Book Synopsis The St. Louis Gambler & the Railroad Man by : Glenn C.
Download or read book The St. Louis Gambler & the Railroad Man written by Glenn C. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-04-18 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William E. Correll (Life Treatment Center) "This book describes the way alcoholics actually think better than anything I have ever read." The world of the good old-timers of the early Alcoholics Anonymous movement comes alive in this book. It tells the interlocking stories of seven people from diverse backgrounds-men, women, black, white, wealthy, poor-who lived and taught the A.A. program with such clarity and spiritual depth, that people came from miles away to sit at their feet and be taught by them. This account was originally written for the local intergroups, to tell how A.A. began during the 1940's and 50's in the cities and towns along the St. Joseph river, as it wound its way through Indiana and Michigan to empty into the Great Lakes. But then all across the country, people struggling with alcoholism and addiction began asking for copies, and psychotherapists and counselors too. It spoke to the heart, they said. It made the twelve step program come alive and showed how it really worked. And above all, they reported, they had found that the words of these men and women were filled with a kind of spiritual wisdom and deep compassion which had the power to heal the soul. So this new edition of The Factory Owner & the Convict has now been prepared, with the last half now printed as a separate volume entitled The St. Louis Gambler & the Railroad Man.

Book excerpt: Welcome to The Warren, where you'll meet Bumper, Roi, Anastasia, Gracie, and a few other rabbits as well. Each rabbit has a story to tell. Bumper loves his owner, the pretty woman with the long hair who calls him Little Bunny One. But when tragedy strikes and Bumper's lovely owner dies of cancer, he has to go live with a new owner, and he's scared. All rabbits are afraid of new things. He soon learns to love his new owner, but tragedy strikes again when his rear teeth start to hurt him and he has to go to the veterinarian. Going to the veterinarian means more new things that scare Bumper. But God means all things for our good, and he has something wonderful planned for Bumper. Roi is the most curious of rabbits, and he likes to solve puzzles. He likes to explore his owner's burrow. More than anything, he wants a girl bunny to be his soul mate. When he meets Anastasia, he knows he's met the one. But Anastasia is a wild rabbit, and she's weary of domesticated rabbits. When Roi does finally burrow his way into her heart, the two share one of the greatest loves ever known. It's heartbreaking then when Anastasia dies unexpectedly. But Gracie, another rabbit, just might be able to give Roi another chance at love. These stories show us that these furry, loveable creatures aren't so unlike us. Find hope and inspiration when you visit The Warren. Fred L. Tate served in the U.S. Navy for twenty-three years and now works in Hollywood as a stand-in for the actor David McCallum on the show NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service. He has owned many rabbits in his lifetime, and each rabbit inspired the stories in The Warren.

Book Synopsis A Bowl for a Coin by : William Wayne Farris
Download or read book A Bowl for a Coin written by William Wayne Farris and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bowl for a Coin is the first book in any language to describe and analyze the history of all Japanese teas from the plant’s introduction to the archipelago around 750 to the present day. To understand the triumph of the tea plant in Japan, William Wayne Farris begins with its cultivation and goes on to describe the myriad ways in which the herb was processed into a palatable beverage, ultimately resulting in the wide variety of teas we enjoy today. Along the way, he traces in fascinating detail the shift in tea’s status from exotic gift item from China, tied to Heian (794–1185) court ritual and medicinal uses, to tax and commodity for exchange in the 1350s, to its complete nativization in Edo (1603–1868) art and literature and its eventual place on the table of every Japanese household. Farris maintains that the increasing sophistication of Japanese agriculture after 1350 is exemplified by tea farming, which became so advanced that Meiji (1868–1912) entrepreneurs were able to export significant amounts of Japanese tea to Euro-American markets. This in turn provided the much-needed foreign capital necessary to help secure Japan a place among the world’s industrialized nations. Tea also had a hand in initiating Japan’s “industrious revolution”: From 1400, tea was being drunk in larger quantities by commoners as well as elites, and the stimulating, habit-forming beverage made it possible for laborers to apply handicraft skills in a meticulous, efficient, and prolonged manner. In addition to aiding in the protoindustrialization of Japan by 1800, tea had by that time become a central commodity in the formation of a burgeoning consumer society. The demand-pull of tea consumption necessitated even greater production into the postwar period—and this despite challenges posed to the industry by consumers’ growing taste for coffee. A Bowl for a Coin makes a convincing case for how tea—an age-old drink that continues to adapt itself to changing tastes in Japan and the world—can serve as a broad lens through which to view the development of Japanese society over many centuries.

Download or read book Topsy-turvy 1585 written by Robin D. Gill and published by Paraverse Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1585, Luis Frois, a 53 year old Jesuit who spent all of his adult life in Japan listed 611(!) ways Europeans and Japanese were contrary (completely opposite) to one another. Robin D. Gill, a 53 year old writer who spent most of his adulthood in Japan, translates these topsy-turvy claims - we sniff the top of our melons to see if they are ripe / they sniff the bottom of theirs (10% of the book), examines their validity (20% of the book), and plays with them (70% of the book). Readers with the intellectual horsepower to enjoy ideas will be grateful for pages discussing things like the significance of black and white clothing or large eyes vs. small ones, while others with a ken to collect quirky facts will be delighted to find, say, that the women in Kyoto were known to urinate standing up, or Japanese horses had their stale gathered by long-handled ladles, etc., and serious students of history and comparative culture will gain a better understanding of the nature of radical difference (exotic, by definition) and its relationship with the farsighted policy of accommodation pioneered by Valignano in the Far East.
