concludes, still organizers' efforts are not all in vain, for the affective work of caring for each other produces a radical, unquantifiable excess that cannot be absorbed by any institution.
