Water-skiing, going out on Smith Mountain Lake with her dad and her dog. Anything else ranked a distant second. Until the summer smart, caring, gorgeous Sam Tatum gave her his heart. It had been the most wonderful time of her life, lazy days hanging out at the dock, skinny-dipping at midnight, staring up at the stars from the back of Sam's truck. But lonely and angry, Sam makes a mistake that will change the course of both their lives. Years later, an unexpected diagnosis brings Sam home to his parents' house on Smith Mountain Lake where he believes he can find peace and acceptance. Book Synopsis Dragonfly Summer by : Inglath Cooper

Book excerpt: Just when you think you'll never find the real thing. . . When she realizes she's to blame for her nineteen-year-old daughter's disappearance, Keegan Monroe leaves behind a successful career in L.A. for a quieter life on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. Raised in the foster care system, Keegan had been determined that her children would live a different life. And so, while she fully met their physical needs, the best schools and a luxurious lifestyle, she hadn't been a daily presence in their lives the way she now knows she should have been. She doesn't intend to waste her son's last year of high school in the same way and determines that things will be different between them in spite of his obvious resentment of the move to Virginia. Bowie Dare, an ex-FBI agent turned thriller writer, loves the life he's made for himself and his dog Carson on Smith Mountain Lake. Years of seeing the evil underbelly of society led him to a point where he had to choose a different existence. He'd lost his wife in the process -- she liked the old Bowie -- the one who had been able to compartmentalize the bad stuff he saw and go on with life per normal. When Keegan stops at Bowie's house to ask directions the night she arrives at the lake, they're both at a point of questioning their earlier choices and whether those choices had been worth the price. But in this chance encounter, they begin to realize that the puzzle pieces of life don't always make sense until we're a little further down the road. And you just never know when the real thing might come along. *** ★★★★★ Love everything Inglath writes. Keegan Monroe moves to Smith Mountain Lake Virginia from Hollywood to try to save her son from going down a bad path her daughter took, they haven't heard from her in a year. Bowie Dare left the FBI for the quiet life at the lake where he can write his suspense novels. Keegan and Bowie have a chance meeting when she stops for directions driving into town. Starting over, hope and fate make for a fantastic story. ★★★★★ Butterflies. Another romantic, yet thrilling novel that set my belly into a wave of butterflies and feely goods. The simplistic life has never looked more appealing and I feel blessed to be able to relate with it. Nothing better than a connection between a good book and your reality. ★★★★★ Loved it! I loved this book! Good plot. Loved the quotes in between the short chapters. The type of book you can't put down. Just what I needed for relaxing on a summer afternoon/ evening and sitting outside and reading. Buying another one of many by Inglath Cooper now.

It is a mystery even to those who have crossed and recrossed it by boats along its avenues the lakes; and on foot through its vast and silent recesses....Though the woodman may pass his lifetime in some section of the wilderness, it is still a mystery to him. --Verplanck Colvin, 1879This is a book about what Americans have sensed, felt, and thought about our nation s basic heritage of wilderness, the heritage that makes us unique among modern nations. Book Synopsis Reading the River by : John Hildebrand
Download or read book Reading the River written by John Hildebrand and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “John Hildebrand sets out in a canoe . . . to explore the great riverway of northwestern Canada and Alaska. . . . The geography is closely rendered and the characters especially sharply drawn. The country is filled with mad dropouts at river fish camps, good-hearted girls in the towns, sullen natives in tumbledown villages, cranky old-timers, terrible drunks and worse moralizers who live off the wild landscape and its abundant resources. . . . This is a fine work, and Hildebrand is a fine writer.”—Charles E. Little, Wilderness

Book Synopsis The Committed Reader by : Robert A. Stebbins
Download or read book The Committed Reader written by Robert A. Stebbins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Committed utilitarian reading is either dominantly practical or more or less equally practical and fulfilling. Pleasurable reading is conceptualized as an important kind of casual leisure, experienced primarily as relaxation, active entertainment, and sexual stimulation (racy, pornographic stories). Such reading can also be a launching pad for day-dreams or lively conversation. Self-fulfilling reading is explored in a disquisition on the liberal arts hobbies. This is no place for speed reading, but instead is where we care to pause often to appreciate the artistry of the writing, creativity of the plot, profundity of the message (i.e., the information it contains), and the like. And in fulfilling reading we sometimes want to analyze the material. This book explores three main motives for reading identified as utilitarian, pleasurable, and fulfilling. Its principal object is to deepen our understanding of why some adults (and eager late adolescent readers) go in for "committed reading," or reading that, as we strive to acquire literary knowledge and experience, necessarily consumes considerable time and requires continuous concentration. The conceptual frameworks guiding this endeavor are library and information science and the serious leisure perspective. Through their lenses the author examines the reading of books, magazines, manuals, reports, and other lengthy material as carried out in the three domains of life: work, leisure, and non-work obligation. In brief, committed reading provides its enthusiasts with knowledge and experience, which among other ways, are sought, acquired, interpreted, organized, and sometimes disseminated within the three domains. This book also examines committed reading in daily life, its ease, convenience, affordability, and enduring effects. There follows a portrait of the various reading environments, including music to read by, reading at airports and on airplanes, reading in one's study, in a park, on public transit, in public libraries, and elsewhere. This is part of the reader's social world, which is further comprised of book clubs, bookstores, Amazon.com, censorship, author public readings, and more.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Qualitative Research in American Music Education by : Colleen M. Conway
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Qualitative Research in American Music Education written by Colleen M. Conway and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Qualitative research has become increasingly popular in music education over the last decade, yet there is no source that explains the terms, approaches and issues associated with this approach. In The Oxford Handbook of Qualitative Research in American Music Education, editor Colleen Conway and the contributing music educators provide that clarification, as well as models of qualitative studies within various music education disciplines. The handbook outlines the history of qualitative research in American music education and explores the contemporary use of qualitative approaches in examining issues related to music teaching and learning. It includes 32 chapters that address a range of topics, from ways of approaching qualitative research and ways of collecting and analyzing data, to the various music teaching and learning contexts that have been studied using qualitative approaches. The final section of the book tackles permission to conduct research, teaching qualitative research, publishing qualitative research, and provides direction for the future. An ambitious and much-needed volume, this handbook will stand as a key resource for drawing meaning from the experiences of students and teachers in music classrooms and communities both in America and in other countries.
