Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral System of Shakespeare: A Popular Illustration of Fiction as the Experimental Side of Philosophy The present work is supplementary to my former book, Sfiakespeare as a Dramatic Artist, originally published (by the Clarendon Press, Oxford) in 188 5, and now (third edition, 1893) in extensive use amongst private readers and in schools and universities. It illustrates an entirely different view point Of literary study. Necessarily, however, two books treating the same author must have some points in common. Where this is the case, I have usually in the present work given the briefest treatment consistent with Clearness, the reader being referred by footnotes to the other book for fuller discussion. In what is intended primarily for the general reader I have wished to exclude technical discussion from the text. Believing, however, that precise analysis Of structure is the best founda tion for the fullest appreciation of literary beauty, I have added an Appendix, which gives formal schemes of plot for each of the Shakespearean plays. By this combination Of general dis cussion in the text with formal analysis in the Appendix I have tried to make what may serve as a text-book Of Shakespeare for students Of literary Clubs or scholastic institutions. Book Synopsis Shakespeare's Portrayal of the Moral Life (Classic Reprint) by : Frank Chapman Sharp
Download or read book Shakespeare's Portrayal of the Moral Life (Classic Reprint) written by Frank Chapman Sharp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Portrayal of the Moral Life Ir conduct be three-fourths of life, or in other words if all deliberate action have a moral bearing, Shakespeare's description of the moral world is but a name for his collected works. Accordingly, since nothing that is broadly human was foreign to his mind, or failed of at least a passing notice at his hands, the title of the following study would seem to be as comprehensive as that of the professorship founded for Professor Teufelsdrockh at the Uni versity of Weiss-nicht-wo. The aim of this under taking, however, is a modest one. Using as our material the concrete facts of life as they appear in the pages of the great dramas, we shall merely attempt to discover what light they throw. Upon a single group of ethical problems. Manifestly such an inquiry may be confined within definite limits. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This work is a re-issue of the book published four years ago under the title The Moral System of Shakespeare. I have reason to believe that that title has been misunderstood, and, in spite of my disclaimer, has created an expectation of systematization in what was really a protest against the over-systematization of others. The Introduction has been entirely re-written, so as to make the argument clearer. Apart from this, there has been no change, except occasional slight alterations of phraseology. Ing a few stones, as specimens of some noble edifice, to which they belonged. Having once more mentioned Johnson, let me warmly commend the perusal of his Preface, which may be pronounced one of the most finished, and most majestic compositions in the literature of English prose, - and which eloquently attests how highly the moral Sage appreciated the moral, as well as the dramatic, merit of this mighty Poet.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Shakespeare written by Derek Traversi and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare: The Last Phase A number of critics have suggested that I have laid too much stress on the symbolic and religious elements ln the final plays at the expense of those of romance and fantasy. The tendency to read explicit statements of Christian belief into Shakespeare seems to me indeed to have been carried considerably too far in certain places. I do not myself believe that much can usefully be said concerning Shakes peare's personal beliefs, and I am certain that none of his plays were written to illustrate religious dogmas or to point preconceived moral judgements; but - I must add - it seems to me no more than natural that a writer of his t1me and place should be aware of Christian tradition as an influence moulding his thought and that he should even seek, in his latest plays, to present in terms of a highly personal reading of that tradition some of his final conclusions about life. For taking the plays seriously, for reading them as something more than poetic fantasies in dramatic form, I offer no apology; their seriousness and originality seem to me to be clearly written on practically every page.
