Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Rifle Shooting: From the American Standpoint It is not without some misgiving that I venture on this, my first attempt to write a book on rifle shooting. Indeed, the idea would probably never have occurred to me had I not been asked by many brother riflemen to put into writing the numerous small matters I have at various times investigated, both for their interest and my own. Undoubtedly, much will be found in these pages that is ancient history to more experienced shooters, but if I have succeeded in making clear the first principles of rifle shooting to the beginner, I shall be well satisfied. Perhaps the experienced rifleman may find a few helpful hints, too, in some of the original devices described, and in. the chapter on "the Rifleman Himself." I have also to acknowledge the generous help received in the way of suggestions from brother riflemen, and from reading various recent English works on the subject of rifle shooting-notably those of Tip-pins and Freemantle. If the reflection of my study of these works shows itself in some of the thoughts expressed in the following pages, I can only say that I am not ashamed to freely acknowledge the source from which a great deal of useful information has been derived. Our English cousins have had at least five years more experience than we in the matter of high power rifles and ammunition, and a study of their methods cannot fail to benefit us. Book excerpt: On the battlefields of the Crimean War, William Howard Russell described the new weapon in the hands of British troops -- the rifle-musket -- as "the Destroying Angel" that swept away their Russian foes. In a response to the popular belief among current historians that the rifle-musket's impact on military history was very limited, Brett Gibbons argues that the rifle-musket was in fact the first modern infantry weapon. Drawing upon a wealth of previously unidentified primary sources, Gibbons examines the rifle-musket and it's role in not just the American Civil War, but also the Crimean War, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and the Italian Wars of Unification. He compellingly demonstrates that the rifle-musket forever changed the way battles are fought, and just as importantly, revolutionized the way soldiers are trained. Gibbons considers a number of historical battles, from well-known actions like the "Thin Red Line" at the Battle of Balaclava to obscure yet ferocious actions during the Indian Rebellion, to illustrate the varying impact of the rifle-musket in both trained and untrained hands. Drawing upon his broad domain knowledge as an expert on 19th century arms and a U.S. Army Ordnance officer, Gibbons compellingly demonstrates that the rifle-musket deserves a better reputation than it currently has from military historians.

This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The .22 Long Rifle caliber is the most popular ammunition and firearm chambering in the world. It's a backyard plinker, small-game hunter, tactical trainer and Olympic medalist. Along with its .17-caliber cousins, the humble .22 LR is undergoing a massive resurgence in the United States, and around the world, especially in places like the United Kingdom and New Zealand, which effectively ban centerfire chamberings. The rimfire rifle, an historic centerpiece of the shooting community, is trending in a big way, and this book brings the topic into current times. Every major gun manufacturer has brought at least one new rimfire rifle to the market in the last two years, and these models are covered in detail. A sampling of topics included in this full-color work: complete coverage of semi-autos and how they work; the magic of bolt-action accuracy; advice on sharpening up shooting accuracy; match shooting and how to succeed; DIY precision gunsmithing; hunting with rimfires; and the future of the rimfire market. And, to guarantee this work provides complete rimfire coverage, the author also goes deep into the capabilities of the "Might Mice," the .17s: 17HM2, 17HMR and 17WSM.
